Finally tried CRT today and by God ya'll were right, it makes a huge difference.

N64 games especially, Majora's Mask on CRT compared to my monitor off Dolphin is just night and day, the lighting is far superior on CRT. Any other games that CRT just does notably better?

I always liked original punchout on a CRT.

the bright blue or the green boxing ring creates a glowy sectioned off area on screen that really pops.

also DEFINITELY try out super metroid. the sharper your crt the better the better (like a trinitron) but that game looks like fine art on a CRT

>> No.6342867

Basically all games that were designed for 480p or lower look better on CRTs. I find 3D games especially have such better illusion of depth on a CRT vs. a flat screen. It really feels 3D instead of looking at a 3D image on a 2D screen.

>> No.6342875

Good modern monitors like low latency oleds or ones with strobing backlights can give you as good an experience as a CRT when properly configured but it's important to have seen the games played on CRT with your own eyes to have a standard to go by.

As for your question, check out Silent Hill. Dem blacks.

If you're using any input other than RGB or Component, check out some Genesis / Saturn games that use software transparencies like the waterfalls in Sonic, or games that use heavy dithering like Silent Hill on the PSX.

Hell, play Sonic Mania on it if you have the hardware to plug your PC into the CRT. There's a mod you can download that forces the game to run at a 4:3 aspect ratio. Playing it on a CRT with a Saturn controller is like entering an alternate timeline where the Saturn was a viable console.

I bought this around five years ago off eBay. It's a very basic VGA > YPbPr transcriber (ignore the colours, I didn't have any red, blue, or green RCA cables when I bought it).

The way it works is that in my PC, I have an R9 270x plugged into my secondary GPU slot, and a DVI > VGA adapter plugged into that to get it to the transcriber, and then to the TV. I also have to use third party drivers, crt_emudriver, to be able to set 240p resolutions. On Windows 7, I could set it to whatever I wanted like 320x240 or 256x224, but you can only set super resolutions (2560x240) on Windows 10 which limits what emulators you can use.

Obvious false flag troll is obvious. No LCDfag would ever risk destroying their delusion by actually tasting the grapes to see if they're actually sour, let alone admit it if they did.
On the off chance this isn't a troll, every single N64 game will look miles better due to they way it fucks with the output specifically to help it look better on CRTs. Other than that most things will just look "different". Of course you can also now experience the wonder of real light guns. The difference between those and wagglecope is night and day. Also, you'll have to get used to not having all that lag. It will take some time to adjust, especially with shit that has timing critical moves like fightan games.

Im not a troll, this is a picture of my home setup, not some shit I found online.

I used to play Melee/Project M competitively so i already owned a CRT, i just never bothered setting up anything to play games on it since emulating it and running it on my monitor is just easier.

Right now I'm using a homebrewed Wii and just USBloading games off it. I dont think theres any difference in input lag compared to my monitor but it does look a lot better. From my smash experience Ive seen monitors have equal input lag to CRTs even off AV-HDMI inputs but you have to know what youre looking for and the right converters.

Is fun to act superior using something you pulled out of your neighbor's trash and everything. I have lots of CRTs myself but the truth is that finally flat panel technology is getting on par with what CRTs were doing thirty years ago and in some limited ways on some displays, exceeding it. It's still important to have CRT to use as reference though and in many applications it's still more logical to use CRT - but we're beginning to see clear indications that eventually technology will progress beyond them and they'll really only be good for novelty or period authenticity.

No matter what you think CRTs will always be the best way to play retro games. You can call it what you want - novelty, authenticity, nostalgia, but you know it's the truth. Modern flat panels can have excellent colors, contrast, black levels etc. but they will never be a curved cathode ray tube and they will never have scanlines. So suck it!!

You can pontificate about what technology will eventually be all you want but the cold hard fact is that there's a lot of stuff that newer display technology can't do and probably never will do. In fact, the trend is away from working will with old stuff. How many times have you heard someone here complain that their cheap shit TV doesn't have composite? Usually it does and they're just too stupid to find it but eventually that will be the norm. Heard to same about analog tuners. CRT fag here. Protip: a 4k oled with high quality shaders is just as good, if not better thanks to the lack of inescapable geometry issues. Probably nobody irl is going to really care to use it with you so go for a 13-14" one to start with and just set it on your desk. Smaller ones are a bit harder to find with either S-Video (Y/c) or Component (Y/Pb/Pr) and almost impossible to find with both so you may be making a long term decision about if you want to "settle" for very good and much simpler S-Video or if you want to chase that RGB rainbow. Another thing to keep in mind is that Sony Trinitrons (and other manufacturers *-trons) have squarer physical pixels than other consumer CRTs if that's something you feel like you would care about.

Don't do this unless you absolutely don't have the space for something bigger. Video games are more immersive on bigger screens especially 3D games, which are a pain to play on a 13 inch display, trust me. Get as big as a CRT as you can find and transport. Also CRTs are more headache inducing that modern displays so you really don't want to have to sit super close to a small one to see anything.

Many four player arcade cabinets had 21 inch or smaller CRTs in them. There's pretty much no point in 30+ inch CRTs. Who are you going to impress with a 300 pound monstrosity that still has a smaller viewing area than a medium sized HDTV? The experience is the same. If you get headaches from a CRT, especially a consumer CRT displaying 240p you probably shouldn't be using them. I don't know what you think sitting farther away from a larger screen is doing for you.

>> No.6346253

>Many four player arcade cabinets had 21 inch or smaller CRTs in them
Yeah, and you're standing up with barely a foot between your eyes and the screen. Why are you using this as a justification for recommending 13' CRTs for home use? Also not everything people do is to "impress" others, but I know that's hard for you to grasp. It's impressive how consistently bad the advice you give on here is.

>> No.6346296

I think that a person considering picking up their first CRT for the experience will have a much easier time pulling the trigger on something that they can pick up with one hand, bring home on the passenger seat of their car, sit right next to their computer or on an end table and move around to find a comfortable arrangement and know that they can just as easily pick up and take to Goodwill or the curb if they find it not to be something they're interested in. If Anon enjoys the CRT experience he can always pick up a bigger one but if he starts with a giant one and doesn't use it enough to justify having it he's got a while pain in the ass over again to get rid of it.

What you're suggesting is the equivalent of going on /ck/ and telling someone who's considering getting into baking that they should start by buying a stand mixer or saying the first step to /diy/ is buying a radial arm saw.

Thanks, anon. Is this where you got your shaders? https://forums.libretro.com/t/analog-shader-pack-version-3-is-here/5493

Royale, Royale Kurozumi, and Royale XM29 are all packed in Retroarch. You will find Royale in /crt and the last 2 in /presets

I like the XM29 preset for some content, especially mixed 3D/2D PSX stuff and some games with digitized sprites. While I understand it's trying to replicate an NEC XM29 monitor and its color profile, my only gripe is that it's a bit too warm for my taste. I recall thinking "well I'll just change some parameters" seeing about 30 different options, and just rolling with the defaults. Still, lots of tweaking possibilities for people who like to dig in to that stuff.

Yeah, look where that other anon said, but remember that there are two /presets directories - one for your created presets and the other for dev created ones. And also ensure you're loading .slang shaders and not the older, deprecated ones. Slang shaders are more or less universal and work with OGL, Vulkan, and D3D11 backends.

I prefer the 320px crt royale svideo for 32bit gen consoles and the 256px composite for all older consoles, but then I really like the flicker it creates

Yeah I didn't think to look in the presets folder until I searched for "xm29" in Windows. Cheers

320px is supposed to be used on consoles that output 320 pixels horizontally (Sega Genesis, PSX, N64) and 256px is supposed to be used on consoles that output 256 pixels horizontally (NES, SNES)

I know, but weirdly some look better with the 256px even if it’s not made for them, maybe it’s because my monitors resolution isn’t high enough
