Does /vr/ prefer their shmups to have sparser, faster, more manic bullet patterns like Psikyo and Raiden or denser, slower, more mesmerizing bullet patterns like Cave and 2hu?

I prefer the checkpoint type
>Blazing Star
>RType
>Xexex (Japan version only)
>Rezon
>Truxton

Slower and denser patterns because it allows for more depth, but fast bullets can be more fun for survival because you have to do hard memo instead of flailing

I prefer pre bullethell shooters.

Ikaruga is the only game of this type worth playing, it generally has rather slow bullets but it's demeaning to lump it in with the products that Cave makes, let alone Touhou

Why?

IMO the perfect balance is early Psikyo and Toaplan stuff like Dogyuun. Fast, but not unseeable, and not quite screen filling enough to become a tedious slow paced danmaku. Many shmups that get really fast end up playing completely different as a result, and have you shut down enemies before they have a chance to shoot at all. Dragon Blaze and Vasara are great but they're barely even shmups at that point.

I like shmups with good varied level design, fun bosses, challenging but not unfair. I dont like cave shmups or manic shmups.

Psikyo bullets are unreactable they are very much on the dad end of the spectrum with maybe the exception of Dragon Blaze which has occasional more dense patterns. A better middle ground would be faster Cave games like DOJ or Ketsui in Ura loop. Generally speaking Cave games aren't slow paced, even Mushihimesama Futari Ultra has moments with lightning fast bullets in between all the slowdown.

Doj and ketsui patterns are pretty slow. And Mooshy was meant to be a throwback to shumps with lightning fast bullets compared to dodonpatch so not sure what your point is. The only actually fast Cave game is Dangun.

They aren't, particularly not in the second loop. They are reactable which distinguishes them from the likes of Psikyo but by no means slow.

No that was Original mode of the very first Mushi, neither Maniac nor Ultra followed that mentality, and Futari did its own thing even if you play Original mode. Futari Ultra is the mode I am talking about, its often brought up as an example of slow bullets and micrododging but if you actually play it there's a ton of fast patterns and once the slowdown goes away shit hits the fan, big time.

Dangun so based, wish Cave had made sequels to that instead of just rehashing the ddp formula.
