Sakaguchi wasn’t canned because Spirits Within failed, maybe tangentially. When you see guys like that get the axe, it’s usually a much more short-sighted cost-saving measure. Like, some soulless bureaucrat didn’t think “Ah, clearly Sakaguchi has lost his touch,” they thought, “Hey, I can save our bonuses if I shed this guy’s ever-inflating salary.” It’s much less interesting.

I love Sakaguchi but his fuck-up was huge. Spirits Within is one of the biggest box office bombs ever. They lost so much money it's amazing the entire company didn't go belly up.
And honestly that was Sakaguchi's way, he always bets the entire house and everything else. Happened with the first Final Fantasy and with Final Fantasy VII. If either of those failed it would've put Square near-bankruptcy or worse. He was fortunate in that they both paid off in a big way. His luck ran out with Spirits Within.

This sort of thing depends on how far up the CEO’s or other executives’ asses they are. Otherwise these guys who are on the planning and directing side of things can be seen as expendable. Then they just promote someone else who’s way further down the pay ladder like Nomura thinking all the creatives do essentially the same thing, which is how we ended up with the Kingdom Hearts universe.

Now ask yourself, why did non of the FF fanbase follow him? Why did the FF fanbase remain with SE? If you where a trully FF fan, you had follow him, and buy his games but instead, the fanbase continued to buy SE version of FF.

Is supporting a faceless companie the reason why everything went to shit?

FFVII is an overrated piece of trash, FFVI is so bare bones basic it's a snore fest once you learn that 90% of Characters are useless and more then have the game is Linear. FFVIII though good in some aspects fall flat on it's face in the end.

the way i see it, they made two colossal blunders with that movie.
first of all, sakaguchi should have never tried to direct it himself when he had no previous experience making movies. that was always too risky for the big-screen debut of a franchise this iconic. what they should have done was hire a seasoned veteran director and put sakaguchi in an advisory role.
the other big mistake was making a generic sci-fi movie and putting the final fantasy name on it. they would have been better off adapting one of the games. maybe start with ff1 and plan to keep adapting the rest of the games if it was successful.

This. When corporate culture gets inflated with management team upon management team, eventually their connection to the team gets lost, and they don't know how to assign value to them apart from their direct dollar cost.

Eventually this shit gets so fucked up that all you have is management, and not enough people who actually know how to do the work. That fresh kid out of college costs much less than this experienced guy, but without training from that experienced guy, he's actually worth much, much less. Practicly negative since a whole team of them could cost you a ton of revenue in failed or delayed ventures.

Always beware of companies with too many chiefs, and not enough Indians.

it was the only sakaguchi post-square decent game.
Still not a good game

Yeah but Bouncer was a lower budget release title just to get something out for Sony on launch. FF:SW was a huge failure that almost pissed away everyone's work and the whole company, so there is no way they can justify giving him another big project when you have other creators who didn't fuck up and should get their turn, so he either had to move aside or leave, and he did, then that didn't work out as planned, and Terra Battle 2 getting canned was pretty much all she wrote.

I don't know how anyone can see how Sakaguchi did post Square and think that it was a mistake to fire him.

He clearly lucked into his successes or was propped up by some other unnamed staff member at Square so when deprived of either it really shows

Name 5 (five) other video game directors that did anything noteworthy after they were fired/left the company they had their success with and started their own.

You literally cannot. It is not the Sak mans fault his games were mediocre at best afterwards, he simply did not have the resources to create masterpiece after masterpiece that he did when he was with Square.

Keichiro toyama with siren and gravity rush
Tokuro fujiwara first with megaman(Fujiwara was at first in konami) and second with tombi
Iga
Suda51
Uchikoshi with 999
The Street fighter duo with Fatal fury and KoF
The SF2 creator with Super Dragon ball
And I can find more.

The only worthwhile one you've listed there is Fatal Fury and KoF. 999 was an okay visual novel, but the sequel were all trash. Super Dragon Ball was an awful fighting game.

If we're pulling out mediocre games like that, might as well include Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey too, those are pretty much as "okay" as 999 and Gravity Rush.

And Iga hasn't done anything worthwhile. Bloodstained, again was okay at best. A far cry from the masterpieces he worked on in the past. He wasn't even involved with the 2D one that was actually good, either.

Most people who like 999, gravity rush or No more Hero didn't know about twilight syndrome, ever17 or silent hill when they played it(or they don't know is made by the same director).
More people who like Blue dragon and Lost Odyssey they like because is sakaguchi or because they want to believe "is the real FF12 to me".Is fake enjoying.
Also, people like suda , iga or even keichiro and uchikoshi are still relevant unlike sakaguchi. Even Fujiwara is now more recognize as the father of megaman
Sakaguchi was a great director and a great producer, but after square was a protoInafune.

This is probably true. It happens here in the states as well. It's always cheaper the pay a junior, even if the work takes a bit longer. Look at what happened to American McGee.

lol Damn I wish more corporations went the approach of bankrupting their studios so that five years down the line they can get back to their net balance of zero. Yup, let's lose money to make money guys, it's totally the same thing as the stock market.
Making less money over a longer period of time + putting your entire financial situation in jeapordy + the genius of neckbeards off /vr = more money

In fact, I'm just gonna borrow a lot of money from someone and when they ask for it, I'm gonna say "Wait, I'll have it all back to you 20 years from now."

Pretty linear but it worked for the strange take on a cover shooter with magic. I actually enjoyed a cover shooter for once.
And plenty of enemy variety that kept you on your toes.
