This is the only entertainment value I can get out of modern games outside of the extremely rare exception like Dark Souls.

Look, I love Kingdom Hearts's batshit insane story, but FF7 is not KH. FF7 is still a reasonably coherent, logical plot which is the opposite of KH. Kingdom Hearts, especially the first game, is (fittingly) narratively structured much more like an early Disney film where emotion is more important than logic, where what the audience feels about a situation matters more than whether or not the situation makes sense. Snow White is the perfect example of that, and honestly I find works like that fascinating. Snow White is poisoned and falls into a deep sleep, the Prince finds her, kisses her and she wakes, and then they ride off happily ever after. Ok, how did he find her? Did he know the kiss would wake her? Why are they suddenly in love when they've met like once in their life? Those things don't matter in a world of emotion, you want to see the happiest of endings after the saddest of tragedies. Persona 5 is very much in the same way.

They're time ghosts that show up whenever something would happen that would change a major plot event in the game. That's just after Cloud was about to ISIS style behead Reno, for example. They showed up to stop him.

Jessie was about to throw a grenade to destroy the helicopter that would otherwise kill her but the time ghosts sabotaged it to make sure she'd die. Barret is killed by Future!Sephiroth but is revived by the ghosts. Hojo reveals Cloud is not a SOLDIER and the time ghosts interfere before he can divulge more. Sephiroth wants the party to kill the time ghosts, presumably so he can change the events of the story to suit his agenda and goals.

Never played the original. Played the demo of the remake, I thought it was good.

The combat is like KH but slower, which isn't a bad thing. I got the impression that it will get more complex as the game progresses.
