8 has a great story and card/item mod is fun as shit, R1 for gunblade trigger is fun as shit too. It may have the same issue as 5, 6,7 and 13 where the characters all end up the same but the way trance and limit breaks work keeps characters feeling unique

The story is awesome if you just accept R=U is canon. I don't care if the director says it isn't canon, it makes far too much sense thematically and it explains the last dungeon and ultimate villians motivations perfectly.

Just beat the Dollet section and the boss was piss easy but took about 10 minutes of whacking it since it didn't have a weakness and I didn't have anyone set to use GF. Then after that you have to fight that stupid robot 3 fucking times, just to run from it each time and get 0 experience. Junctioning seems like a neat idea, but drawing magic and setting abilities seems to require a massive time investment just to get a decent build.

I never had this problem. Just finished the game after going in totally blind until I looked up puzzles in the last dungeon and the best places to grind. (Which I didnt really need to before then.) I never found anyone was a damage sponge.

Theres literall an auto button for everything. I used it most of the game unless I wanted specific weaknesses or something. Once I got like 60 ultimates doing a stupid quest with the shima stones and getting more whenever I went back Squall did a lot of damage.


I barely used GF I think you're supposed to just use them for junctioning.

Squall was in an orphanage with some other kids. OK, but he wasn't consistently in the same class with every one of them. Zell was adopted and was out of his life for years. Quistis was an elitist and was probably kept apart from the "commoners" once they realized how good she was. So Squall and Seipher would have seen the most of each other. And if I'm not mistaken, Squall acknowledges knowing Seipher the longest in some way.

Memories aren't perfect. I mean yeah, the plot twist in FFVIII is presented in a really forced feeling way. But you have to remember that these people have mostly been in different classes, different social circles and different schools even. They haven't seen or thought about each other except superficially in at least 13 years. Squall even goes out of his way to avoid socializing. So these people are all supposed to remember all being together as toddlers? Yeah, OK...

The GF thing is the only unrealistic element and people abuse it as justification to claim the whole thing is stupid. Period.

my thoughts:

the junction/draw system is so idiotic i'm still stunned it made its way into the game.

the graphics and sound were top notch for its time, the music and general sound design is still fine today.

the story seems okay. it's so bananas as is the world in general. i like the sci fi and art direction, but it's a bit too fantastical. i wish they found middleground between where they ended up, and something more accessible.

combat is painful since the second you find a new spell you're compelled to just draw until you're too annoyed to continue the battle.

i like how they tried to integrate the guardians but prefer what they did in 10 although i generally don't like 10.

holy shit the card game is addictive.

i'm 16 hours in and i probably could've been here in 10 hours, but i've been playing everyone in cards and trying to collect every card i don't have.

i am trying to do a 100% complete playthrough without a guide, then read a guide when i'm done just to see what i missed.

overall thoughts:
damn 8 has serious problems. i'm doing a low level playthrough since i never done it before. the issues are glaringly obvious. at the same time there is still that distinct ff flavor that all ff games after 10 are missing.

because of the great design aspects in terms of visuals and sounds ff8 gets an 8.

I never really got in on FF in general. So during this time or thereabouts I think I was into MM Legends.

Tried to not spoiler it but this many years one is bound to find out the story. Seemed okay for the first bit, what I read of it. Plot twist sounds like winging it. The rest is meh and yet we're told by the producer it is to be taken verbatim. Heard the theories, but don't buy them. Why even bother having an implied love triangle between Squall, Rinoa and Seifer if the three characters are NEVER in the same goddamn room having a conversation with each other?

Why any number of other things??? The first disc is basically solid but the subsequent plot twists and turns are just seemingly random and not thought out at all. I *kind of* get the implication that the cast are fallible because of their youth/inexperience and the whole GF thing is a botched commentary on the immorality of making child soldiers, but poor Squall's the only semi competent person in a room full of other characters who all at some point take the Stupid Ball and run the field with it. Many of them aren't really allowed to develop other than Rinoa whose depiction really only succeeds in portraying her as a spoiled brat AND gives credence to a plot theory she's the final villain that the devs didn't spot/realize at all was implied through the game.

The game autobalances itself to be unlosable. It's a toy rathern than a game. You can do a lot of things, but none of them are ever useful for anything. Even if you try to be underlevelled, the game just downscales enemy levels to ensure that you never have a chance to lose.

I'm playing through this game right now, just beat Brothers at the Tomb of the Unkown King. Right now I'll say this, I actually think the Junction system itself is pretty neat, and the game overall is slowly warming up to me. My only problem and I'm probably partly to blame for this, is that I can't stop forcing myself to Draw magic from enemies until I have 100 of that magic on every character. I'm not sure if it's really nessiary to do that but every time I see a new magic spell I always draw from it for all my party members and it really slows downs the pace of the game, am I just being really anal about this, should I not care about how much magic I draw from every battle? It's my only hiccup about this game so far, I even love how they handled getting gil in this game, I've never played very many (if at all, maybe Persona counts) JRPGs where you have a salary.

Drawing a lot of low level spells like Fire is pointless because you're going to use Firara and then Firaga, but spells that don't have a level like Sleep can be very useful. Low level cure is only useful if you don't want to buy potions, but in this game money is pretty much unlimited if you complete a few SeeD tests.

No offense but it's almost 100% your fault. You're doing the equivalent of grinding levels in the starting areas.

If you draw from each wild encounter you're good. Also Mod abilities on GFs are really good for avoiding grind later on. Not just card mod. (I literally didnt play triple triad, but then I got a card capture ability.)

It's all about finding a balance or your preferred play style. I think thats why the lavels scale with you. As long as you aren't dying your fine I guess. Personally I did farm by drawing a lot too when I wanted to but when the story was interesting I just did a couple at a time.

Diablos has a half encounter ability and no encounter ability which was great for avoiding grinds.

Once I got a feel for the element and status junctions it became more fun to draw too.

I'm a massive casual and this is the only FF I ever beat but I loved it for some reason.

I thought the whole point of it feeling contrived besides being cheesy( in a good way for me) was that they were all sibconciously drawn to eachother. There would have been a shitton of war orphans after the first sorceress war so the setup made sense. The only thing I didn't like was how Edea was brainwashed so it felt like she didn't have to take responsibility for her actions as sorceress but then she does anyways by sacrificing herself. So I was wrong. And I thought the time loop was a great twist.

I'd just like to add something to this conversation. I frequently see people mock the idea that all of the children at the orphanage miraculously ended up coming back together again. It's constantly labeled as a plothole, yet it makes quite a lot of sense in retrospect. At the time of Edea's possession, Cid is in the process of establishing the three gardens out of the unused Cetra shelters. After Edea is possessed, Cid is left with an orphanage of children that he knows he cannot care for by himself, so he takes them along with him to his new project, the Gardens, until such time as he can find a more suitable home for them. Squall, Seifer and Zell are taken to Balamb with Cid. Zell is adopted to the Dincht Family, while Quistis is sent off to a new home, but after problems, Cid decides to bring her back to the Garden with the others, who have at this point forgotten her. The reason Squall and Seifer weren't adopted was probably because they were the two most unlikeable children. Squall, withdrawn and miserable, Seifer a bully. This does NOT go on to explain why exactly Selphie and Irvine were sent to different Gardens, though. But I think it goes someway to explain that part of the story.


Also here is another possible point and meaning of the orphanage scene:
The main theme of FFVIII is fate and "Liberi Fatali" which translates to children of fate. Now as we all know Squall and co. are those children of fate and how they grew up together, forgot about each other and later on found each other again. I think this might be to strengthen their bond with each other in order to make them trust each other more and to be able to have friendship and love for each other for certain scene later on where it is needed. If they wouldn't had anything to do with each other before the event of the game they'd basically still be complete strangers for each other and not have any real reason to care about each other.
