What's the best retro Kirby game?

>> No.6306320

Superstar. Boring answer, but it's true.

The ones not directed by Shitmomura.

Kirby 64 because I really liked the ability combining system

Kirby 64's ability combining system was interesting, but very poorly utilized. 90% of the time, it was little more than an excuse for "go combine bomb and fire to break this black and red checkered wall". The other games suffer from this occasionally too (almost always involving a puzzle that requires a hammer with the only hammer enemy being on the other end of the level), but Kirby 64 did it constantly.

Adventure > Super Star > Dream Land > shit > Dream Land 2 > Dream Land 3 > 64

Depends on what you're looking for, but probably Superstar. Though personally Kirby 64 is my fave, and Dreamland 3 is also pretty excellent.

Pretty much every Kirby game from Nightmare in Dreamland onward kind has the same feel as Superstar more or less, so there is something nice about the Dark Matter games being less about a shitload of powers and more about mixing them with the helpers/other powers

Adventure is great but it has a lot of slowdown.

Does Air Ride count as retro yet?

It's a Japanese title, you dunce.
It's not "no kirby" that's the issue, it's the typo from "yo" to "ho".
They had to quickly remove all references to Yoshi when a deal with Nintendo fell under, sort of like a reverse doki-doki panic; no wonder they missed something so monumental.

Superstar.

also, not /vr/ but I'm currently working through my backlog of 3ds games and just finished Planet Robobot, GREAT game, very easy but very fun, highly recommend if you missed it

adventure

superstar is ok, but nowhere near as good
and the rest are really slow and boring

>> No.6307275

It depends entirely on my mood.

Superstar Was great because of the fighting game like moves you got with powers.

I liked 64's combo powers. I dunno if it's considered retro, but Return to dreamland was great also.

Superstar for me. Played it not too long ago and was really impressed by the controls. A masterpiece.

Didn't matter, I still loved it

>> No.6308206

Superstar for me. I loved all the different moves you could get out of one ability and it really does feel like a precursor to super smash bros. Hell, the subspace emissary in brawl is almost kirby super star in 2008. I also just loved the aesthetic of that game the most as well. The mish mash of pixel art and prerendered 3D works really well in it.

I will say though that adventure feels like the levels took more advantage of the different abilities. That game is probably second for me.
