So in my last job I was helping sell some custom arcade emulators. They worked with retropie and they were awesome desu.

But something has gotten into my head from that, we constantly argue both with coworkers and with the clients regarding the look of the videogames specially in pixel art.

It seems people on their nostalgia either enhance what they think games looked like back then, and what they actually look like. And the fack that CTR had such low resolution sometimes scaled in a blurry manner made matters worse.

So people tend to prefer somewhat they remember (blurry stuff) than the actual look of the sprites (square pixels), at least those who are more casual into the thing.

I personally grew up more with emulators and HQ of the early 2000's so I find the pixels rather fascinating. But needless to say, some types of video smoothing does bring interesting looks, almost like oil paitings.

What do you think /vr/? In what way do you like your emulators to run most of the time? Do you still use CTR with older consoles?

And what do you think of "new retro" modern games that use pixel art as their basis? should they apply some video smoothing or are they better like that?

normal by far, how is this even a question? "smooth" ruins the pixel art

but casual consumers prefer blurry shit, including 2xSaI to avoid "pixelated" looks

9 times out of 10 I prefer it crystal clear with sharp pixels, I like the look. I played on CRTs and stuff as a little kid in the 90s, but I also would emulate a lot of games over time, and as we moved to flat screens, I found the pixelated look would grow on me a lot.

The only good type of smoothing is naturally done by a CRT, and the only good way to play classic console games is on a CRT

Pixel smoothing looks like shit and it'll always be shit. There's no way you can argue that that was an intended look.

If you're going to filter sprites you should at least be using a composite or rbg filter or something.

That is actually true to some degree

Not all inteded look was just a simpler blur effect (caused by the resolution)

Ignoring scanlines alone, there is a indirect anti aliasing that happened due to the strange ways CTR and other old TVs worked.

So sometimes the intended look was more akin to this>>6281102

but of course, we nerds post 90's are spoiled by HQ emulators that directly scaled the pixels 1:1

It's not really strange it's just what their interest is. They want to experience the most authentic recreation of the time period as possible, for some out of nostalgia or others because they didn't experience it first hand and want to. Others of us just have different preferences. I don't want an authentic experience, I want what the kid me imagined the games could look like. Or sometimes I'll slap one of those crazy paint filters on just to make an old game look different for another replay. Diff'rent Strokes, yo.

I used to be all about filters and smoothing, but over the years I came to hate them. I just saw too many instances of details being altered in ways no artist ever would, and I slowly accepted the fact that no filter can ever enhance detail, only destroy it.

Smoothing only looks good in Metal Slug because the sprites are so masterfully done. For that same reasoning the non-smoothed version is still better.
If you start with a better baseline than other games then of course the filters are going to be better than other games too.

I like the ScaleFX filter the best. It seems pretty smart about the pixels it adds, without antialising too much, so you don't end up with a lot of 45 degree triangle edges.

Bilinear filter is still the best, maybe some scanlines if darker colors look better.
Anyone saying that the developers intended for X or Y on their graphics is full of shit, CRTs are radically different from one another and even on two of the same lines their settings can easily make a big difference.
Just be glad you are playing on an emulator were you can improve the graphics to your liking.
