I feel the opposite, SMB3 has great level design and aesthetics, but the gameplay in Mario games didn't achieve its peak until SMW.

It's great, I love it, but 2D feels better. It feels great for a 3D game, but 2D feels better even to this day.

Most of it is shovelware hipster garbage, but some stuff like Blasphemous really shines through. No 3D game feels as good as the better 2D platformers. I grew up playing 2D, but I've never hated 3D or 3D games.

What? SMW recycles the same melody over and over while SMB3 has six distinct stage tunes: underground, fortress, airship, underwater, and two overworld themes. Not until Yoshi's Island would Koji Kondo compose such a robust soundtrack for a Mario game.

I voted SMB3. I would take 64 next over World for the novelty (and advancement) to 3D.

I feel that Super Mario World should be the best of the 2D platformers, but it doesn't hold up with me. The added features don't really push the skill and learning curve even when they're at their limit in the Star Road final stretch. Am I a faggot for wanting things utilitarian, when SMB3 introduced a flight mechanic with easy mastery and levels that challenged timing and navigation before SMW? Yeah, probably. The subjectivity lies in your preference for the feather or the leaf and how they feel to control.

I'll be more of a faggot and contrarian to say that Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP / Lost Levels) is underrated in the reason above of truly challenging players to their limit, within the coding limitations and feel of Super Mario Bros. But I acknowledge I'm wrong when such features as the purposeful warp pipes punishing you back to world sets is dumb. What I really like about the game is the idea that every trajectory of your move and jump within the levels is set up to fuck you over. That's funny to me, and in the end, it's still a wholesome and cute Mario game I like to imagine and daydream about.

Interested to hear your guys' thoughts about this. I never read any meaningful Mario level design and game-making discourse.

This. SMB2 was extremely challenging, but also extremely fun. I used to race this game with a friend for the sake of it, and it was a great time. Oh, and best /vr/ mario is 64

>the tracks still sound extremely distinct from each other and to claim otherwise is being dishonest
No shit, Sherlock. But anyone with a damn ear can hear that they're hearing the same melody every time. SMB3's score took effort and it's a verifiable fact that Kondo spent more time composing it than he did SMW. He's on record saying that composing a new overworld theme was a daunting task, but he fucking did it and made two of them. Whereas SMW's soundtrack took the easy route in every single way.

>> No.6287660

Legit question to everyone here; did Mario become popular because of the enemy designs? I'm having a feeling the real reason it did gangbusters was because it was bizzare; since no one saw an Italian plumber jumping on fucking turtles and small dick heads. What I'm saying is, would the series be as popular with regular mooks/humans to jump on rather than turtles? I think it's turtles that made Mario successful
