The vast majority of us will be fine, and if people act like it's no big deal(i'm not staying home, i'm not going to wash my hands more, let's have a gathering of 1 person less than the limit lmao) it's going to kill .1% more people which is thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions, who knows.

It's a pandemic. It has happened before, and will likely happen in the future too.
Unlike the past, we have better science now. People are dying, it's dangerous, but it's not the end.
It's quite shocking for us, people who never lived a war (assumign you aren't from a country that actually had war in recent times).
China is already recovering, and there's many different countries developing the vaccine or the cure. People will keep dying, but people also die of car accidents everyday. Welcome to life, it's a scary place. Now with extra flavor.

half-happening. maybe quarter-happening.
A lot of people are going to die. Mostly elderly. There's going to be economic problems for most of the world as supply lines are interrupted.
But it will pass. Treatments are being tested, and vaccines are being trialed. Covid will be dead in about a year. Statistically, it is all but assured that you and those you love will survive this.
But the stock market is gonna suck for a while. Unemployment will increase. And you will have problems finding some things on store shelves.

>I thought this whole corona thing was being blown out of proportion? Are we really experiencing a habbening?
Neither.
It's extremely dangerous for old people and those with weak immune systems.
Other people are not in danger. They carry the virus, but the illness is very mild if you're otherwise healthy.
The quarantines are because the virus is new for humankind, so we will all fall ill together, which will overwhelm hospitals and far too many people will die unnecessarily (which is happening in Italy right now).
All quarantines achieve is making people fall ill gradually rather than all at once so that everyone can receive treatment.
At the moment in Italy doctors literally decide who lives and who dies because there's not enough equipment. They may disconnect an granny from an artificial respiration machine and let her suffocate right in front of it so that a younger guy would be able to survive (because the old lady might not survive anyway whereas the guy will definitely survive with proper help).
All doctors want is to "flatten the curve" so that there is never so many people in need of emergency treatment that hospitals are overwhelmed.

>>6280476
You are incorrect.
1. The virus is new, so everyone will fall ill all at once.
2. Healthy people won't die but spread the virus to those who will die.
3. If a hospital can treat 20 emergency patients and they get 18, everyone survives. If they get 50, many will die from a preventable disease.
4. That's why people who are not at risk are asked to engage in social distancing or even quarantined.
For example, in Italy there are sometimes 10x more people in need of help than a particular hospital can accomodate, hence the deaths. The virus can't (and doesn't need to be) be stopped, but it must be slowed down substantially so that hospitals could treat everyone who needs treatment. Hence the quarantine.

People dying from respiratory infections is nothing new. The alarming part is so many dying of respiratory infections at once that hospitals are ovelwhelmed and there are not enough doctors to treat everyone even in the most developed of countries.
And the reason is that sars-cov-2 is completely new for humanity, so (1) nobody is immune yet, which results in zero herd humanity and, therefore, extremely fast spread of infection--incomparably faster than, say, seasonal flu, and (2) the vaccine does not exist yet and will not exist for about a year.
This is why COVID-19 is given so much attention despite being barely more dangerous than the flu.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I think people forget that the flu is actually some SERIOUS shit, and the only reason it doesn't decimate the world is because we have vaccines, modern medical practices, and because we've been lucky enough that all types of flu have been circulating so we have general antibodies to handle them even if we aren't immune to the newest mutation. 1918 Spanish Flu is estimated to have killed 50 million people because of a combination of us not having vaccines and it being a specific type of flu that hadn't been common in several decades (which meant a whole generation of people had no antibodies for it compared to other types of flu). COVID-19 is alarmingly similar, except there are no people immune to it in any age range. Yeah, it's not going to kill most of us, but boy is it going to have a high death toll at the rate things are going.
