>Dreamcast was 15 years old when it became allowed for discussion on /vr/.
>PSP and Xbox 360 are both turning 15 this year.
>6th gen is STILL not allowed.

Even if you try to start a thread about the Wonderswan Color, /vr/ still throws a shitfit.

The problem is that the board is unwilling to accept younger generations into a board once exclusive to older folks. It's unprecedented, but the best way forward would be to allow the zoomers in to talk about the XB360 and such. It is retro in the sense that we've had 2 gens since the 360

This is the problem. Older gamers still want their exclusive retro club, and it's not sustainable.

When will these consoles be considered retro? In 10 years. making it 25 years old? In 2-3 console generations?

>> No.6343904

>>6343896
The problem is too many games. A lot of vr don't get talked about a lot as it is. If we allowed ps2,gc,xbox the older games that are already on the back burner would be nearly impossible to discuss, leading alone the ps3/360. At that point, there's not much of a difference from /v/. Even then, there would have to be PC games from 2000 to ?. It's too much, /v2k/ is and always will be the answer.

>When will these consoles be considered retro?
Never. Just like how comic books from the 70's will never be considered from the Golden Age, and comics from the 90's will never be considered from the Silver Age. I don't know why this is a hard concept to grasp.

Nah. 2000-2004 games have a lot more in common with 90s games than they do with late 2000s/early 2010s games. Don't even pretend Majora's Mask is from the same era as Skyrim.

>> No.6343916

>>6343906
It's just easier that way because the consoles released after 2000 really don't mesh well at all with the consoles from before. By keeping Retro everything before the year 2000, we go from the start of video gaming to the era of very early 3D + the Dreamcast which is not a powerhouse at all and is more in line with the N64 than the GameCube. This keeps Retro synonymous with early on every aspect. During the PS2/GameCube/Xbox generation, the landscape of gaming changed entirely and drastically enough to the point where that should mark the beginning of a new era.

Retro shouldn't be expanded to let newer consoles in, a new era should be made instead.

You're missing the point. What I'm saying is that a millennium is such a broad unit of time that it's completely meaningless. Aside from video games not having existed for most of the last millennium anyway, as you so helpfully pointed out, so much changed in those 1000 years that it's not even comparable. The 90s absolutely has more in common with the 2000s than it does the 1930s, let alone the fucking 1000s.

No it isn't. N64 ports on Dreamcast run at triple the framerate at double the resolution.

See, I disagree with that. I think the GameCube and PS2 had more in common with the Nintendo 64 and PS1 than they did the Wii and PS3. The GameCube and PS2 could have come out in the late 90s and they'd fit right in.

You're delusional if you think the GameCube is closer to the N64 than it is to the Wii when you remember that the Wii is just slightly clocked higher GameCube hardware, and compare Super Smash Bros. 64 to Melee to Brawl, or OoT to Twilight Princess to Skyward Sword.

Melee has more in common with 64 than it does Brawl, and Twilight Princess is basically a Wii game that happened to be compatible with the GameCube.
Wind Waker certainly has more in common with OoT and MM than it does TP or SS.
