Alright! I'm not done yet, (I died at room 4, as you'll see later.)
So far, I'm really liking things. Other than the doors needing better textures, overall, I'd place it at an 8.5/10. Maybe even a 9/10. Let's get started, shall we?

1. The Chaingun Ammunition Room.
The first three rooms give you a good idea of how things will be going. You get a shotgun at the start, and a chainsaw secret back at the starting door. WHY THE FUCK DO YOU DO THIS? It's common as hell, and literally everybody, their grandmother, and their pet pinkie demon puts the secret there, and it makes things a bit too easy.

After mowing down a few zombiemen and shotgunners, which I think might be a little easy when you have a shotgun (maybe skip giving them the shotgun and force them to earn it during this fight? The pistol needs to have some time, after all) you're in a room with three windows while imps outside throw fireballs at you. I tried fighting them here, but it was almost impossible because the window texture was so weird. I do really like this area, especially later when you're outside- it makes things seem more connected than just a bunch of completely seperate rooms. (2)

The third room has two chaingunners and a hellknight, which is always good, but the room's saving grace are those pillars. It makes things a bit difficult to get without taking damage, but all in all, I like it. The chaingunners never tend to hit the hellknight, so getting them to infight is impossible.

The trap, however... I love that trap. I love the idea of a 'marked' trap, that you think it might be a secret, or something else makes it significant, but it turns out, AGITATED SKELETONS AND FAT DEMONS. It's awesome, and I like it. I had to jump down the river to the side and get the rocketlauncher (Going to 2 again) first to kill them, but it was still surprising, possible to defeat, and fun.

Speaking of the little green river, you should probably do something about the left side pit that you can't get past. Add a one-way cliff, or something so that nobody wastes all their health going in there to be forced not to get out.

2. The Big Outdoors Room
It was fun. With the chaingun and pre-killing the imps it was a bit too easy, but the graphics and design is incredibly fun. The secret is too blaringly obvious, and the windows to inside are the worst texture for a window ever, but other than that, I have little to say about here, and I said most of it back in (1).

3. This room. Ooooh, this room.
This room is probably my favorite room of the map. The double barrel just plain sitting there, 'marked' with dead monsters so you know something will go wrong, the surprises that come by to say hi... and the tiers! The tiers and tunnels and ramps going around and interweaving really gives you a feel about the room, like you're wandering blindly. And the key DOESN'T have a trap! Which is awesome! Too many people throw keys with traps in their maps.

4. Fucking Indiana-Jones-Warehouse Shit Room
This is where I died. It really feels chaotic and fun. After getting the blue key, you slam down a handful of demons and hell baron, and move on to this shithole full of berries, imps, and spectres. The spectres are the best part, since they're impossible to see, still a challenge with the chainsaw, and the light amplification goggles are a real goodie for this area. After killing them all and moving on, I got shit on by a chaingunner while I was trying to berserk him in the face, with the pack found in (3), , and died.

How do I add textures to PWADS? I go in to SLADE, go to texture editor, create all the TEXTURE1 and PNAMES bullshit, and then add a texture. It is is noth the TEXTURE1 lump and PNAMES, and it is between the P_START and P_END. It has been converted to the doom graphic format.

Yet it does not show up in Doom Builder. All that shows up is the Slade Dummy texture.

And on top of that, how do I make a sky texture? Like make it wrap around the sky, so it doesn't just look like a sky texture pasted on the ceiling?

Yeah a lot of the stuff you mentioned as (kinda) negative points are stuff I wondered about but at the same time, I felt the player should be allowed to make mistakes, but some of them are just kinda left in because I was basically cramming everything into one map really.

Hypothetically if I get good feedback I'm going to do a few more levels and make it into an episode kinda thing, so a lot of the difficulty spikes and stuff of this particular map would be changed and smoothed out.

For guns and monsters, assuming you're using Zdoom, just look on the Zdoom wiki for articles about decorate. The best way to learn it is to just dive in - grab some weapon/monster wads, look around in the decorate file to see what's what, use the Zdoom wiki as a reference, and you should be able to figure out how to get your own machinations working in no time.

Really, if you want to get into authoring your own content, you've got to at least have the ability to dive into the unknown and start figuring things out on your own. There wont be a hand-out tutorial for every little thing you want to do, and compared to modern game engines, Doom is comparatively easy to get in to.

For textures, you'll probably want to look into PNAMES and TEXTURES/TEXTURE1 lumps (lumps basically just being data entries within a wad), and make sure you're putting the graphics between the correct markers (PP_START/PP_END, FF_START/FF_END, etc). Easiest way to add textures is to just yank them out of a resource wad like cc4-tex.

Both shots land where your crosshair is when each individual shot goes off, so it helps for people to realize you want to keep mouse movement on the enemy or lag the pull till the second shot fires. Chainguns are pretty good for stunlocking things that tend to flinch when hit like Cacos, Pain Elementals, and Revenants; they are also useful for nailing flying enemies hovering over pits or lava pools, and are also great for clearing out masses of former humans of all types. The weapon can snipe pretty well, so it's a decent pick if you're trying to nail a chaingunner that's on a raised floor across a chasm that you can't close in on.

If you're playing cooperative, chainguns can also be useful for providing backup fire from behind someone on point, as using more powerful weapons tend to wind up with you blasting them into a baron's face or into a cyberdemon's rocket.

Overall though, chainguns are best used on fliers or for smaller, weaker enemies; I wouldn't try taking on a mancubus or Hellknight with one if I could help it, and anything tougher than those are poor targets for the weapon.

Finally have the sprites done for this thing (currently christened "Paladin"), and managed to get it working in-game to boot. Works like a charm, though I haven't gotten the more advanced functions in yet (where they'll block their own grenades; currently they just don't take damage from them), and I still need to do some misc stuff like brightmaps and the gldefs. Still, feels good to finally see him moving around and killing shit.

Fun fact for the decorate savvy: Contrary to its name, ProjectileKickBack can actually be set on a monster, which will give the same effect to its melee attack. So the Paladin hilariously launches enemies (i.e. you) away if you get within punching range. Fun to watch him infight and send some melee enemy packing.

As promised:

Once upon a time (Summer of 2007): some guy realized there was a lack of dm packs added recently (which is true, 2007 was more of a single player year) So he wrangled up a posse to make a 32 map DM wad in 24 hours. (Note: the term megawad generally means a wad that contains at least a whole episode worths of original map content...so anything with over 11 maps is generally considered a megawad...though some argue it needs to be a full 32 maps. In either case, 32in24 fits the bill. Said posse did just that and the community wanted in.

So for the next couple of months, there was a new theme every couple weeks where maps would be submitted to a theme in a 24 hour period, the best 32 of which made it into the pack.

After blowing their figurative creative load in volume 5, this team (now known as YEDS) took some time off and made a few more wads in 2008, with far more focus being on quality over quantity of wads. As such, after 2008, 32in24 kind of became a once a year thing. Due to the scarcity, they now moved past a map being done in 24 hours and there being 32 maps, so the project is really in name only, but it draws in a lot of big names (Mechadon, Kassman, and TGH! are 32in24 regulars who dont usually do multiplayer).

Actual quality control also ensues as of volumes 11 and 12. (BTW: there are 12 numbered entries in the 32in24 series, but the lesser known diet32in24, which isnt DM or a 32 map pack, also exists, so 13 or 12.5 also are acceptable)

Either way I was considering adding a BFG instead of that RL, although to temper the easymode I was going to put in a few more enemies too.

I'm used to designing multiplayer maps, where placement of items is easy. For singleplayer you have a lot more to consider, as well as taking into account how many players won't look for anything that isn't right infront of them and just thing "FUCK THIS IT'S BULLSHIT"

Either way I think that maps pretty much done, just going to add a few tweaks and move on to the rest. Also I'll take out the chainsaw because when played in sequence, that won't be necessary.

I've finished the brightmaps and gldefs stuff for the Paladin. All that's left now is a bit of sound work (debating between using the Terminator's sounds or doing some tweaks on some sound effects someone posted on the forums, mainly just shorten them & add an explosion sound to the death sequence), and then later on add a normal death sequence (Currently just explodes like the Cybruiser; I'd like to make one based on the Hell Warriors', but it's proving to be really difficult) and maybe some other stuff.

Someone asked me previously if I'd provide a file to swap Hell Knights/Barons with the Paladin, and I was wondering, would there be any interest in a file that randomly swaps in a bunch of different monsters? Like a sort of mash-up of "new" monsters that sometimes spawn in over the standard ones. I've got a bunch done for a map I'm working on, figured I could toss 'em into this for some extra fun. Though if folks would rather just have a test file for the Paladin, that's fine too.

It's a pretty cool novelty, but don't you think it's a bit underpowered? I mean it does a good job of killing me when I accidentally walk near lightning or fireballs, but enemies seem all but unaffected. Killing just the imps and zombiemen in Entryway of Doom 2 is taking forever. Also, I think the dice are too slow to recharge, you can only roll them so quickly, and that rate is too slow to me. Perhaps allow multiple dice to be 'charged' and thrown at once, ie. like Mega Man's charge shot, but with increasing the dice count. Or make the rate of rolling faster.
