This is all subjective, so use which one looks good to you, but sometimes when I play games with 3D models on a 2D background, I upscale the polygons for a nice anti-aliased effect, and use a scanline+blurring filter to smooth out the backgrounds and menus. It sounds counterintuitive at first, upscaling and then blurring, but on my monitor it looks pretty good to my eyes.

>>6364778
Yeah, that's an interesting video for people who are unfamiliar with Beetle PSX HW's features. With the new supersampling function, you can render internally at 8X - which gives you nice sharp polygons - and then the output is downsampled back to the PSX's native resolution. This works well with some CRT shaders, because if you render internally at 8x and don't downsample the output, the scanlines will be really thin. I myself don't downsample with FFVII, just 8X internal with a CRT+blurring filter like I posted >>6363173 above.
With PSX HW and RetroArch's shaders, there are so many options to tune your image to whatever you prefer. You can't really go wrong, just play around and set it up however you like, for whatever game you're playing. I use per-game shaders and per-game core options depending on what I'm playing and whether it's a 2D/2D+3D/fully 3D title.
Beetle PSX HW has been by far my favorite core in RetroArch ever since switching over from standalone two years ago. People who shit on RA without trying the new builds, with their improved GUI, neat shaders, and feature rich cores, are retards.

CRT shaders are in 99% of cases total garbage. Always too dark for trying to get CRT done right and too "perfect" and repetitive which isn't good on your eyesight.

There's no way to make FF7 look truly better than how it originally looks. Remako on PC isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea because it does have a few minor details that it cuts out, but it's still closer than most other mods at making things "right" on higher resolutions. Newer models are jackshit. Sure, the originals look like playmobil, but they still look better in scale than most models. This >>6364061 is the problem with most mods: because the backgrounds don't have a coherent scale they look like smaller humanoid figures. It's adding realism where there is none. These models >>6368463 from up close look pretty fucking creepy, specially the Barret model. People are trying to fix something unfixable, but truly the most offensive thing is when they use crappy mods that make the UI look like that generic crap square enix uses for their iPhone ports and those Advent Children portraits. It's absolutely fucking disgusting.

>> No.6369024

>>6368917
remako is dumb because it puts high resolution background under low poly models which is apex stupidity, you are supposed to make them blend togheter not make them stick out like a sore thumb, the only solution is a good CRT, no upscale bullshit, no downsampling and a honest to god dithering, the CRT willd do all the antialiasing you need IF it is good CRT, otherwise it will be shit and that will be that

upressing\swapping\downscaling is just retarded because it will undermine the intended look, the hardware capability and the visual clarity

>you are supposed to make them blend togheter not make them stick out like a sore thumb
They stick way more with a pixellated background, since those are low poly but still high res models. What you're suggesting only works well on PS1 with a real CRT, and you're missing on detail. You can't talk about clarity when what's supposed to be a materia in the distance turns into 2 fucking colored pixels. Oh yeah, look at the clarity here >>6368430 , Jesse is looking so good.

>since those are low poly but still high res models.

who the fuck told you to use high res models again?

If you actually read my post till the end maybe you would have noticed I specifically said the only solution is GOOD CRT, NO UPSCALE (which >>6368430 CLEARLY did then used downsample) and HW DITHERING.

>jesse is looking so good

jessie is in the distance and she is getting blurred by the downsample method, even if she wasn't blurred by it the native low res of playstation would make her look blurry, that's how it was back then, my 32 inch samsung CRT monster couldn't do shit about it even back then, upping that resolution will YES make the models look clear but they will jump out of the backgrounds and hang in a different plane of existence, the same shit remako does, unless you are dumb enough to think square enix had fun drawing high resolution backdrops and then scaling then back to 240i, it was all done with the clear purpose to blend moving characters and backdrops togheter, if you against it you might as well play like >>6364061

>> No.6369085

>>6369070
>who the fuck told you to use high res models again?
The default lego ones are higher res. They are very low poly, because they are the default shit, but they are not pixelated like the backgrounds. I don't know how you're not getting this. It's beside the point, it looks like shit with something like remako, it looks like shit the way it was "originally intended".
