I don't think this will be my next game, but playing Enroth as the orange knight with some house rules may make it more interesting.

As Orange you start with a Knight Castle, and there's a neutral knight town near you.
On one side there's a dead end with a swamp, the purple warlock lives there and has 1 castle and a town he takes early on.

Usually playing Knight you just dispatch the warlock and then move on to the rest of the map.
If you're a bit late doing it you might have a horrible dragon encounter. Either way afterwards you'll probably have a pretty safe game where you eventually get dragons and and and an easy time protecting your borders.

The house rule I was thinking of is that I'm not allowed to attack the Warlock at first.
Maybe I need to kill Blue(the necromancer) first, before that I may not attack the warlock towns, or even enter the swamp.
Possibly doing something similar with the wizard, where I can't attack him until GreenBarb+YellowSorc are gone.
So I don't just win with Titans or Dragons.

Any kind of Necromancer establishment in a fantasy setting is extremely suspect and needs exposition as to why everyone else, provided they have a brain, don't wipe the natural fuckers off the face of the planet before they grow more skellingtons and conquer everything since that's kind of what necromancers do. In Enroth and Antagarich necros basically hide in the shadows and base themselves in more desolate areas, acting generally through subterfuge. But a whole country of undead spider cultists? How do the logistics of that work? What do they grow for crops and what do they trade? Do they just drink green kool-aid all day long? How can you take something as metal and cool as UNDEAD and just get stuck in those horribly uninteresting stories about some cultists sipping on some overgrown spider's tit? Why the fuck did you come up with the concept of the angel of death, Belketh, that taught everyone classic necromancy but then went like no, that's not interesting enough, let's tell a LOVE STORY about some teenage girl that got betrayed by an angel and then became a mary sue leader of local cultists. What the fuck is wrong with you, monsieur Le Breton? At least they did our lad Sandro good justice.

In vanilla homm2 you can't get ghosts and elementals to join you, because they have no cost. Price of Loyalty adds structures for buying them and adds a cost to them, so that means diplomacy and any ghost stack breaks the game.

I think trying so hard to define a setting was the problem in the first place. It only ever serverd to limit, not enrich, what they could put in the game. While it's undeniable that 2 and 3 had a rather defined setting too, those games didn't let themselves be controlled by it to an extent that would prevent them from creative storytelling. Compare it to vanilla Heroes IV which is often regarded as pinnacle of storytelling in Heroes campaigns, it uses its new setting simply as a springboard and doesn't bother to create complex, novel concepts or stick to some kind of strict geography, hell, only two campaigns really have anything to do with the major premise.

>> No.6337126

He wants 2 attacks in a row and make sure he ends with his full stack of avmpires.
In the corner first even if he kills one with less than his full stack, he has more behemoths to leech from, it's trickier with the last 2 since he can run out of hp to leech from.

On this map there's 1 barbarian town, 1 sorc town, 1 warlock town, 2 wizard towns, 2 necromancer towns and like 10 knight towns.

Blue+Yellow+Green+Orange circles show starting locations of the playable knight.
Red circle = start of unplayable necromancer and his castle, Dark red circle = necromancer town.
Purple circle = start of unplayable wizard and his castle, lavendel circle = wizard town.
Brown circle = barbarian town.
Brown squares = other knight towns
white square = dragon city(fight dragons and you can recruit red dragons from this place)

>2 Pink Circles = Sorc town and Warlock town.
These two you can't upgrade to castles, so you can't build structures in these towns, but they both start with level 5 mage guilds.

Red Dragons could be used for Armaggedon squad, also any fast unit(like Champion)+anti-magic shell.
Sadly Gem doesn't have Expert Wisdom.

Started the series with MM6 and need some pointers from knowledgeable people.
Currently have level 10 party (Knight, Paladin, Cleric, Sorcerer), cleared both dungeons at the first map and gypsy islands at Mist. Very slowly going through the dungeons at Castle Ironfist map.
Is it normal that like 80% of all combat is me kiting the opponents with bows? Mage usually crowd controls with Ring of Fire but mana runs out quite fast and red tier monsters in the dungeons outdamage the healing while you are in melee with them (Red bandits are kind of manageable but the red ghosts are rage inducing).
Am I not supposed to go through this quests now and go somewhere else?

Have your paladin focus on body magic only, cleric only needs mind/spirit to 4
If you're fighting ghosts in Ironfist I'm assuming you're in Corlagon's Estate and should probably wait a little bit to do that one. I'm not sure if it's required, but it affects the score a lot so you get higher rating on the same time with a higher difficulty.

When I did Warrior Knight as yellow: >>6338036
it was like a puzzle to solve at the beginning, because Yellow doesn't have a lumber mill.
There's one lumber mill next the purple castle in the swamp, and one lumber mill near reds castle in the swamp, those are the closest sources of lumber. Couldn't get to the purple one in time, but I could send a scout hero up to the red lumber mill and grab 2 clumps of wood.
Yellow starts with a Shipyard, so I only needed 10 wood, which I got. Then 1 sorc out to sea where there's hundreds of wood.

So if you want to play on impossible you may want to study your start a bit and see how you can get essential resources quickly.

>What are you high on (and where can I get some)?
I'll preface by saying that not a single game after 3 released in a finished state and only 5 got somewhere after they let Nival patch it for months and months.
6 is just degenerate. It killed logistics, it has too many sustain abilities, the always online features and reputation do not gel with the gameplay, it's badly balanced (not in terms of faction v faction but just generally in mechanical sense), it's simply completely unfun. I've been trying to find saving graces in VI for a long time and the best I can say for it is that it gave assets to M&MXL which was pretty enjoyable.
4 has good ideas unlike 6 but just like 6 it's unfinished and lacking. AI barely works, spell system is interesting but bloated, hero power curve is bonkers, when you take Terry Ray's novels out of it it's just uninteresting to play. I heard some people enjoy it for PVP, though.
7 is an attempt to do 6 right, and honestly if it wasn't for constrained budget and deadlines they probably could've done it. 4 and 6 look like Heroes but they're not really Heroes, 7 is Heroes, just really, really fucking mediocre. It's bugged, it has bad art design, its skill system is TERRIBLY balanced, but if those things were fixed tomorrow it would've been an enjoyable game. Obviously I wouldn't recommend actually playing it, but I wouldn't recommend 4 or 6 either, and if I had to pick which one was the least shit, I'd say it's 7, even if 7 is still rather shit.

not really, maps can have a difficulty modifier that effects how much score you get even if the map isn't particularly hard. MMX is a good game. I don't know where the meme that it isn't came from. It's far better than it deserves to be considering it's made in Unity out of scrap assets from Heroes VI. Yes, tilebased movement and entirely linear progression aren't very good and the story is mediocre, but the combat is fantastic and power progression feels really nice, it feels far more of a complete product than any of Ubi's Heroes games.

>Is it true that the HoMM3 step forward in all directions compared with the HoMM2
It's a sidestep.
Homm2 is a step forwards to homm1, but homm3 is more like a sidestep that changes fundamentals to the game that happens to appeal to more people.
Late game is more balanced in homm3, creatures on the same tier are closer to eachothers tier level. Phoenixes are better than Arch Devils, but the gap between them isn't like the one between homm2 black dragons and homm2 crusaders.
Homm2s "balance" isn't based on the creature rooster and their individual tiers, but more about the stage in the game and what you can afford. The economy is very different, a fully built Wizard town, can't accumulate enough income on its own to purchase 2 Titans, and each week it gets +3 titans, that's 1/6 creatures the Wizard town has, and Titans are still worth making. In homm3 most capitols can afford the entire weekly creature growth or fall a bit short. in comparison.
As a noob in either game homm3 will be much more forgiving because of this, a noob in homm2 will run out of money and be frustrated because he can't build anything, a noob in homm3 still gets the full army from his faction.

HoMM2 is beautiful, I'm just going to hope you're confusing the graphics with HoMM1 and you're not one of these assholes that thinks the bland ass 3D renders from the early 2000s is inherently superior to detailed, colorful pixel art.

It's hard to dispute HoMM3 has stronger gameplay but I think HoMM2 excels HoMM3 in art, music, and style. HoMM3 isn't bad in any of these areas, but the game isn't particularly memorable for any of them. May Allah forgive me for using this word, but HoMM2 is oozing with soul.

Yeah I just can't imagine a situation in which Knight has the advantage over another faction, people say you're supposed to rush early but your tier one units are nigh useless and of course your higher tier units are generally outclassed if you wait around.
Don't know why you're using the word apologists like that makes it a shit game though, shitty to non-existent balance is just something you have to put up with in retro games.
Tell me guys who have won with Knight on 200%, do you go trying to take towns week 1 or do you try to build pikes/swords and rush on week 2?

>Tell me guys who have won with Knight on 200%, do you go trying to take towns week 1 or do you try to build pikes/swords and rush on week 2?
Depends on the map. Lost Continent I'd take a town week 1, but I'd also do that with Sorc. I'm not sure if you take a town on week 1 on seven lakes, if it's on week 2 it's not with swords+pikes from your main anyway, it's with archers+map creatures. The peasants are terrible but they can do a job in an early fight, like if you take a knight town, your archers shoot town the enemy archers, your peasants kill their approaching pikemen, then your archers kill their peasants.
Knight power changes a lot with a good foundry location.
With a Foundry you have 2 Master Swordsman vs every 1 Roc, or 5 Master Swordsman for every 2 Minotaur Kings.

>> No.6349219

>>6349103
>Yeah I just can't imagine a situation in which Knight has the advantage over another faction
It's a town that relies on finding Archer's Houses and simply amassing a fuckton of T1-T2 units to get a different town and double-build. Building up to Pikes/Swords and even Rangers takes too long because you are blocked for three days thanks to Well/Thieves Guild/Tavern so your best bet is to focus on hiring heroes to frontload your Day 1-2 army. While Peasants suck, 3 heroes + dwelling means you get 150+ of those Day 1, and the AI is gunning for your Archers.
In general, Knight excels on maps where you can reap benefits from multiple Peasant Huts and Archer's Towers and deliver a devastating Day 1 push. 150 Peasants is effectively 150 damage, which nothing else can push in one hit at the time. Later on, Knight is the most effective town to support a double-build strategy simply because everything is dirt cheap yet relatively cost-effective especially if Archer's Houses are on the map.
Barbarian is generally an easier "rushdown" town, though, you can get to Trolls on Day 3 and they're way less reliant on finding external dwellings.

>> No.6349250

>>6349103
>>6349219
Also, for what it's worth, the old Astral Wizard archives held Roland Campaign speedruns and the missions where you had the choice of a faction Knight usually was favored most likely due to guaranteed strong martial hero with Leadership and Ballistics and ranged units. Doing anything fast in HoMM2 (and so aiming for those juicy Black Dragons on your high score... or bragging rights on the 1999 internets) is entirely about exploiting the dwellings on the map anyway for their free units, so the buildup phase is sometimes laying on the wayside.

>> No.6349261

This is good info, it seems I have too much of a HoMM 3 mentality in that I thought getting dwellings was still the most important thing. Guess I have to adjust my mentality and focus on expanding and finding map objects but undoing years of HoMM 3 programming will be tough. And yes it is enemy ranged units that make peasants seem so obnoxiously bad, 1 orc killing 20 peasants with a crossbow shot and such. Thanks for tips.

okay, map concept

Bunch of Knights, but they have something that sets them a part.
Death Knight, basically Corlagon, a Knight with Expert Necromancy.
Unicorn Knight, a couple of sorc towns that can't be upgraded to castles, but come with Fence Meadows, so they have access to Unicorns+Knight units.
Griffin Knight, same concept but with warlock+griffin nests.
Red Dragon Knight, has a dragon city close to his cap.

What else?
Phoenix Knight, Green Dragon Knight, Golem Knight, Mage Knight? I feel like anything beyond that is a stretch.

Maybe something AI only, where it's a Knight vs AI map, or the Knights with their special units are AI only while you fight them as whatever.

More factions in the same vein, golem, phoenix and green dragon knight.

I think an eastern/western sea is better than a northern/southern sea because of how towns must be located for shipyards.

Terrains for the different starting location would probably still be mostly grassland, just using different ones to make them look distinct atm. More forests for unicorn, more mountains for griffins+dragons

If magic is so fucking great, why do you need peasants to farm food, why do you need armies of soldiers with spears and knights on horses, why build castles if there are flying creatures and wizard can teleport into your king's bedroom, implode his ass and teleport back? Where are all those "common" setting without all this shit?

Magic in Might and Magic is seemingly learnable by everyone unless you can wear plate armor, then you immediately lose the ability to learn it

>Where are all those "common" setting without all this shit? because a) it would be boring to just read about mage snapping his fingers and fixing everything (like how Gandalf didn't just call the eagles at the start of the journey) and b) many settings have some sort of anti-magical matter that calls for the existence of soldiers etc. (which is usually tied to the first point anyway)
And honestly, most of the time it makes no sense why dcan't magic be used to grow food, and the only reason is "because we need peasants to have something to do". It's kinda like the Brave New Wold scenario - they didn't need peasants to work much more than two, three hours a day thanks to scientific progress, but they were so unhappy when they had no work to do, that they literally used less machines and stuff to give those people something to do so that they don't get depressed.

There's two ways to do magic - religious, where magic is effectively granted by gods and miracles and requires faith or fealty, and scientific, where magic just exists as another phenomena of the world and then it's basically just part of the science of that world. While never stated, in classic M&M magic is ostensibly the latter, and thus it could be aruged that studying magic in Bracada makes you a scientist, of magic that is. Silver Cities grandfathered that concept in even though magic in Ashan in general is more mystical and faith-based but fuck them. The thing is, if you can command air to let you fly, then yes, you might just fly yourself, or, you can build an airship and make it fly with magic to move more people more efficiently. You can make blasters and power them up with enchantments of fire rather than powder or you can use alchemy to create powder for those who aren't gifted and attuned to arcane just like in real world we have hearing aids for ear-impaired folks.

Shit, I went full autism again.

You will be fine. The only games in the series that could be considered to have a barrier of entry are the first two games, back when the series was a bit more proud of its Wizardry roots.

>> No.6356675

I recently did an SSSC playthrough of MM6, it made the game much easier. Skills and spells are far less gated in MM6 than in 7 and most players will tell you to replace the Archer with almost anything else. Paladin provides a backup healer, but if you build the Cleric right you won't need this because Mind and Spirit magic don't need to exceed the 4 skill points needed for Expert.
In MM7 the choices matter more because 7 introduces the Grandmaster rank which is locked behind quest and class requirements. For example, the Alchemy skill is added which only Druids can GM in order to make Black potions, but Druids can't learn Light or Dark magic.

>>6356667
No, the games are pretty casual as long as you stick to your appropriate zones. Everything is pretty optional although we kept having questions about dying early in super early game MM6 which is why we emphasize going to get bows in the pastebin. You can beat any of the games starting with 3 with about any party, though you have to be creative if you don't use magic.

The bias towards stacked parties are for replays. Once you know where everything is you can shortcut a lot of the early and mid game limits.

I think I finally figured out why some of those new map objects look off.
HAve a look at the lab or whatever that building over the archmages is and compare it to the hill fort. The bricks are far too visible; they should make the seams blend in more. IIRC this is the issue with some of the other new buildings as well.

Many of them are directly based on buildings from Heroes 2 (e.g. the black tower from Warlock town) which is slightly more cartoon-esque than Heroes 3. Hence the stylistic disparity.

I have warmed up on Wasteland terrain though. Desaturating it was a good idea, as well as reusing the trees of Rough. This way it stands out less.

And practically identical facial structure.

Listen, I don't have anything against HotA team using their own likeness for portraits - NWO did it with Sir Mullich and likely with some of the M&M games as well - but based on Frederick's self-congratulatory-sounding bio and the fact he is an actual protagonist of the new campaign, it is more likely than not that this is Docent's self-insert. And self-insert characters tend to not be very well written or compelling.

Its not that different from KKK + one buff caster.
Essentially at some point you need to run trough all the important shops to stockpile Light/Dark scrolls for buffs.

And you still get:
1. All the weapons(dagger is still the best, or Axe past 15-20 )
2. All the elemental spells. Star Burst and Sparks still exist. So do Ring of Fire, Inferno, Fireball, the Bolts, Implosion, BLADES, the earth rock projectile
3. You can still wear all the armor, even if wearing armor is gimping yourself without the mastery level to avoid the recovery penality
4. Beacon and TP

The only downside is that you won't have the insane Mana of SSSC.
Or the insane durability of KKK + buffer

The wording in that bio/post/whatever makes it sound like we are going to play the campaign from his point of view. If Frederick turns out to be a minor (side) character or an antagonist, I'll be sure to come here and apologize for trashing Docent.

Fewer things are resistant to cold, it's cheaper, and you are already going 12 in water, whereas air can stop at 4. It's just for picking off stragglers anyway other than maybe fire elementals in Gharik's Forge.

>> No.6361978

>>6361925
There isn't any point to the Rays. Same with the elemental Arrows.
As for the bolts? The fire one is bad because Fire Ball is better.
Water has to compete with the Acid sidegrade. But Water/Lightning Bolt are both decent since you are going to pump some skill points into those anyhow.
And Implosion/Rock Blast/Blades exists.
This is also the game where Prismatic Light exists as a spell, but its somewhat useless because 25 magic damage is too low to start piercing resistances.

You must not play on higher difficulties, SoD on 200% was far worse than anything the others had.
If you're talking about that map with the 6 factions on 2 opposite continents in RoA, that one was definitely the best and most challenging map in that campaign but I didn't struggle really, invaded with 3 armies and won with the last one.
Secrets Revealed on 200% in SoD had me fighting tooth and nail for 4 months, convinced I had fucked up and couldn't win because I could only field one strong army for so long while trying to take 6 towns, but I got there in the end.
And then I played the hota campaign.
I'm curious if anyone has beaten this scenario on 200% because this is as far as I got, you can see me whining in the comments but I'm not the only one, slavbro on there told me he tried it 20 times and couldn't do it either.

Sparks is awful if you don't put many points into it, but master just takes 4 so Fly isn't a concern. It comes down to what you want for your 2nd elemental caster.
