This game, barely qualifies as retro by the rules (came out in '99) but still a great classics and one of the rare mix of western RPG and jRPG - I may even say that in some way I was more charmed by it than by many of the Final Fantasy.

So, did you play Septerra Core? And if not, what are you doing here instead of getting it?

I remember two things about that game as a kid.
1. It started fucking hard with really slow battles
2. It was fucking easy after finding a godlike card combination

Oh, and Selina was constantly getting on my nerves.

I did play it and yes it is way better than any FF game out there.

I found it quite enjoyable back in the day.

I replayed it a couple years ago and it's still a fun ride. Although I was a bit irritated by ill-disguised series of fetch quests.
Still, it's a unique game and I recommend it to anyone looking for a new experience.

Also, dat Led.

>> No.630913

>>630883
Yeah, Led was fine. Though for me it was always slightly weird as she quite much like my acquaintance from back then. At the same time the game was unknown enough that there's almost no Rule 34 content generated for it - for better or worse.

>>630913
*looked quite much (I mean, if the style would be a bit more realistic).

>> No.630918

It was a pretty enjoyable game.
Not as good as the Final Fantasys, but it filled the gap between FF7 and FF8.

It's hilarious when you recognize all the inspirations
like FF (obviously) but also many popular 90s anime like Battle Angel Alita, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Macross and Record of Lodoss War.

The only real problem is that the combats and dungeons feel tedious at times.

>> No.630930

The world was really cool and original, with the different layers and everything, though I think the characters kind of sucked aside from the novelty factor of each. The twist with the one guy's girlfriend was cool, though. And holy shit, the battling needed speeding up and streamlining, I think you spend like fifty hours in combat.

>>630883
I kind of liked the inventory-based segments, but then again I've always been a fan of point-and-click adventure games.

Have to agree, sometimes it was just boring, boring grind time, but not much more than in most jRPGs of that age.

>>630936
Well, I think you can turn a blind eye on that as, as it's a western made eastern-style rpg.
They simply didn't have much experience with that kind of gameplay.
They did try to give it a unique twist with the weapon upgrades (which I really liked) and the card-based magic (which I actually never really used).

>> No.630956

>>630953
The cards were OP as shit. Chaos + Law + Mirror = Battle Over.

>> No.630973

>>630953
Card-combining magic thing was actually quite cool, with one exception - when you took a break from the game for a longer time, you couldn't just load some save and keep on going because all the combinations and situations in which they were fitting just fled your mind. Or at least, they did mine. I mean, I knew the basic - healing oneself, doing simple damage - but evoking some ultimate attacks with unique animations etc somehow wasn't well-utilized even when I've checked said ocmibnations online.

Oh man, I loved this game so, so hard when I was a kid.

Especially the character designs (Runner, Lobo, Badu) were like the epitome of cool for me, at that time.

>> No.630982

>>630956
Well, first you had to get those cards and learn the combination. Also, I think that actually there was shit resistant to certain attacks.

I played it four years ago. It was boring.

For worse anon. Always, for worse.

>> No.631024

Well, the world was quite unique. Too bad that the game was very, very linear (even when you became able to travel between different layers, you couldn't really move story forward without doing some particular thing and there were just a few additional quests and one secret bird thingie).

I do like the mood. First a bit of nomad-scavengerish, then some steampunk, sci-fi, all kinds of stuff.

Maybe /d/, /h/ or /r/ could be consulted to help us solve this issue? Or maybe any of you is a decent enough drawfag?

>> No.631053

If the level design wasn't ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE (pull lever 1 at one end, pull lever 2 at the other end, repeat forever) it would be a good game.

>> No.631092

This game was one of those "awesome game that came as a demo in a magazine" I played but could never find it for sale anywhere.

>> No.631101

Funny, I got it as a full cover version on a game magazine.

>> No.631119

>>631101
Those were really nice. Too bad most games were crappy shovelware.
Sometimes you could find some real gems, though. I got Silver from one of those magazines.

>> No.631134

>>631101
That's how I more or less got all my games
and the sole reason I bought gaming mags.

Fallout 1 for 5 bucks? Sure.
Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 + expansions for 4.99? Yeah, why not?
Gothic 1 and 2 + Night of the Raven for 5 dollars? Here's 10!

>> No.631137

>>631092
>>631101
Same here. First played a demo from one magazine, then after few years it was among full versions (even with some text translation, I believe!) in another magazine. I won't lie, I bought it then just for this one single game, and I don't regret it. Still got CD, though I don't know if it works.

>> No.631139

>Too bad most games were crappy shovelware.
Depends on where you live.

In Czech Republic, you could get real gems on magazines like LeveL or Score.

Planescape: Torment, Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete, Rollercoaster Tycoon (all of them), Septerra Core, Fallout 1 & 2 & Tactics, Jagged Alliance 2, Arcanum, Mount & Blade + Warband, Gothic 1 & 2 (+NotR) & 3, the entire Broken Sword series, MDK 1 &2, Re-Volt, Anarchronox, Original War, Grim Fandango, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, Might and Magic 6 & 7 & 9, Dungeon Keeper II, Albion, and many, many more that I can't remember right now...

... all that I got from those magazines.

>> No.631150

>>631134
Heh, kinda the same though I cannot say I've bought mags just for full games. I liked going through reviews, mails, hell - I was reading adventure game walkthroughs as if they'd be stories! Good times.

But yeah, Septerra Core had somewhat dull, grindy fighting but the immersive world and allure of the story made up it for me back then. I actually considered installing it again some time ago, but I am worried that - even if the game will work - I'll be unable to find the same magic.

>> No.631148

>>631139
And you didn't even have to wait long for most of them, PS:T came out with Score one year after its release, IIRC. If it weren't for that magazine, I would probably never had heard about the game, and wouldn't have played it as a ~11 years old. Hell, I'd perhaps be a completely different person / a pleb.

>> No.631157

We also had a fair share of games in magazines in Germany.

>> No.631168

>>631139
Also, Metal Fatigue -- I mean, Jesus Christ, I had literally never heard about that game before, I hadn't seen it anywhere else and bam! - full version and it's amazing as fuck.

I wish more people had bought MF when it came out. Or at least someone.

Oh yeah, and Battle Realms too.

Can't you pretty much officially buy pirated copies of new games everywhere for like 5 bucks?
Or is that only in russia?

I remember playing the Demo.

Check out the Front Mission games.

Anyway! Septerra Core. You make me try to play it again. And then, I need some decent /h/ drawfag to draw me a nice Led and Maya scene.

Of course not. Game industry is pretty competent in Central Europe so copyright laws are properly enforced. I doubt it works in Russia either. Capitalism everywhere.

>> No.632305

>So, did you play Septerra Core?

Between three to five times, yes. The ending is pretty hilarious. It's apparently not a good idea to reenact the struggle of the gods while carrying symbols or objects associated with them in that universe.

>> No.632391

The bad guy wins, Maya's hometown gets destroyed, the entire protagonist actions were pointless. I hated the ending.

>> No.635708

>>632391
How so? I thought that the bad guy turned good, saw the err of his ways, and Maya becomes an Immortal machine or something like that, like Corgan's waifu did before her.
