Nothing 'went wrong', it's merely a product of its time and the technical limitations of that period. Yeah the gameplay is repetitive and the level design is labyrinthine, but there was no groundwork laid prior to development to indicate what worked and what didn't for the genre. Wolf 3D is still enjoyable in short bursts of play, but becomes tiresome after a while.

What? They're fine. New Colossus confused a lot of people by being too subtle with its enormous tie-in to the whole Metal Gear conspiracy thing maybe. But I'm sure it holds up on its own merits as long as you're switched-on enough to dig into its own plot even a little.

What went wrong? I'll tell you what went wrong.

B.J. Blazkowicz got captured by the Nazis and got thrown into a dark dungeon. That's what went wrong.

Luckily he managed to kill a Nazi guard and start his escape. He's a tough guy. He can make it.

>> No.6263873

I would kinda love if they went back to basics.
Bust out of a cell, steal a uniform and solid snake around the place like the original concept. Nothing but a single big castle, like the first Arkham Asylum game or whatever. But more dogfood-eating and shanking innocent german farmboys with sharpened spoons.
Maybe a crazy nazi zombie lab in the basement. But you know what? not mandatory.

Wolfenstein 3D does have some appeal, it wouldn't be a hit if it wasn't somehow enjoyable.
Doom came out just a year later and made it look incredibly plain and barebones in comparison, but there's something about the simplistic pseudo-arcade gameplay cartoony graphics which are just very appealing.
My suggested way of playing is to do like one level a day, that way you'll not tire yourself out doing multiple of the more long winding ones.

If you're all new to oldschool shooters, and Wolfenstein 3D is amazing to you, you should check out not just Doom, Quake, Half-Life, and Duke Nukem 3D, games considered immortal classics, but you should also check out Rise Of The Triad, because it's as if Wolfenstein 3D lost its goddamn mind, and it's amazing.

>Doom came out just a year later and made it look incredibly plain and barebones in comparison
That makes sense, I kinda guessed that's more what he meant.
But still, barebones and simple doesn't exactly mean bad, yeah.
Something about it's simplistic but solid maze crawling and resource management really catches my interest.

>you should check out not just Doom, Quake, Half-Life, and Duke Nukem 3D
Already played Half-life, but yup, i'm planning on playing all of them too.
>but you should also check out Rise Of The Triad, because it's as if Wolfenstein 3D lost its goddamn mind, and it's amazing.

Wolfenstein 3D: Let's make a game set in an interesting setting that just happens to have Nazis. No cut scenes. Pure game play.
NuWolfenstein: Let's make a vehicle for leftist propaganda, using Nazis as an allegory for our deranged idea of an Orange-Man-Bad world. And anyone who doesn't like this is a real life Nazi. Sprinkle in leftist memes such as LGBTQ, "diversity", and feminism. Make sure the focus is on the story and cinematics with game play as an after thought.

this. Wolfenstein feels rudimentary, but it has its strengths.
another favorite old school shooter of mine is Pathways into Darkness. it too is rudimentary, but it has amazing atmosphere, and the way it weaves in storytelling/puzzle-solving was very well done.

They're hiding around almost every corner, shoot instantly on sight, and can 3 shot in you a second if you can't react fast enough.
They can't even be hit stunned fast enough with the pistol to not take damage.

Can I play the old Doom and Wolfenstein titles with vertical mouse movement too? Is such a feature included in Steam or GOG re-releases of these games or do I need to install some mods?

Wolfenstein 3D on steam has vertical mouse movement on by default actually, and swapping out DOSbox for ECWolf gives you more options to customize your controls
Can't speak for any other titles, but if Wolf3D has it, i'd imagine the rest and the Doom games have it too.

And yeah, he's right, the new Wolfenstien game really is so despicably Western and prog that in many ways, I am glad it exposed people to just how fucked up and juvenile the premise of this game is when you take it seriously or try to make a serious point out of it.

I'm not gonna debate it with people who couldn't figure this out themselves, but the plot of New Colossus was a total trojan horse and not on the simplistic way idiots itt have characterized it.

The game is about brainwashing (you're meant to figure this out on your own) and all the woke shit was misdirection.

compared to Doom, Wolf didn't have a solid formula that was iconic in the original going forward like Dooms moshpit-combat with the distinctive enemy types, weapons and level structure. Wolf always experimented between stealthy combat going back and forth between more action and more stealth/exploration.

Id should have ironed out RtcW more and stuck with that gameplay, while New Blood was excellent it went from that to a Farcry clone and now to idk wtf it is.
