Sega CD version is essentially the only option, the MSX2 and PC-8801 versions were incomplete/missing Act 3, the PC Engine CD version translation is incomplete/unfinished afaik (Which is extra-stupid when 75-80% of the text could just be brought over from the Sega CD version), and the Saturn and Playstation remakes removed the aesthetic pixel art with horrific early-gen CG and overly blended artwork. Half of the appeal of the game is the gorgeous and soulful pixel art and animation.

Probably cancelled, they tried to get Konami's blessing and have said nothing since.
Play the SEGA CD ver, I think the pixel art in it holds up better than the PSX/Saturn versions "improvements."
