While having to stay at home, games obviously are a good way to stay occupied (retro ones especially). But few of them are so dangerous for me than this one... I know no other game I got so much lost in. What is it about this game ?

>> No.6307560

Good question, because this game is real crap.

When I played it I was impressed by the highly irritating sound of the skeletons screaming over and over and over. Why do skeletons scream to begin with? Why would the developers have chosen such an annoying sound clip to give them? Why does nobody else complain about this? Do they not experience it? Was my copy glitched? These are the questions I have about Daggerfall.

Sorry OP. It is a cool game but it also is indeed kind of garbage??

Some people say it was sort of a tech demo, to try how big an open world could be. It is indeed the size of a real country, and having SO MUCH stuff means it has a number of bugs that even Fallout 76 can't match. The music can bug, the ssound bugs around light sources, the enemies clip or kill themselves, you can clip through the floor or walls, quests might not work properly, quest items may not appear, NPCs might not speak to you or give/end quests, saves may get corrupt... It is a hardcore experience.
And yes, you WILL get lost. Except the main quest locations, any other dungeon is randomly made with certain "blocks" that dont allow you to follow right hand rule or so, so sidequests are sometimes impossible. The v1.0 is impossible to finish because the main quest is bugged.
If you don't know what you are doing you'll get killed pretty quick at high levels; on the other side, you can also make a titanic allmighty character with the right choices.

It's fucking wild. Play it if you like it, but I'd recommend a good patched version and a guide.
Or try Morrowind instead.

>It is a cool game but it also is indeed kind of garbage?
Thats a good way to describe everything Bethesda ever made

I'm about halfway through the main quest, I think, with my mage character.
Here are some things I'd do differently a hypothetical next time-
-Take the ebony dagger at character creation.
-Use invisibility to get through dungeons, instead of relying on offensive spells that drain magicka quickly.
-Don't minmax leveling and endurance in order to eke out more hp, because it's not that much difference, and wisdom and speed attributes would have helped a lot more.
-Don't worry too much about money and picking up every single loot. After horse and basic gear, money is no longer a concern, and how much money you make scales quickly as you level. Probably don't need a cart.
-Rely on magic items for spamming spells, especially offensive spells, because they hold a lot of charge.
-Don't join a temple just to get Restore Power potions, because they restore very little power, and it's very difficult to find the specific potion recipe.
-With the above tips, don't have to grind so much to get started- just get on with the main quest.

Of course, if I were to play next time, it would be with Daggerfall Unity, because glitching through the stairs and having to load the last save gets old really quickly. Also, Daggerfall Unity adds fun features like random encounters in the wilderness, and the option to have smaller dungeons.

Oh, and use the switch hands hotkey to get fists to break open locked doors instead of wasting weapon durability or manually unequipping the character.

>> No.6309181

My method of not getting lost in dungeons is to leave a quick note with a letter ("N" for north etc) pointing back towards the entrance at every intersection - it's a little tedious but you'll get super quick with it after a while and makes exploration so much easier.

For me, it's that it's incredibly atmospheric. The music and the simple but effective weather effects like the rain and the snow, the moody dungeons, the far-off mysterious skyboxes, the feeling of being a tiny figure in an enormous world that doesn't care about you... it's kind of like RPG noir, if that makes any sense.

The dungeons are easy to get lost in even with a 3D map. Make sure that you have a pen and paper handy. When some tavern owner gives you a quest you’ll want to write down his name, the name of the tavern and the name of the town or else you’ll never remember who gave you the quest.

I love me some Elder Scrolls. Have been these games through and through since I was a little boy, especially Daggerfall and Morrowind. Recently I've been playing The Elder Scrolls Online and it's actually quite fun. Really shallow compared to anything you'd see in the older games, but I'm still having great time. I can't name a single other RPG similar to Elder Scrolls series which is a shame, not counting first person dungeon crawlers because they're not the same. Maybe the later Might & Magic games, but even those seemed to copy what Elder Scrolls did.

For me its the tits. Also, it feels like a roguelike more than an Elder Scrolls game, since everything is pretty samey, but with different layouts. I just wish the whole thing wasn't so fucking broken. Nothing like having to save before accepting any quest because you never know if an NPC you need won't be there or a door you need to go through will just not be functional, so the quest is just worthless.

Eventually. Apparently, while Bethesda doesn't send cease-and-desist orders to people who make things like OpenMW and Daggerfall Unity, they do insists that the owners of such projects not officially support mobile ports.

Of course, there's very little barring such a thing from being done, technically. It'll just need to be compiled for Android with the filesystem and control kinks worked out. In all likelihood, there'll be a mobile port of Daggerfall Unity around the time the project is in beta or release candidate. Perhaps even before, if someone gets on it.

In the meantime, Daggerfall is playable using DosBox on mobile.

Yeah apparently someone tried to compile it for Android already but ran into trouble doing so.
I'm currently playing it for the first time on my phone, runs great and I set up an easy-to-use interface. The tips in this thread are really helpful.

>> No.6312221

>>6311804
It looks like somebody with no experience just tried to directly compile it for Android and it failed at a part of the script that tried to create a window (I don't know anything about Unity, but it makes sense that that wouldn't be valid for an Android port). Someone else with more knowledge was successful on a different forum in creating a basic build. Someone who actually has experience developing for Unity will need to take a look.

It's always up to the creator to optimize their game, but yes, Unity has a lot of creators that suck at that. What's worse, Unity games tend to just crash on me after less than 30min of playing, with an unidentified error to boot.

So Morrowind isn't /vr/, which means that we just have to put up with Daggerfall threads forever?

Going thru the faction files ive noticed there's a prostitute guild in the game. A few times ive tried speaking to one and they'd offer me a quest so i'd take it and do it (typical commoner quests) and she just kept giving me quests one after another. I later checked my charactors rep after doing like 25+ quests for her and had a max rep with the prositutes guild. Did nothing in game but all the chicks in taverns that were ladies of the night were always very happy to see my guy. Even got a few others to give me quests once it was built up. Ah alas so many unfinished features this game could have had

I think they purposefully kept that one out of the final version. Moral brigading wasn't invented circa 2015, it existed back then as well (see the Mortal Kombat controversy, or the one about blood&gore in early 3DFPS like Doom).
They probably didn't want the controversy, but didn't bother removing the code (maybe one of the programmers thought about sneaking in a 3rd party patch that would activate the entire asset branch or something).

Lots of games do this as of the late naughties. Apparently, going under a setting threshold quietly disables hardware rendering and enables software rendering, which takes all the load off the gpu and puts it on the cpu. Ergo, looks like shit and runs like shit to boot.

I'm honestly skeptical about how DFU is gonna turn out. One of the main reasons being it's on Unity.
