Look, I respect what the creators INTENDED, I would have LOVED to have seen them make their dream game. When you dig into the behind the scenes stuff there's a lot that could have been amazing. But at the end of the day, when we look at what's actually in the game, it is FUNDAMENTALLY broken and to even call it incomplete is giving it too much generosity.

The biggest issue in PS3 is its shitty magic system. Otherwise, it's not that bad.

I honestly feel sorry for Toyo Ozaki.
The amount of work, love and dedication she put into those characters is insane, there's probably more PS3 content out there than all the other PS games combined.
And in the end...barely anything made it to the full game.

The first three games are very dry when it comes to its characters. It works fine in the first game with its tight team and clear goals. PS2 would be better with more fleshed out characters but it still works with the bleak setting.
They dropped the ball in PS3, given that they throw few lines when someone joins you and at the end of a generation. That's it. When each character had personality and a comprehensive description, none of it appears in the game. Give PS3 world and characters the PS4 treatment and I'm sure you'd have a fan favorite.

Can we get past the "which one is best" thing?
…I say, as I tell OP to git gud and grind for a few hours and then watch as the game becomes a cakewalk afterwards.
2 is grind-heavy for a while at the start, but it's still got this incredible atmosphere of impending doom.
3 had so much promise in terms of behind-the-scenes ideas, but it just feels like it got rushed and there was no time to make it actually memorable. I really, really would like some huge compendium of lore for 3 though, because there's so many promising ideas and concepts - and I love the whole "blade runner" kind of idea (Chobits is one of my favorite manga) so there's that going for it, too.
4's probably the best for character development.
1 has so much heart to it and so many clever ideas. it's amazing and about as fun to play as 4 but for different reasons.

2's US cover art is absolute dog shit, though.

There's nothing like PS1/2 out there on the rpg landscape. They're overworld parts are like Dragon Quest but the dungeons have a heavy focus on navigation and resource management more inspired by Wizardry (even though 2 used a top-down view)

4 has a great story but the gameplay feels more generic by comparison

I heard phantasy star 4 was on par with Squares SNES stuff, but a lot of the lore relies on playing 1 and 2 first. Thing is 1 and 2 are like ultra hard Wizardry style RPGs apparently. Am I going to miss out on enjoying 4 throughly if I don't play the first 2

I played 4 without playing the previous ones and you won't miss out on anything important, it works fine as a standalone game. Just read a plot synopsis of 1 and 2 if you really want to.

>> No.6356971

>>6356934
1 and 2 aren't "ultra hard" or Wizardry style. They both just require some grinding (1 literally right out of the gate) and have a little bit of punishing dungeon design here and there but if you consult a guide once in a while you shouldn't get too discouraged.

>> No.6357030

>>6356971

I seriously started doubting myself when I tried PSI for the first time and got killed as soon as I left the first city, but after that, it's a real cakewalk.

>> No.6357365

>>6356934
1 isn't "ultra hard," although there are a few "Guide Dammit" moments and you may get through faster if you make or use maps. There's also a grind right at the beginning of 1 , but then you shouldn't have to grind any more after that later in the game.
2 is harder than 1 by a fair margin, and more grind-intensive (more accurately, there are more characters and they all join at level 1, so it takes a lot longer to get them levelled up. Also the EXP yields from the early enemies are pitiful.)
Again, though, once you're past the Biosystems lab (2nd or 3rd dungeon) it's significantly easier to just coast past that point. It also has fewer of those "Guide dammit" moments.
I'd say 1 is more fun because of how quirky and different it is, but both are good.
4 blows them out of the water though in terms of overall fit and polish, and you see a lot more of the characters' personalities shining through.
>>6357030
>but after that, it's a real cakewalk.
Exactly; that initial 30 minutes to hour or so is really annoying though.

Only marginally on topic, but I'm thinking of modding my (TMSS) Model 1 Genesis to disable TMSS. The Japanese version of Phantasy Star II is one of the games that Sega didn't correctly program to be allowed to boot on TMSS consoles.

How come there were never traditional PS games on the Saturn or Dreamcast?

PSO is great but imagine if there were a traditional phantasy star game on dreamcast but with the scale of Skies of arcadia. Exploring planets/galaxy like how you would in SoA and in a 3d engine, or the same but on saturn with 32 bit sprites and 3d character battles like SFIII?

>> No.6359681

Phantasy Star 2 is the best of the games.

- you can mix & match your party membership unlike all the other games
- combined with the wide range of equipment this means you have quite a bit of leeway in configuring your party and finding the optimal set-up making it more like a dungeon crawler
- the immense amount of grinding and mazes means plot progression feels like a real achievement, the games story moments feel really earned
- the aesthetic is absolutely perfect, art, music and gameplay in perfect synergy, this is proved by the fact that when Sonic Team produced PSO for the Dreamcast, it's the PS2 aesthetic they went for in 3D

I love PS4 but it's too easy and on-rails for me to love as much as PS2. The story compensates for this, but 2 is still the all time classic

I always loved the setting and ideas behind PS2, actual gameplay is kind of a nightmare and I've barely done shit in it to this day
PS3 somehow looks, plays, and sounds worse than 2. A total downgrade
In PS4 they actually made a real game again. It's clearly the most "casual" of the old PS games, but it's also the only one that's not frustrating to play
I've never really bothered with PS1, but I like the idea of having a cat as a teammate and Alis is hot without dressing like a slut

Recently played through 1's switch port and it was dream to play through, the best way to experience the game (outside of translation and a few errors they didn't fix of course). I'm of the camp that wouldn't mind the games being remade for better or worse but if we never get remakes, including re-remakes for 1 and 2, then I'd be fine with them just making similar ports for the rest of the series. I'll probably move on to replaying PS2 again after I finish my Shining Force play through again.

>tfw she even participated in a fan doujin anthology for the classic ps series
It sucks man, she loves the characters a lot. While unfortunately a lot of what she came up with for the characters isn't "official", I'd agree that we know the most about PSIII's characters compared to any other games cast. PS's staff had a nasty habit in general of discussing important story background for the games and then not including it at all but I feel Ozaki expanded and explained it the best for PS3, though you can argue that's not much a feat since PS3 feels really bare bones.
>>6353341
PS2's text adventures worked fantastically to provide both character and world building to a game already praised for how character driven it was compared to other rpgs, but it definitely would have benefited more if they were able to incorporate that more into the main game. Granted they couldn't add on that much to the game back then but it's a bit ironic for how much people bash the remakes they seem to at least did try to incorporate info from the text adventures into them. But back to PS3, it 's a bit strange how Sega is very hesitant to acknowledge it when a remake would help it out a lot. It already has everything needed to be successful, even including waifus which they could add a relationship system for. Not to mention again that the original artist would be completely down for it too. It's personally my fav despite it's major flaws but I'll always foolishly hope.

I also agree with >>6359917 since there's a good chance they didn't want to add a new game to the series immediately after they effectively concluded the original 4 games. Many fans of the originals are also a bit defensive about a new game in the series too since there's many other cases of great jrpgs from the 80s-90s becoming "soulless" as they were forced to drag on. I personally wouldn't be opposed to a new PS in the same universe as the others but only because the original PS staff both still works at Sega and have said many times in recent years that they would make a new game if Sega let/wanted them to, saying they'd either make a prequel about the great light or even a sequel that would involve dealing with how numans keep populating a lot amusingly enough. Who knows.

As much as fanboys always want for a new game, there's also really something to be said about knowing when to end on a high note. Look at any series that kept running *CoughFF*) and it almost invariably drops in quality but the good installments the good games still endure.

I'm also glad the games did come to a great conclusion and so far has not tarnished that reputation but it's always sad seeing how the PS name is now strictly refers to the PSO era of games (and sometimes PSU) with very little bones thrown towards the original games that started it all. For me that includes them remaking the games or at the very least updating them through a Sega Ages port, but I understand not wanting to beat a dead horse like so many other series from the same era. It just sucks that even those series at least will acknowledge/pay respects to the original games that started the series while Sega's hard press to bring it up most the time it feels, especially when the series PSO and after is a very different vibe compared to the originals though they're still sci-fi jrpgs.

Granted it says partial but it's better than nothing at all. It's has lots of character info and defintely contributed a lot to why I like PSIII as much as I do now. I wish they were able to keep the original JP names in the localization bc things like Laya's daughter being named Laia seems to imply more that the "Laya" name itself might be a title, but that might just be me theorizing too much. It's unofficial in Sega's eyes but its as good as canon to me since it's the character designer. PScave also has translations for some of the comics in it too. And while ironically they never announced a remake for PSIII, there were references made to it in the PSII remake iirc. The most recent acknowledgement of the game was in the Sega Ages port of Columns 2 where you can unlock pic related if that counts, but it's acknowledgements are few and far in between.

That would be a nice remake bonus for sure; it's been years since I first saw pic related but this reminded me of it. It reminds me too of how even though you can't marry at the end of the third generations, the protag all still have 2 girls they could also theoretically marry too in either Laya or Princess/Warrior Kara. Gwen's the odd one out since she takes on Laya's role in her bros route, though there's art of her in a wedding dress too...
>>6361968
Same. While I like all the other protag a lot, Mieu and Wren both best represent the game since they're the only ones who never leave once they join til the end of the game. Mieu's gets more attention since she's the cute android girl but I'm fond of Wren a lot too though I like all the PS androids a lot.
>>6361980
There a lot of potential that PSIII didn't even get to tap an 1/8th into properly in its game and as happy I am to be able to discuss it with people it makes me all the sadder that it can't even get a remake that realizes half of that. I don't think the game not side material really mentioned either if the orakio vs layan conflict softened as the protags ended up marrying layans did it?

I love how it kicks you in the teeth from the get-go with complex mazelike multi-floor dungeons. No holding your hand gently with a linear squiggly line with one optional side path or anything like that, they toss you into the deep end of the pool and if you don't swim too bad. No auto-map either you've got to memorize it or bust out the graph paper, deal with it. I've heard someone say that PS2s first dungeons feel like endgame dungeons in other games and that is so true. It makes me sad thinking about what has become of JRPGs, so linear and easy that gameplay is effectively pointless, if you watch a youtube playthrough you basically get the exact same experience.

I just started PSG1 and, honestly, it isn't as awful as everyone says. Overworld sure looks like something slapped together in RPG Maker and I have no idea why did they make it so that you have talk to each and every NPC several times in a specific order to proceed, but those added dialogue lines aren't half bad and help greatly in fleshing out characters. I especially like that Alisa actually feels like a young girl who was suddenly burdened with the need to regicide and has no idea about the surrounding world and what's going on outside of her city.
Certainly wouldn't recommend it for the first-timers, though.

IDK if I'd call her a feminist, but I do know a woman IRL who grew up playing this game. She said it was one of the only games she played where she saw people like her.
The blogposting kind of feminist is likely too young to remember such games and not interested enough to start digging for old gems. The general public youth today doesn't know Phantasy Star, or might remember Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast/Gamecube, in my experience.

> That's not a complaint though, I much more enjoy speaking to the few fans I can find of it who seriously enjoy the old games as opposed to younger new fans who only care for the "strong female protag" and that's it.
I'm 23 (1996 birth) so maybe I count as a younger fan of the series. I still grew up playing mostly older games though - at the time, they were cheaper than new games/consoles, for one thing, and I've always liked to know how things work and older computers/consoles are easier to figure out. I also had the good fortune to (completely at random) somehow never buy anything other than RPG's when choosing a used game cartridge. Even the harry potter game I got for GBC turned out to be a JRPG-style game when I got home. Pokémon G/S/C developed a love of chiptunes in me, and that pretty much sealed my fate. To date my newest console's a Wii.

I pretty much bought an SMS just for Phantasy Star and Ys, after first playing a bit of PS IV and realizing how awesome it was. I wanted to start at the beginning and then work my way back up to 4 so I could enjoy it more.
I got it (the game) in a trade where I S-Video modded someone's genesis and I got a copy in return.

That's the same artist as the pics I've been posting btw. Demi a cute, too.

As another anon said, no one doubts you/needs proof. You being in the thread happily talking about the old games without focusing on whatever feminist elements it has is proof enough, though learning those scans and covers is pretty cool. My comment towards younger fans was mainly at gen Z kids who seem the most concerned about that to me but you reminded me that I'd also be considered a young fan too at a year older than you, sorry. I grew up with mostly with older games too as you did, but through the various emulator + rom packs my dad had downloaded before we lost internet for many years after. I probably seem more zoom zoom for that even though it was during the early-mid 2000s but it's hard imagining who I'd be now without them since they were a large part of my childhood. I still need to get to owning and playing them on their original consoles though; I keep looking for and buying/collecting things like >>6361773 in the meanwhile.

Please. PSIII designs are already pretty solid and full of cute girls, all it needs at most is some small adjustments to look less FE-like. Personally though I don't mind that they aren't as sci-fi as they could be though since the setting is on a spaceship that forgot it was a spaceship to begin with, much more that they probably have less material to make those things with as time went on. >>6368695
As another anon said, it was explained in the compendium. I currently forget if it was also explained in other sources too but there's definitely info on it that isn't FanFiction. Does anyone know if the remake tried to address that more in game?
>>6368905
Play 4 first I guess since you're just curious about and that is the best out of all of them. If you really enjoy it and want to learn more about the games setting then go back and play the others in order of release but be aware it might feel harder to play. However, if you think you'd be able to stick to playing them all in order alright then I'd suggest that too. All the games can be played just fine without playing the other but they all build upon one another with 4 feeling like a wonderful love letter to the series as it finale.

The best port for 1 is the Sega Ages port on Switch while if you can get your hands on either the Japanese PS collection for saturn or PS2 I think those are the recommended ways to play too since they also have the option to play in English and have additional settings to help smoothen out the gameplay. Otherwise just pick your emulator and play it on your pc.

>What would make it good:
-3D dungeons still in tact with maybe a 3rd person view along with first person
-A little more variety for weapons/armor/healing items
-More lore they couldn't/didn't out in included and expanded on
-More party interactions since everyone mainly only speaks to Alis once and that's it
>what would make it sux
-Alis and crew looking like PSO2 characters, or even it being made with PSO2 assets at all
-adding romance, even if it's subtle flirting
-adding long drawn out cutscenes
-adding new oc characters to the party (some argue that Hapsby would be an acceptable party member if they did though)
-making the dungeons/game play in general more linear
-playing up Alis's role as a strong female protagonist in the worst way to appeal to feminist and the like
-playing up Alis's role as a female protagonist by making her too emotional since she's a girl

There's obviously a LOT of bad they can do and even though the thought of a pretty 3D ps like ff7 remake is tempting, if it's not just an upgraded PSIV or even doesn't take from how octopath traveler kept its 2d art in a 3d world then I think it already would be considered bad by many old fans.

Upgrading the graphics to something you'd expect on the Mega Drive (just using the larger palette for additional depth, not adding details that weren't originally there) would be the only acceptable change for me. Like Mario All-Stars but with even less liberties taken.

Keep expanded story and dialogues from PSG1.
Add more PSIV-like manga-style cutscenes.
Add PSIV-like vehicle combat with vehicle-specific enemies.
Add more interactions with native Motavians and Dezolians.
Maybe add side-quests that party can receive in cities and villages. But only if those quests help expand setting and let you learn more about daily life in Algo, not fetch quests.
Allow players to switch between original FM soundtrack, american SMS soundtrack, PSG1 soundtrack and new soundtrack composed for remake.
Do not bring PSO/PSU/PSO2 aesthetics.
Do not ovrdesign characters, enemies or surroundings.
Totally never allow a person who designed PSG2 characters to touch anything PS-related ever again.

vehicle combat is easily one of the weakest things in the IV for me.
The other things actually sound acceptable; I always want more story. Just wish more games could manage to have both story and gameplay simultaneously.
American SMS soundtrack is also the Japanese MK. III w/o FM module soundtrack, by the way.
>do not bring PSO/PSU aesthetics
Good idea. It could be hard to find someone who will use the original art styles still, though. It's like trying to find people who still draw manga like they did in the 90's/80's.

No, it is not a glitch and resurrecting Nei is a programmed feature, but process to do it is autistic and not worth it in the long run.
a) you must complete PSG1 and start PSG2 using clear PSG1 save;
b) complete PSG2 normally;
c) start new game using clear PSG2 save;
d) you must talk to every NPC in every city before you go to Climatrol to fight Neifirst. Keep in mind that many NPCs change their lines after you progress in story. So after each dungeon, after you get new character in your party, you must visit every town and talk to every NPC all over again. Sometimes several times in a row because they may have a different line the second time you talk to them. Missed one line or haven’t talked to everyone? Well, tough luck, start the game all over again if you want to save Nei.
So, you did all the aforementioned things and saved Nei? Congratulations, she doesn’t have new weapons, doesn’t affect story and the best thing you get from it is satisfaction of having Nei in your party and a picture of her in the ending when everyone is fighting Earthlings.

Not that I know of. PSIV's main cast is supposed to represent each game in the series with Chaz representing 4 (Rune being a Lutz stand in for 1, Rika representing Nei/Numans from PS2, Wren representing 3 by being a similar model as PSIII's Wren) so it wouldn't make sense either for him to be related to her in the end. Like the other anon says, the only thing you really need is the bugfix patch. Other patches tweak various things but nothing anyone would call "essential"... like giving Gryz the ability to wield knives, having certain characters learn different techniques to give them more utility in battle, changing certain names and terms to be more consistent with previous games and/or restoring censored content. Most of those other patches include the same bugfixes so the choice is yours, really.

If it's your first time playing PSIV, just go vanilla or Bugfix patch. On replays, feel free to try other patches if you want to experience the game a little differently. Or don't.

>> No.6388775

>>6387043
Lots of sensible fixes there, but as usual with this sort of patch there are a lot of 'fixes' that are just what some berk prefers with no thought as to the original intent. For instance, it's quite obvious that you are supposed to be able to save on the first screen of the space stations, it's perfectly logical design. Why would you remove that? Or making the first boss immune to status ailments on a whim. Again, it's pretty obviously intentional and sensible design to make the first boss vulnerable to them. Things like this are not 'fixes' and they really ruffle my rappy feathers.

It's surprising how little PSIV's panel cutscene style was used in other games. I've only found it in indie games so far, being Zeboyd Games games (Especially Cosmic Star Heroine which PS was a direct inspiration for), April was a Fool (free visual novel which it works well with), and 2064: Read Only Memories (also directly inspired by but is very much a sjw game). I understand how that it's easier to just animate set 3D models for a scene but I wish more 2D rpgs made use of it, though companies might still think that's too much work to do when they can just animate sprites running around for their cutscenes instead of spending time drawing out many panels for it.
