I don't know, I never liked the art style of most GBA games. I can't put my finger on it. I can say that something about the art style reminds me of shitty mobile games, but I felt this way even before smart phones came out and before I got a dumbphone, so I really don't know what it is about it I hate so much. The color palettes are part of it but that's not the only problem. Even with color correction or photoshopping in a different palette, it still feels off.

>>6349447
This is a good point, I really hated only having one worthwhile attack.

>I don't know, I never liked the art style of most GBA games. I can't put my finger on it.
In the case of Pokemon they're genuinely ugly. I grew up with Sapphire and have a lot of nostalgia for it but there's no denying it, the pokemon games are just ugly and not really a great showcase of the system's capabilities. Here's Magical Vacation, a game that came out in 2001, the release year of the gba and a year before RS. Still, to be fair in the case of RS they were pretty content filled games for the system so it could be argued this could have just been a case of a necessary downgrade but who knows. GBA genuinely has some beautiful games, Pokemon is just not one of them.

The needlessly bright, washed-out colour pallette definitely contributes to my dislike for GBA games, as does the tinny, electronic-sounding sound. For me it's more the sound. Even though headphones, it just sounds like ass.

That's because gamefreak does the bare minimum. Just look at the crap they've been releasing as of late.

>> No.6349659

>>6349651
I wouldn't say the bare minimum, the fourth and fifth generation pokemon games on ds I feel are not only competent looking but have solid content, but in recent years it's obvious they've become lazy. I would say generation 6 and the transition to 3d was when they really got bad. If they really were a small, indie studio like they were when they first started I could understand but as the owner of fucking Pokemon I expect better.

And they made the game even more linear.

Put old dude with map prominently at entrance to town? Nah, have him forcibly give you a tour, then interrupt you a second time as you leave town.

Walk past house without going inside? How about the guy inside stops you and talks to you anyway?

HGSS is the perfect pokemon game as long as you use a romhack for two things; fix the level scaling during single player, and give the player access to every pokemon on a single cart. No more exclusives, no more trade-only evolutions. That's it. Everything else about the game is 10/10. You can argue minor shit like unlocking the original OST from the start, but it doesn't exactly affect the gameplay.

i loved it at the time, but it's just tedious to deal with now. i have two GBAs/DSs and enough pokemon games to be able to do it, but it's not exactly an exciting mechanic. I'd rather just get a romhack that lets me play on a single device.

>>6354701
Level scaling wasn't the best phrase. The levels of wild pokemon rose very slowly throughout the game so you'd finish the 8th badge with level 30 or so pokemon (and run into wild level 15-20 if I remember right). Then you hit kanto and levels are low there too. There are some romhacks that smoothly increase the level of wild encounters so you finish endgame content with appropriately high level battles. In vanilla GSC and HGSS wild encounters are a joke, and you barely gain any experience from them since you'll oneshot them and they're 10 levels under you. It's also an extra step whenever you catch a pokemon you want to use, since it's now massively underleveled.
