The PSIO site says there are only two games it doesn't work "at all" with, Vib Ribbon and Jackie Chan stuntmaster. Are there other games that "work" but have glitches? Or do all other games play flawlessly?

>Are there other games that "work" but have glitches?
Yes. When this thing came out practically nothing worked 'flawlessly' but I think they've been patching things away little by little and it's better now. Go by posts on the forums rather than the website since they'll have more honestly, it's definitely not the flashcart standard you'd expect but it works in a pretty hacky way so it's a given.

I never bothered updating my firmware so it might be fixed, but if you play a lot of multi disc games, having to restart when you change might be annoying. I don't care, but some people did.

Bought one when they first came out and can confirm, it's a piece of fucking shit. The thought process behind updates/fixes makes little sense and they're constantly fixing 1 thing then breaking 3 more.

Anyone even remotely interested in this thing...there's still good CDR stock out there to find (not gonna start a brand pref bitch fest), grab a hundred pack and a Mayumi mod chip and save yourself like 60-70 bucks and have something that fucking works. Don't give these kangaroo fuckers any of your money.

The only hope is for someone new to enter the scene with a drive replacement mod like the Saturn and Dreamcast have, following PSIO's development was a fun trainwreck, everyone with any experience in the field knew his plug-and-play idea would never work and he just kept pushing through until he half-heartedly made it a hacky full mod at the last minute. While he's been deliberately obtuse about its awful compatibility since release, I can at least give him credit for TRYING to fix it, as you said though it's been stuck in a cycle of breaking shit forever. What's the point?

What bothers me the most is how limited it is with the PSX models, only compatible with the ones that have the serial port, otherwise if you have the regular gray one without it or a PSOne, you're fucked.
Also the whole concept behind it is retarded, "Have a little flashcart for your PSX that you can carry with you!" except you need to solder shit in order to make it work (which shows how under-developed this project really is), where at that point you might as well order a modchip and some blank CD-Rs, and call it a day.

>> No.6287968

Everytime I see a thread about the PSIO, I always read about how fucking awful they are, without anyone actually explaining what glitches they've encountered and what doesn't work.
Maybe it's because I haven't played tons of games on mine, but the only problem I ever faced was with Spyro 2. It would always freeze after a certain trigger. All I had to do was change something with the sound and it was all fixed.
If you have more examples, please let me know.

Fear Effect is unplayable after Disc 1 because you can't swap discs and there is no saving before disc swaping like most multi disc games when it comes to Fear Effect.

Vib Ribbon uses an audio CD to "create" the stages you play. Another game that may not work correctly is Monster Rancher, which gave you creatures based on which audio CD you put in the drive.

Jackie Chan seems to use some weird data-seeking method, it's notorious that it doesn't work correctly on a bunch of emulators. Even Sony's official emulator has slowdowns in it.

>> No.6288042

>>6287997
IIRC Vib Ribbon has its own default music so if that worked I'd count it as at least partially working.

If you think about it most CDDA audio games will just play/stop/etc. Vib Ribbon must also use the disc audio as data which is probably what's causing problems.

Why would people go this route rather than just a far-cheaper, more reliable modchip? Is it purely because of the laser/not wanting to burn CDs?
I get softmodding consoles nowadays so they can remove it easily for online stuff but why a console with no such concerns?

>> No.6288184

>Is it purely because of the laser/not wanting to burn CDs?
Best I can figure. I remember back when this was first coming out, and I was asking why anyone would spend $200 on this when you could get a modchip and a stack of CD-Rs for less than $40. Every response was "I don't want to constantly have to change CDs" or "muh lazer dies every 3 months". I don't believe either complaint is legit, I still believe it was people shilling to try and make their purchase seem less stupid.

My main gripe is the shady false promises and their piss poor attitude. When the SSDS3 first came out, it had a few major issues but the guys at Terraonion tried to make it right, sure they got uppity and had a shitty attitude but they ended up taking in feedback from the community and accepting help from guys like Voultar to fix the problems. It's really their callous, "you're gonna eat out shit sandwich and you're gonna like it mate" attitude and indifference that gets me.

Hopefully someone will show up on the scene with a competing product. I'd be down for something even like mnemo's 3DO FZ-10 mod that requires lifting and IC and soldering a ribbon cable to a dozen or so points if it actually works well and is solid.

In my case, I had a lot of issues with getting games to run reliably without skipping. Even using TY old stock, Verbatim AZO, multiple CD burners, multiple speeds, replacing the laser, etc. I did basically all the shit you're supposed to do to get burned games to work and would regularly have issues.

This was suppose to be a good alternative, and I've been relatively happy with mine, but it's got a lot of problems that I'm hoping somebody else on the scene can fix at some point.

I've owned one for about a year now. About 9/10 games I've thrown at it work well as they should. No FMV skipping or audio issues. The only games that didn't work for me were Chrono Cross and a couple of libcrypt games but I think there is a workaround to getting them working. Part of me thinks that all the negativity surrounding this thing stems from the insecurity of its detractors. Yes, we know that you can break out a solding iron and install a 8 wire modchip like that's anything other than babbies first modding job. You don't need to remind us on how capable you are.

>DURRRR WHY YOU GOTTA INSTALL THE SWITCHBOARD JUST PUT IN A MODCHIP AND BURN CDR'S
The switch board has the same amount of wires as the modchip. It's really not hard to install all. All the documentation is there. If you actually knew what you were talking about you'd realise that the switchboard has to be installed for a good reason. Sick of people bashing on this product and spreading lies.
TL;DR: Compatibility is fine and it's the switchboard is the same effort to install a modchip anyway.

PS2 network adapter, its an official thing they made for.. Final Fantasy online or something.
but.. if you stick an IDE HDD in there (or you can buy an eSata version from china) (or use an IDE2CF or IDE2SD adapter) then you can put iso or bin/cue files on there and play them straight from the HDD as long as your system is modded in any way.
