What's the best way to play this now? PS1, HD "remaster," or wait on the fan translation of the Saturn version?

>> No.6281080

>>6281070
The remaster was patched in November which fixed the sprites and looped audio and doesn't suffer from slowdown like the PS1 version.

>> No.6281083

Probably the latter, I guess? The PS1 version has bugged textures everywhere and the pc version is based off that and didn't fix it, plus it applied a horrible filter on the game.

The Saturn version looks amazing compared to the others. It will be worth waiting for. Took me forever to finish the PS1 version because whenever I moved the camera the horrible textures literaly gave me motion sickness. Play the Dreamcast version of the sequel while you wait (DON'T play the PS2 version whatever you do) its a great game and isn't tied to the story of the first.

Wasn't the Saturn struggling with 3D environments? But maybe that point is moot since most of the game is made of sprites, which the PS1 can't handle well.

No, the fix is they added the smoothing filter to the few sprites that didn't have the filter applied.

The Saturn had one ace up it's sleeve with VDP2. It could provide 2 rotating infinite planes which Grandia uses extensively. The base floor layer in most maps is using one of those planes on the Saturn, and that's the part that usually took a hit on PS1.

I didn't remember the PS version having such low res backgrounds. I'm watching that whole port comparison video and it's pretty obvious now. What the fuck?

>> No.6282559

>>6282534

It's a case of the Saturn's VRAM being used more effectively. PS1 has 1MB of Unified VRAM. This is used for everything including the frame buffer. Saturn on the other hand has it's VRAM broken down like this:

VDP1 (Sprites/Polygons): 512KB
VDP1 Frame buffers: 2x 256KB
VDP2 (Backgorunds): 512KB

So that ends up with 1.5MB of VRAM total if we include the frame buffers.

When porting 3D PS1 games to Saturn you usually hit an issue of not enough VRAM since VDP1 is going to be doing most of the work and VDP2 goes mostly unused. However since Grandia was made for the Saturn it uses VDP1 and VDP2 extensively. So in porting that to PS1 they hit VRAM limits and something had to get downgraded. They went for the backgrounds.

I noticed in the last 24 hours there was a new patch release for Disc 1. The filename says "v0.8.0", so I guess it is very close to being finished? I wonder if the translation port is far along now to give the first disc a play through or if I should wait.

>> No.6284275

>>6283618
What remains to be done so far is this:

Disc 1:
General polish and cleaning up (Fixing alignment of certain menu items, battle text, etc.)
Add text for voice only sequences (These are few on Disc 1).
Possibly uncensor the script (Replace Coffee references with original Alcohol references.)
Add Subtitles to FMVs.

Disc 2:
Synchronize voices with Text
Same General polish as Disc 1 plus figure out how to get Guido's full name tiles to fit in the battle results screen file.
Add text to voice only sequences (There's a few more of these in disc 2 and they are rather important to the plot.)
Possibly Uncensor the script (not sure if this is as big of an issue on Disc 2)
Add Subtitles to FMVs.

The big issue is adding subtitles to the FMVs. Grandia doesn't use any of the typical Saturn FMV codecs. It's an entirely custom codec.

Are you involved with Saturn translation? Can you overlay subtitles on the FMVs, like subtitles on a DVD (or soft subtitles in a MKV file, etc.)? Or do the subtitles have to be hard encoded into the video? Has there been any headway with figuring out the codec?

I'm the one doing the bulk of the work on the translation. As for just overlaying subtitles you'd need to reprogram the games FMV playback code to draw text where it originally wasn't doing it before. So that probably would be more difficult. If the codec can be figured out doing hard subs would be the easiest route most likely.

As for figuring out the codec, not much progress has been made sadly. We know the audio is ADX and the video isn't Cinepak, Truemotion, etc. It looks almost MPEG or M-JPEG like, but it's definitely not MPEG Sofdec.

Would it be easier to somehow make an audio track from the English version on the PS1 version that is synced to the Saturn video, then mux it together?

There are various video editing and mixing tools that would allow you to mux in and replace the audio track without altering the video codec or container.

I wonder how they fucked up the textures so badly.

>> No.6289606

>>6289323
The audio is ADX, but to properly mux it you'd need to reverse engineer the file format anyways. So you may as well figure out the video format while your at it. Plus it would be really jarring to have it swap back and forth from Japanese to English.

>>6289429
The floors aren't really textures, they're VDP2 planes. So it's not really using polygons to draw it. Think SNES Mode 7 on steroids. The whole floor is one big bitmap of the ground with roads, shadows, etc. all baked into it.

Again when going to PS1 they now had to deal with less VRAM, and they had to draw the floors with polygons. So those giant bitmaps of the floors became small repeating textures.

The "fan translation" simply ported the PS1 script mostly unchanged, except for system menus exclusive to the Saturn they translated. Of course it's going to be identical.
