So I think we can all agree that Breath of Fire II is the peak of the franchise.
How would you personally rate the series?

IV was a great game but I never liked that "korean...?" like style for towns and enemies. It might be "original" but it just didn't click with me. The transformation system was ass compared to III, it's like going back to I's system.

III was very good, nice cast, excellent visuals (IV felt very desaturated, like some modern indie games, III had a lot more color), it has some really good mechanics and the best dragon system in the series, but it feels long as shit in some parts.

II was my first RPG and I look back at it fondly, it's pretty good for the time, but it sure has a bunch of flaws, like one of the most ridiculous encounter rates (two words: Witch Tower) for enemies that are relatively sturdy. It has the worst dragon system in the series IMO (elements don't even matter wtf) and it demanded ridiculous amounts of WiseBL to function.

I felt the most basic and cliché of the bunch but it still had a certain freshness to it, specially at the time (played it a bit after II came out and was generally pleased, but it's like more "standard RPG" than the rest). although the dragon system was better than in 2, some story moments are pretty neat, and I always loved the detail that when using the song on Zog, Ryu also got his dragon ass all fucked up. Oh yeah and that fucking Gremlin's second wind. The second wind system was very interesting but it was a pain in the ass at times, lol.

Then there's Dragon Quarter that isn't retro. It's a fairly good game and the D-Counter is both annoying and rad, but it sure is weird as fuck. Sadly it has my least favorite designs in the series for pretty much everyone involved (protags, villains and dragons) and while the world is perfectly portrayed as the mess it is, it's way too bleak and it fills me with apathy.

I heard there's a 6 for mobile but I never heard anyone talk about it. Don't think I even seen screenshots or character designs, I assume it's pretty bad until proven wrong.

If you read further and see the post about that scene you can see the scene was actually mistranslated. In the original scene Nina tells Ryu she USED TO have a crush on Cray while he was dating Elena since he just seemed so nice but that she knew he and Elena loved each other so she would never act on her feelings.

Technically the translators understood what she was saying, they just misunderstood the past tense aspect of her line and made it seem like she still had a crush on him, which is false.

The vast majority of the fusions are only available at the very end of the game.
If your HP go bellow 25% the fusion will wear off, and you need to leave the dungeon and return to your town to equip it back.

It's not, I actually feel the exact opposite.

I genuinely feel it's absolutely brilliant, one of the few times I feel a jrpg has had an actually compelling plot point. Fou-Lu, as the antagonist, argued that mortal's sins are too great and that allowing the cycle to continue as it is will only induce more widespread suffering. he believed that the suffering of millions at the hands of the few is worth exterminating. What separates him from so many other jrpg antagonists or villains is that he has genuine ground to stand on. If Yuna had died and got what he deserved Fou-Lu's argument would hold no weight since, like any old jrpg, the villain got what they deseved.

In real life the villain doesn't always get what he deserved. Some of the worst humans to ever live went on to die without enduring even a fraction of the suffering they caused others. Fou-Lu's rage against society feels so much more genuine since you, the player, also are angry at Yuna just as Fou-Lu is. You've experienced first hand just how Yuna made Fou-Lu suffer from the start to the end of the game.

It's a genuinely great ending that shows we can't save and fix everyone and everything, some times the system can't be fixed and things aren't so black and white. Even though Fou-Lu is wrong in his aim he feels far more genuine then most jrpg antagonists.

>Put one optional Super-Boss that would require good levels and equips and strategy to beat. Put him in the end of a secret super hard dungeon.

>Make status attacks actualy worth using (def down, hush, idle, etc)
>Make Fishing and Hunting worthile the whole game. they are only usefull in the begining of the game and to fish treasure chests later on
>Balance the players. Make Spar have a lot more AP and more usefull spells. Make Jean not suck like ass. Bleu can still be awesome, but make it harder to get her (like, you should fight her guardians first)
>Tiga can beaten. This would be relevant to the following system.
>Create a system of relationship, with 04 possible options: nina, katt, spar and bleu.
>HOMETOWN: Make it possible to evict a tenant at anytime, for a heavy fee; most tenants are able to occupy any of the houses; no tenant can be skipped forever; make Ryu have his own home, that he could share with love interest; the other architects in Capitan can be hired as tenants, so that they own services can still be acessed by the players;
>create a zone that can only be acessed by flying township
>INCREASE TOWNSHIP'S MOVEMENT, for the love of fucking jesus
>make spells hit harder; make them cost more AP; make AP to be recovered automatically a little bit after every turn
>W.Fruit does not take off HP and is sold on stores.
>Smoke reduces encounter much more effectively
>Create an item, later on, that can automtically set the rate of encounters (none, low, normal, alot)
>Create a system that allows to change colors of the characters - every hue should be found for every player.

>Symbolism time!
>That ring of green trigrams is a Primordial/Earlier Heaven bagua. "The fuck is that?", the average goon says. Bagua means Eight Symbols in Chinese, and is an important diagram in Taoist philosophy. It represents the flow and structure of reality, with the trigrams representing parts of reality along with elements of yin and yang. Going clockwise from the trigram at Fou-Lu's feet, they are Heaven, Wind, Water, Mountain, Earth, Thunder, Fire, and Lake. They are also associated with seasons, cardinal directions (with Heaven as north, just like the compass says), emotions, concepts, families, and a whole bunch of other stuff. They're also an element in feng shui, used to map out the house to be in balance with creation and affect the owner's life. There's probably a metric shitload more symbolism here than I'm aware of (especially with the western symbol looking a lot like that Bangla script Om discussed in the previous symbolism update), but the fact that Fou-Lu's standing on Heaven while you approach him from Earth isn't exactly subtle.

BoFIV draws from many Asian mythologies and beliefs.

It was the first game I played in the series, so there's a bit of nostalgia, but I really like how the cast is diverse and colorful compared to most games in the genre, and despite being the first, they nailed it. Might not have the drama and elaborate designs like II, but it has somtehing unique going for it IMHO.

You only learn Warp with Jean after he's lv 14, or something like that (which is laughable, since you never really have to use that piece of shit), with spar (like, halfway the game) or bleu - only after you get the whale.

The warp NPC also would work if you just dont wanna use Spar, Jean or Bleu in your party, which I usually do (Katt, Rand and Nina, for me).

>create a compeling character that could be called a basic ass villain - Fou Lou - but the game allows him to be developed into something layered - the villager girl death
>create an arch that put such 'villain' in the path of the quitenssenstial and boring Mary Sue hero - Ryu.
>But, again, create, through dialogue and word bulding, compeling reasons to cheer for the Mary Sue hero and his friends too- Nina's sister quest, Ryu hate for innocents being killed, etc.
>Do a great job introducing a very human vilain - just some guy, with no powers, who's devoid of empathy, the worst sin a human can have.

Making him die would be fine, but that's it, just fine. If Yuna died like "intended" BoFIV's ending would end like any other jrpg. IV's ending did something different, and in this case I feel special. I feel that, even if it was unintended, Yuna surviving gave us the much better narrative.

That's because Ryu2 has excellent taste (pic related).

But really now, here's something interesting I read in the wiki.
>It is unclear as to what happens to Nina after the defeat of Death Evans. A part of the ending shows that her father does seem to recover from his illness after Death Evans falls. Some fans assumed that the Princess returned to Wyndia. Because of the fear behind the color of her wings, other fans argued against this. These fans argued that if Nina were to return to her parents, political turmoil and chaos would erupt in the kingdom. Nina was also never shown to return to Wyndia after the story closed. If she was in the party selected to fight Death Evans, Nina was last seen returning to Township. If she stayed behind, Nina may be one of the party members greeting Ryu as he returned home. Because of this, it was also believed that she stayed with Ryu in Township. Supporters of this believed that Nina would live the rest of her life with Ryu.

Not him, but at least in the GBA version, Ryu gets a particular shout-out assuming we're both thinking of the same scene. Also she tears his head off when he admits he's considering taking his mother's place guarding Infinity.

I've only played the first three games and I enjoyed 1 when I was younger. Had so much fun I was happy to play 2 when I was a teenager. Fucking hated it. Trash game. You're telling me I need to swap who is the front character so that I can talk to certain people and advance the story? Well I guess it's not that big of deal except I need to find a save point where I can swap the characters, it can't be done on the fly or even at a very common point. I was stuck for 2 hours roaming around trying to figure out where to go (I think it was to enter the whale?) and finally gave up and looked online. Fuck you.

It also doesn't help that the instruction manual is kind of vague and if you play without a manual you will have no idea what anything does. I didn't know for the longest time what the weird symbols meant in the pause menu (I think if it's moving it means there are lots of monsters around or something? I don't even remember).

her hybrid form in BoFIII resembles a rabbit, though

Grassrunners are probably like those races in MMORPGs where the differences between males and female forms are more than just genitals. Male Grassrunners have a more dog-like appearance, muzzles and all. Females on the other hand will have either rabbit or fox characteristics. Probably why they don't call them Dog-men or Hound Clan... they're meant to encompass more than just canines.

I don't think anything was cut. Half way through development though Yoshitora decided he wasn't pleased with his art and redrew all of the game's art in the style we got now. Basically III was going to have an art style like I and II but was changed during development. This is the reason why young Ryu, Teepo, and Nina's sprites look nothing like their final art, it's based on the original art.

First time playing BoF3 here. The story is very fresh, but man, I hate the fact that Game Over resets progress. BoF2 didn't have this problem. I'm fine with grinding, I'm fine with losing money, but REGRINDING is just too much. It's not like in an action game where I can do better while replaying and derive pleasure from having improved - I'm just killing the same googly-eyes shart yet again. There is some suspense from fear of losing, but I really have to force myself to replay after a Game over. I've killed the Nue thing and got two Game Overs up to this point. Now I'm doing some boring as fuck stealth mision in the mansion and by god, if I am killed after this and have to regrind, I won't be able to force myself to continue.

Speaking of which, I really appreciate how IV's battle system handles the team by not locking your combat party to the people in the front. Having the rest as support or just resting made for dynamic battles and nice variety. The first game already had an in-battle swapping system (one of the best things in it) but IV polished it in a way I don't remember any other JRPG to make the whole team useful.
