What is the objectively best gamepad for retro gaming?

If by retro gaming you mean emulation, then the one you've posted or DS4 (I'm slightly more towards the symmetrical design, I own both and prefer DS4 but they perform similarly). Unless there is some third party adapter which allows to use XBone/DS4 controller with retro consoles.

Also Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is not bad, but feels more like a toy compared to DS4 and XBone pads.

You are right, but only for PC games (DOS and early Windows, some of newer Windows games, especially platformers are better with gamepads - try Claw for example).

>> No.6280789

>>6280743
I prefer the DS4 for retro because the D-Pad is in the upper position, which is more natural for games that use it and more authentic to the layout of the SNES and PS1 controllers. The XBone controller is pretty good too, though. As long as you're not using the awful X360 D-Pad, you're good.

>>6280758
No analog inputs.

>> No.6280795

There's no objectively best gamepad because some people have different preferences when it comes to the d-pad, the layout or even how the face buttons feel when pressed. However, these are the ones I would put above others:

-Xbox One/DS4 are good all rounders with fairly precise d-pads, although really only good with cardinal directions (xbone one is clicky, which can be good or bad depending on your preference, I like it that way)

-The 8bitdo M30 is a very basic mix between the sega genesis and the saturn model 2, works pretty good specially with fighting games and shoot em ups

-The original SNES pad I found to be specially good for 2D platformers

I've been using one of these for the longest time and it hasn't failed me (too hard) yet. At least 5 years of use and it's still very much usable. The switch on the back making it compatible with pretty much every game you throw at it is super neat as well.

I liked that controller as a budget option, but I really wish there was a higher quality version of it. The triggers felt stiff and accidently dropping it completely caused my RT to go lose and break.

Yeah my only real complaint about it is that the back triggers aren't molded very well and it digs into your finger when you press it for a long time. But aside from that it's a fantastic controller that I bought for literally 15 bucks.

Name me a good 6 button controller. 4 button consoles are piss easy to find a controller with but that's just because that's the standard that survived. The second you wanna play some genesis or n64 games you have to do stupid nonsense to fit the control layout onto your 360 controller.

Nah, brah. You just don't understand. You have to have one and only one controller. You have to use it for everything. And it has to have every button, stick, pad, etc you might possibly need all taking up space in getting int he way. If you play PC games it has to have a mouse and keyboard as well.

I don't think there's one that will optimally cover all types of games. For most games it's going to be whatever is most comfortable for your hands, but for old fighting games you'll want an excellent d-pad with 3 button x 2 rows layout and non-'handlebar' ergonomics (I use a saturn pad replica).

I am curious to know if any of you conoisseurs have found one with an especially great d-pad?

Man that sucks. I love my SNES pad for most 2D games (except fighting games) more than anything else, but the lack of controls for a bit more modern games (even PS1) and the absurdly long cable ain't that pleasant. Wish I had the skill to mod it.

it averaged 4-6 hours which is fucking pathetic since it has a 1000mah battery.
The switch joycons have 525mah batteries and last 20 hours each.
The XBO and Switch pro controllers last 30 and 40 hours.
And the steam controller lasts 80 hours.

It's fucking ridiculous that you have to live in a world where you charge your controller after every session instead of just every few weeks.
And you think that's normal.
And you bought a charge dock, which is probably why Sony made the battery life shit in the first place.

Because microswitches are basically the most expensive option for a controller's imput. You save that shit for the heavy-wear arcade machines and high end pro shit. If they put microswitches in like a Switch Joycon they'd probably try selling them for like another 30 extra dollars.
