Besides, the new games don’t have any modding capability, so after everyone completes the campaign and gets bored of Battlemode then there isn’t much else to talk about besides the mediocre lore

It should be lighter because the engine doesn't have to skip past them when doing various checks for rendering, collision, or generally finding the correct thinker or actor for some action. They won't be running sight or sound checks if they don't exist.

You should learn basic ACS (aka the scripting system that came with Hexen but is integrated to the Doom environment in some multi-iwad ports, and also heavily expanded in the ZDoom family of ports) if you want to experiment with this.

Also, even in the base game actors can be created on the fly. I noticed Chocolate/Crispy has two different -gameversions for Final Doom, and PrBoom only has one -complevel for it; I wonder what the differences are, though it doesn't matter since I will probably never record demos for Final Doom.

Problem is, Dagestan actually had it coming, being a shady Russian company shitting Steam up with hentai 15-puzzles and le ebin maymay navalny simulators, but they also dragged some actual games down with them. I am particularly curious about Dungeons of Kremlin Remastered, which looked not half bad, considering it was a remaster of crappy FPS game from 1995.

Doom 64's Hell executes its direction well with a great atmosphere and level design, but it does suffer from its own limited direction, after the previous games having a more versatile (Even if it looks random) Hell that looked more unique and couldn't be replicated by anyone else besides id themselves.
The fact that the fusion of flesh and metal fits with cybernetic demons makes me wish 64's Hell would take more elements from old school Inferno.
Maybe 64's Hell succeeds on looking more like Hell, but while the classic 1/2 Hell felt more unique (Even if its levels weren't as good), it's the one that had to come from id themselves.
If classic Doom had the aesthetic of 64, i couldn't see people making more maps or mods, when Doom's setting being a weird mix of ideas is something that makes it fun to make content for.
Like, the existence of a lion stone face literally inspired that Realm667 lion Baron enemy.

Just do it like Hideous Destructor where you can carry multiples of one weapon in inventory. You start with a gun and a holster, then you can get one or two additional holsters for loaded guns, you can have more guns than that, but not in a holster ready to draw.
The best upgrade would be to get a brace with which you could carry an additional four loaded pistols.

These are flintlocks, so there'd be a noticeable pause between pulling the trigger and the gun firing, the reliability would also be a bit spotty, sometimes the hammer drops and you get nothing, so you have to cock the hammer and pull the trigger and try again. Blackpowder is dirty, so eventually you have to clean a gun to keep using it, though if you use smaller calibers of bullets you can load those in a dirty gun for a while and keep shooting some, until the gun gets just too dirty and you have no choice but to clean it.

Due to these realities, the mod would actually have to have a reasonable emphasis on melee combat, punching, kicking, flipping your pistol around and using it as a club (which is what people would do) bayonets on muskets, daggers and sabers, spears and pikes, axes.

>Due to these realities, the mod would actually have to have a reasonable emphasis on melee combat
Damn, never thought it from that perspective. I know that melee combat can be fun in Doom, as demonstrated by Action Doom 2, GMOTA and Final Doomer, can the flintlock gameplay be made fun as well? Maybe not go with full blown realism, but make the reload slow enough (and interruptible by damage) so the guns will be used either for picking off distant targets or for a short burst of damage in close combat before switching to melee. It would obviously work better in Heretic and especially Hexen levels, as they focus more on short-range encounters.

>> No.6271234

>>6271215
I mean it depends on what kind of realism you want, I'm not the one making it, I'm just vomiting up ideas based on what I know of the stuff. You would probably also modify the enemies to give at least some of them similar restrictions, and 1700s hats.

The Cyberdemon could be changed so he has like cannon on his arm (the peg leg can probably be borrowed from Pirate Doom), he loads a fistful of blackpowder and then a fistful of grapeshot into it (so he's a little less dependent on having to clean), and then he uses a ripcord to set it off. That way, he can occasionally fire off a giant shotgun salvo at you, though he would have a big sword to use in melee.

Also, a big thing that would have to be implemented is the "Fog Of War", blackpowder guns spit out a lot of smoke, which takes a little while to dissipate, and if a lot of guns fire off in one area, it would start getting hard to see for a while, the enemies should be coded to have to contend with this too.
For a dramatic example, a slaughtermap would quickly be enveloped in fog, which would probably make it unplayable due to all the big transparent sprites lingering and constantly generating throughout the gunbattles, driving GzDoom to a crawl.

Dumb. If you want complete accuracy to the original Prboom+ is probably your best bet if you want modern resolutions. If you want fancy lighting shit fucks with GZDoom. The default settings and options menus of both sourceports are insanely retarded so enjoy that. Turn off texture filtering, make your sector light mode look proper, turn off mouse accel, and turn on always run.

tl;dr it's a massive shotgun with a large rocket projectile that does more damage with it's invisible shotgun blast than the actual blast of it. The shotgun blast goes off during the third frame of the explosion, so it's delayed slightly.
Also RNG in the damage of the ball which is less reliable.

If you do end up using GZDoom, one QOL mod I'd recommend is Precise Crosshair. You SHOULD be playing with no vertical mouse look and have auto aim on, this mod would help you know when your auto aim has actually locked onto an enemy above or below you, so you don't waste ammo or shoot a rocket into the stairs right infront of you.
Not sure if any other sourceports have an option like this.

>Black Mesa styled overhaul
I can't get over how badly they fucked over the revolver in that. The shotgun is also an unreliable piece of shit half the time, partly thanks to everything moving in erratic stop-start patterns making for awkward combat, and the fact that a double barrel meatshot will sometimes gib a soldier, and other times lightly tickle his nuts.
Not to mention how much the camera loves to jostle about under heavy fire from the grunts, so it's impossible to have any degree of accuracy while fighting them with precision weapons.

>>6271572
I like that both him and gmanlives point out the level and encounter design being less restricted or predictable this time around. Seems to be the levels have more in the way of nonlinearity and exploration going on than before. The moment gmanlives compared most of them to Foundry from 2016 I was happy.

Same treatment won't do much for Quake 2's lackluster campain.

Gameplay mods with minor changes:

Smooth Doom/Beautiful Doom - These two mods attempt to improve Doom's visuals.
Dead Marine - Basically Smooth Doom but with changed/added sounds that make the game feel more atmospheric. One of my favourite vanilla-ish mods. (GZ 3.4.1)
Babel - Adds animation cancelling. Also has an optional monster pack. (GZ 3.4.1)

Other cool shit:

Sound Caulking - Adds and changes sounds to make monsters (and the pistol) more distinguishable. I prefer the version with PSX sounds.
Autoautosave - Saves for you under certain conditions, such as picking up a key.
Brightmaps Plus - Improves GZDoom's Brightmaps (how shit glows in the dark). Has a compatible version with Doom 2 Minor Sprite Fixing Project.
Doom 2 Minor Sprite Fixing Project - Basically fixes some odd sprite issues like medic packs being off centre, zombiemen missing a rotation and the Revanant's infamous floating pixel.
Sprite Shadows - Adds shadows to sprites. Get this from one of the megas.
Health Warning - Adds the Doom 2016 low health notification to Doom. Get this from one of the megas.

Most importantly, don't force yourself to play if you don't like it. They'res plently of other shit you can play such as Duke Nukem 3d, Blood and Quake 1 (Arcane Dimensions).

The key to beating it on Nightmare is having your routes completely memorized. I couldn't find any guides on youtube so I learned the routes myself. I watched UV/NM speedruns to see the fastest routes to the level exit and compared the two categories to see any differences in the routes, then I watched NM-100% secrets speedruns to see where all the secrets are, I visited each secret in-game to determine if it was worth hitting up during an attempt at a single-segment demo, I created my own route, which admittedly is the same as most routes but I go to all the major secrets like mega-armor and soulsphere etc., then went to grinding. Episode 3 is the easiest because of all of the invulnerability spheres and you get the BFG, episode 1 is the hardest because of all of the fucking hit-scanners and pinkies and spectres. Episodes 1 and 2 I did fairly quickly, but episode 1 took like 50 hours for my first completion. Even this Chocolate Doom demo took maybe 5 hours to get. Hopefully my videos can serve as a guide to other people. I intentionally visit every important secret area, even if I am full on health/armor/ammo, just so that I include it in my demo.

My re-upload is almost done, should be up in 15 min I think

Just finished Eviternity (I was the one commenting and nitpicking last thread) I have to admit, despite my complaints as i got further in, that final 'heaven' map set between maps 26-30 was a very strong finish. map29 was one of the coolest maps i've ever played with the very long music track, the flying between islands, drops into caverns and the 'back where it all began' moment at the end of it. The final boss was more interesting than i was expecting too. Good stuff. Next on my list is Lost Civ.

Is it just me or do some WAD makers at times forget how to properly use the enemies. I know this entirely depends on the preferences of the person playing (or the person making it) But when demons like Revenants, Mancubi, Hell Knights, or Barons are released in swarms its not only tedious, but it misses the point of these demons in the first place. They're meant to be target priorities with maybe 2-5 of them among swarms of smaller cannon fodder, giving you something to focus on or be aware of as a larger threat that you either need to shoot first or fight your way to in order to remove them from the situation before they can hit you with their more dangerous attacks. Or they can be a solo or duo encounter stepping around a corner that forces you to back off and find a vantage point. I've played several WADs now that love to SUDDENLY TWENTY REVENANTS me and its really starting to get frustrating. Having to circle strafe a crowd of enemies that take several more shots to kill every encounter wears on me quickly. I know some people are into that style of play, but... i dunno seems detached from the ways Doom 1 and 2 were designed. (Well, it happens here and there in 2 as well i guess.)

This is the problem with a lot of cool looking WADS, they make the maps first and then add enemies later. It's easy to tell when a map maker has just been laying down a fuckton of enemies with little care or actually been trying to arrange enemies into fun combat scenarios.

Dead.air walks that line between the two, but it seems to use its hordes to force you around the map and I liked that a lot. The amount of activity made it feel like a living, breathing place that was coming down on you, even if it got slaughterwad-y.

I actually do like those scenarios. I think its actually pretty clever design if a horde is used to signal "get the fuck out' or is meant to direct you down a certain path. the players current weapon loadout has to be planned for that as well. Someone with a bfg and full cells will inevitably try to fight back. But if a bunch of shit just spawns directly in your way or theres a door that wont open until you kill the murder mob that just spawned in then ehhhhh...

Enemy placement felt planned out and meant to get the player to react or panic into quickly taking on priority targets, backing off, or rushing through openings to get to a more advantageous position. Go with what you're comfortable with, really, though mind that there's some shootable switches, as well as Doom 2's Map 30, which you're only supposed to be able to hit at the appropriate height, and freelook will let you bypass a lot of that, breaking sequence and trivializing some segments.
You're also not supposed to be able to jump or crouch, so bypassing obstacles that way will probably break or trivialize a map somehow.

Again, go with what you think would feel the best, play with a gamepad if you want even.

Mouselook. Even in 1993 DOOM supported mouselook and the in-game demos were recorded with mouselook. If you really want vertical looking you can I guess but it's not needed in my opinion. It won't hurt as long as you keep auto-aim on for hitscan.

Are you specifically trying to load Doom through Steam to keep track of your play time? Because if so I can't help ya.

Otherwise, put doom.wad and doom2.wad in your Chocolate Doom folder, and click and drag which one you want to play onto chocolate-doom.exe

If you haven't already, I'd recommend using Crispy Doom, it's made from Chocolate Doom and comes with a bunch of cool options no other source port has. You need to learn to use command lines if you want to run mods with it though, like:
Vanilla Smooth Weapons
PerK Hi-Res SFX
Doom Minor Sprite Fixing Project (remember to also load the dehacked file)
Put those three mods in your Crispy Doom folder along with doom.wad, create a new text document, name it Doom 1993 or whatever, change it from a .txt file to a .bat file, edit the file, and type this:
>crispy-doom -iwad doom.wad -file d1spfx19.wad vsmooth.wad pk_doom_sfx_20120224.wad -deh D1DEHFIX.DEH

>what kind of options or features does crispy add over chocolate
Too many for me to list. Chocolate Doom is designed to be as close to the original Doom as possible, so it has virtually 0 extra options. Chocolate Doom runs in 320x200 resolution. Crispy Doom is, again, made from Chocolate Doom so it can run in 320x200 resolution, or 640x400 resolution - it looks "crisp" in this resolution, hence the name. Crispy also lets you choose between the original 4:3 aspect ratio, or widescreen resolution.

Just download it, it takes no time at all. Use this link:
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Download. I go here to download the latest version because I dunno how to navigate github, its a mess.

Move doom.wad and doom2.wad into your Crispy Doom folder.

I recommend organizing your folder like I did in pic related, so that you do not need to copy the same files over and over in each source port folder (the highlighted folders). So for example, my Crispy Doom command line for Doom1 looks like:
>crispydoom\crispy-doom -iwad iwads\doom.wad -file mods\spritefix\d1spfx19.wad mods\vsmooth\vsmooth.wad mods\pk_doom_sfx_20120224.wad -deh mods\spritefix\D1DEHFIX.DEH

>> No.6273290

>>6273262
One more thing - if you just keep all your files inside of your crispy doom you don't have to worry about this, but, then you have to copy all your mods/wads into each source port folder you use.

Anyway, whatever folder you launch crispy-doom from will create a crispy-doom.cfg file, see pic related. This means that if you change settings using crispy-doom-setup inside of your crispy doom folder, they will not apply when launching from outside of your crispy doom folder. So, create a .bat file to launch crispy-doom from C:\Games\Doom instead of C:\Games\Doom\Crispy-Doom; create a new text document, save it as setup.bat, and inside, type:
>crispy-doom\crispy-doom-setup

In an Eternal cutscene, Doomguy speaksand he sounds very similar to BJ Blazkowicz

I don't know how to feel about this, because on one hand he legitimately recites lines from the comic like "huge guts" and of course "rip and tear," which is very on the nose and will feel winceworthy and played out to anyone who's had to listen to the fans recite these lines for years but one the other hand his voice isn't too outrageous when he delivers the lines, if anything, he sounds as lost and depressed as his Quake 3 chatlines make him out to be, which I feel is much better than Brutal's GO FUCK YOURSELF shit
All of this happens in a flashback anyway, it's not like he says these during gameplay

on an unrelated note, you should buy a hazmat suit and walk around in public to spook people

Just realised I forgot about Vanilla Essence, which basically is a quick configuration for settings similar to vanilla Doom. I'd suggest enabling movement interpolation in the settings, unless you like playing at 35 fps.

Anyway, software rendering does arguably improve visuals on vanilla-centric maps, especially in regards to texture repetition, as it dithers visuals and automatically re-shades based on camera distance (can't remember the technique name for it). It also makes spectres harder to spot like the original game as well.

Arguably the biggest problem with software rendering is the viewpoint heavily distorts when not looking centred. If you're playing with no freelook this isn't a problem, but you can get used to it after some time.

Anyway, GZDoom does have software rendering and the quickest way to set that shit up is by using Vanilla Essence. It's been a while since I've used it but I believe LZDoom can use Vanilla Essence as well, as it's based on GZDoom (LZ version 3.8.5 = GZ 3.8.5 but using a more compatible renderer.

doomguy was originally going to have story and character as well as having a squad of other characters he would interact with, but this was all dropped pretty early on.

I have tried to move the content of the Vanilla Essence folder into the GZDoom folder but it doesn't seems to change anything about the options menu?

I'm new to DOOM and old FPS games in general. How can I play Doom 2 online multiplayer?

It's not that it's hard or anything. It's just that it legit shit the shit out of me when I was playing Chocolate. At least he's not so much of a dick, he doesn't hand out light amplification visors like candy.
