He throws rays

Because he’s RAYMAN

It's because it's even easier to animate. Rayman's entire character design is a giant case of "couldn't be fucked" lol.

Always thought rayman 2 was the only good entry for this piece of shit character

This is why channers are unemployed virgins not game designers. The golden powerup in rayman 1 basically gave you infinite machine gun fists and it would look dumb in 3D.

I played Rayman 1 and 2 as a kid but I always preferred Rayman 1's aesthetic.
Always bugged me how in Rayman Origin's, which is supposed to be an origin story, it uses the tone and feel of Rayman 2, even including Globox as a playable character and the fact that you can't use Rayman's signature long punch attack because of Globox and the two teensies not being able to do that.

Now that I think of it, the two playable teensies being player 3 and 4 really reminds me of how you get two toads for player 3 and 4 in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Huh

They're not retro, but Origins and Legend are great. Easily some of the best modern 2d platformers out there

I couldn't agree more anon, it feels like the Rayman franchise is basically just trying to forget that Rayman 1 ever existed. But I don't get why, like you I prefer the aesthetic of 1.

Something I'd love to see would be a remixed version of Rayman 1. Same bare bones plot but with new/redesigned levels. The graphics look very pleasing anyway, doesn't seem to be much need to go down the Globox and co route for artistic design.

That's exactly what it is. I mean I don't mind Rayman 2's tone and that most games will follow this tone, but I thought for a prequel for Rayman 1, we'd get more references and elements than what actually got put in the game. Betilla the fairy looks drastically different in Origins (and unnecessarily sexualised), we also got a reference to Mr. Dark, which was pretty cool, and I believe there was supposed to be a remix for the Mr. Dark theme but we never got that.
>Something I'd love to see would be a remixed version of Rayman 1. Same bare bones plot but with new/redesigned levels.
I wish we got the 2D Rayman 2 game that they were working on. I understand why they ended up going for the 3D version that we have today, but it's a shame that we didn't get to see what the 2D Rayman 2 game would look like, aside from the first level.

>> No.6329008

I don’t think they tried to forget it, they just did what they wanted and didn’t concern themselves with lore too much. 3 being more like 2 was just an easy design choice

They're better than any of the retro games in the series in my opinion. These are the sequels they would have been making if not for the fifth gen's obsession with 3D to the exclusion of everything else.

That's a fair point. And I can see why at the time a ubisoft dev team would want to make a push into 3D games. I suppose what I really meant was through a series of events its been kind of pushed to the side, and that I think that's a damn shame.

>>6329001
Have you got anymore info about the 2D Rayman 2? Like have any former devs given interviews about it? I'd be interested in learning more.

So here's something that irritates me:
Rayman 1 throws his fist... Well, threw a third fist as both hands are still with him.
Rayman 2, Arena/M/Rush shoots out energy balls
Rayman 3 returns the fist throwing, but the GBA version is the only one done right, as he can throw both of his fists and it shows... Feet, too.

Origins, Legends, Adventures, etc. is more sprite based, but Rayman doesn't throw his fists at long range (makes some sense where you're able to play as other characters besides him).

>> No.6330850

I legitimately didn't know that there was a third Rayman game. Was it a poor seller with poor advertising?

It sold over a million and has decent reviews.
>poor advertising
It's infamous for the pic related advertisement. But I don't think it was heavily advertised.
It just came out in an era when those kinds of games weren't that popular. That might be way you've never heard of it.

The noughties were when the collectathon craze was starting to die out. The case couldn't have been more obvious than with Pac-Man World 2, a collectathon where the collecting is completely optional. As if the style fell out of favor.

I remember as a kid I had the shitty pc port of Rayman 1, and the music was fine but for some reason my sound card didn't want to play the sound effects. I'm sure nowadays I could easily find a solution but it was wierd going back to it a decade later in emulation and hearing the sounds.

That's nowhere near the same game. That game is just a Game Boy version of the final Rayman 2 game.
I was referring to the game that they showed off before the 3D one was in development

They appealed to the masses and then quickly forgot about Rayman
