So is there a point to things like OSSC and Frame Meister if your HDTV still has Component/Composite inputs? Are retro inputs in HDTVs really that rare? Are they for recording retro games with capture cards?

Your TV will upscale in exactly one way that you have no control over. The OSSC device will let you control the upscale, including nearest-neighbor methods that work best with old games.

OSSC is technically a line doubler, not a scaler like the Frameister but yeah these types of devices do a much better job that your TVs shitty built in upscaler, introduce very minimal lag, scale/upsize the image in an appropriate way, etc. Really there's tons of info out there about this shit if you just do a few minutes of googling.

That's good to know. How well DO they work with capture cards, though?

I trust /vr/ more than most random sites and forums full of casual shitters.

It's pointless to double a signal that is going into a capture card. You could have just as easily recorded at the real resolution.

With a capture card it's less a matter of scaling and more a matter of modern cards not having inputs for retro consoles.

Your best quality result is to use an older capture device in that situation, but you should be able to get away with recording the doubled signal.

They reduce delay by a good margin. Your TV's upscaler is slower than OSSC/Meister. Also if you're a recordingfag, older capture cards with analog inputs are starting to lose support so these help a lot. My elgato with analog ins no longer works after they dropped support.

Bullshit. Old capture cards do a terrible job compared to an HDMI capture card and an OSSC. The only decent capture cards for 15 kHz RGB are the Datapath cards, and the OSSC is massively easier to deal with than those things are.

was curious about this myself, here are some snaps from my 32 inch 720p LCD tv displaying component cable from the Wii playing a Gamecube game VS plugging the same cable into a OSSC.

as it is the OSSC softens the image too much and detail is lost, I just use the default settings so perhaps with some tweaking a more correct image could be produced.

Turn off the low-pass filter.

That's not losing detail, it's just not creating false detail by oversharpening.

Are you serious? The thing about capturing your game play is that latency doesn't matter so you can do everything with software like DScaler. Just tell it that you're going to be feeding it a 240p signal and you want an output that's the specific resolution of the game you're playing (or an evenly padded 4:3 resolution if that's what you want to use) and you can use whatever period capture device you want. Upscale it later and I'm sure you can make it prettier with Handbrake or something than the OSSC can do. Even if you're trying to stream it and make it l good in sure you can make it damn near pixel perfect just by using Dscaler then being mindful of how you frame it up in your stream to keep things integer scaled.

The filter will be used on the bottom of your screen.
