How do you feel about wireless controllers for retro consoles?

>> No.6284939

I have some third party wireless controllers for SNES I've had since I was a kid, but I didn't use them too often because, besides the ergonomics not being as good as the original pads, there was a noticeable lag.
Still comfy, though.

While I admit that N64 controller cords are way too short, anything that adds even a tiny bit of lag isn't worth it in my books. I just bring the console closer to me or sit closer to the TV. Not so much of a problem with CRTs as opposed to huge flat screens where you're expected to sit 10 feet away.

>> No.6284983

I'm a firm non-believer in wireless controllers, from experience anything before gen 7's official wireless controllers was nothing but just imput lag and leaking batteries.

If you can name any good wireless controllers I'd be down to try them.

>>6284983
you are right for the most part.
gamecube wavebird's is the only good non-modern wireless controller I've tried.
batteries last for ages and there is no noticeable lag. there is a frame (1) of lag afaik, but a frame is nothing for normal usage.
the only downside would be no rumble, if you care enough about it. that is part of why the batteries last so long.

and for what I've read the ps2 katana wireless controller is as good as the wavebird in responsiveness, but haven't tried it to say for sure.

>>6284983
That's just because you don't have much experience with them. Many old IR controllers had no lag or a few microseconds. They had plenty of other problems but lag wasn't one of them.

Probably, though the swtich could also be for a memory card combo mod.

Gonna get a Wii for the first time, gonna use it to play GC games as well.
Am I better off getting a Wavebird wireless GC controller or some GC controller extension cords? I don't have experience with either.

>> No.6285735

>>6285723
Wavebird is fine, but placing the reciever might be awkward if you've got it sitting in an entertainment console or shelves or whatever.

Does the receiver plug into the GC controller port and hand down or something?

Up, sideways, depends on how you have the Wii sitting. IIRC you might have to pop off the guard to get it on there in the first place.

Maybe I'll just go with extension cables.

Well the housing is being used to hold the battery and the other shit. The motor, etc has been removed so it doesn't function as a rumble pak

>>6285690
It could be. But it's not. It's a switch to let you select one of the two channels the mod supports. On a console with 4 built in controller ports. I don't even want to count how many things are retarded about that mod.

When did we go from wireless infrared controllers to those that used radio signals of some sort? Was it at the tail end of the 16-bit era?

This.
I really don't understand why so many people make such shit. It's really not that hard to do better. Pic related is my N64 wireless receiver. It uses the same wireless module as OPs pic and the same line MCU, just a lot smaller. It has automatic channel selection and behind the white cap is an RGB LED that indicates the channel used by color. The controllers use 3rd party shells where the logo part has been milled out and replaced with a similar white insert and RGB LED that matches the port it's synced with, flashes to indicate low battery/syncing. It has enough battery power to last several days and a built in USB charger. All that's in the controller leaving the pak slot intact and functional. It took me less than a day to design, code, print, test and assemble 4 of these.

Im seriously considering buying this:

https://shop.8bitdo.com/products/retro-receiver-for-snes

and trying it with this:

https://store.nintendo.com/super-nintendo-entertainment-system-controller.html

I think it will work. I would be glorious.

I use retrobit's Saturn and MD/Genesis bluetooth controllers and I've had no issues so I'll be getting 8bitdo and retrobit's wireless controllers for other consoles too. In all fairness though I don't tend to play fast-paced games where input lag would be a noticable issue. When it comes to fast-paced games like smups and fighting games I would use a wired arcade stick anyway though so I'm not sure when I'd ever prefer to use a standard wired controller.

I still keep some original controllers around though just in case guests prefer it or if the wireless controllers run out of charge whilst I'm playing.

You're almost always better off cabled to your console. Lag, interference, batteries, ect. I'd rather buy extension cables upon extension cables than go wireless. Not like I'm moving very far from my console anyway.
