Would you recommend Dragon Quest & FF games to someone who Is a fan of old CRPGs like Ultima, Wizardry and Might & Magic? Other than the pre-made characters, are there that many differences in gameplay's blue print?

I would have said if you came from DQ and FF and wanted to try their inspirations but in this way I'm not sure if you're going to like the simplifications they made with 2 of the most popular JRPG franchises.

Eh, maybe and maybe not. You might like 'em, but they're difficult to compare all right. If you like the early Wizardry (1-3,5) and M&M (just 1&2) games then you might see similarities in early DQ and FF. Since you're obviously comfortable with first person dungeoning I'd recommend Phantasy Star (1) as a better introduction to classic JRPGs. It's got plenty of oldschool RPG feel with exploration and open endedness and a hell of a lot better presentation than any RPG on a Nintendo console would for at least 9 years.

>Other than the pre-made characters
That really depends on the game. Ultima 4 onward have pre-made characters whereas DQ3 has free character creation. Just try them out and don't assume all are the same.

Nothing, it's just different. There's not much one could recommend that's similar to Wizardry 4. Let's not go into describing Wiz 4 though, that game has derailed many a thread, you'll see the copypastas and images about it in no time flat, they're posted every few days.

The Megaten games have some similarity in gameplay though you summon single demons and not groups of them.
The difficulty is obviously on another level.

Probably not. I read the CRPG addict, a guy who's waaaay in to CRPGs, he fucking hated console RPGs, ripped them to shreds and complained the entire time about how the graphics were too cartoony

>Winning the game becomes possible when the player improves, not the character. [Edit: I didn't mean to necessarily attach any value to that final statement. Clearly, games in which the player gets better and wins via his own dexterity are fun, too. I was simply distinguishing Zelda from an RPG, in case anyone still wonders what makes it different.]

Dragon Warrior (at least the early titles) are open world but compare to Ultima honestly may as well not be. You are technically free to go anywhere but monsters will increase in power to the point to directly discourage you from going too deep. I have no strong opinions about FF beside the fact it is kinda shit as a role playing game, they use the term extremely loosely more so with the later titles. Real talk, you play the best of what can be offered. You basically downgrading and just scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point sadly.

>> No.6320357

Dragon Quests IV and V are pretty cool in terms of scenario.

Final Fantasy 1 is pretty open regarding party composition.

I'd also recommend Phantasy Star, that game still looks great and is a fun dungeon crawler

>> No.6320363

OP here, would SaGa be more of my taste If I want something sandboxy and without a main plot? How is the gameplay in Earthbound and Chrono Trigger? Is Live A Live good? As an Eva fag, Is Xenogears a must play? I am open to anything as long as it's not more story and little gameplay games, Thanks

Can't speak for Saga
Chrono Trigger is easy, but worthwhile. It has a nice New Game + feature, with multiple endings.
Final Fantasy Tactics could be a good intro to the series, it has the most character customisation of the bunch.
FF VI is good, but it takes ~20 for you to be let off the leash and for the world to open up.

How much do you like Dungeon Crawlers?

I think dragon quest would be at least worth trying, just perhaps not worth finishing for a crpg fan. Jrpgs got popularized for being a more casual version of crpgs, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but a fan of one may or may not like the other. DQ1 is really short though, so if you try it for an hour or two you’ll probably know wether or not it’s for you.

>>6317824
>lol? he's not even belligerent, Nintendo fans are just salty that that there are unconverted pagans who don't give a fuck about their sacred cows.
My favorite game series of all time is probably a tie between mario and zelda and im a pretty big nintendofag overall, but this is agonizingly true. So many nintendo fans are thinskinned pussies who cant handle their games being criticized (especially when it’s for, god forbid, being exceptionally childish).

>>6320363
I’ll only speak for the games I’ve played:
Chrono is commonly considered among the peak of the genre, and it eventually offers a good amount of customization regarding party composition and equipment. If you were to play one jrpg this is a solid choice.

Earthbound is weird. Inventory management can turn a lot of people away but if you’re coming from crpgs that wont be a problem. Unique in that you should be using magic almost constantly, and you get a heal spell very early so just packing magic restoring items instead of health ones makes dealing with inventory much easier (though in battle will cost you an extra turn). There’s a few unique gameplay elements but frankly that’s not what you play it for, it’s more about the weird settings and comedic dialogue and the eventual hard hitting moments. More of a story game than a game game honestly.

Emulation is so easy you should know pretty quickly wether you want to ‘stick with’ these games or not. From crpgs I think you’d enjoy CT/EB more than DQ/FF because they have more original ideas and mechanics and arent just watered down crpgs.

Metal Max seemed pretty open from what I played.

>> No.6323318

If you're looking for something open-worldy like Ultima, you'll hate JRPGS. The only two truely open JRPGs I've played are Dragon Quest 2 and 3 (Like 1/3 to 1/2 is open in 3).
For Wizardry styled games I guess SMT.

>> No.6323326

>>6322285
Metal Max lets you skip a lot of locations but there are some choke points on the map you have to pass through to advance and enemies grow stronger the further you go though you can flee from every battle.

Meanwhile in a typical Ultima you have almost the entire map available right from the start but you have to visit everything eventually. Enemies depend on your character level but can be outmaneuvered.
