Is "shodown" just an engrish misspell that stuck up to this day or is it supposed to mean something else?

So I guess it kinda is the result of ignorant gaijins attaching random japanese words to the title to make it sound cooler regardless of whether it makes sense or not. Kinda like what chinese do with their knockoff products.

Japanese language has nothing to do, it's a Wester pun.
The accepted theory is it's a portmanteau ofr "shogun showdown". We don't really know what actually happened.
It's easy to guess why "spirits" was removed, though: game is not a ghost story plus religious nuts might object because they of course feel that they own the word "spirit".

Well many people still believe its just a typo of engrish due to the franchise tendency of bad translations and SNKenglish, but really it was a pun of the full name whih was meant to be Samurai Shogun Showdown, heck they might as as well go all out and add a 4th word ala Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
