Super Mario Bros. 2 was a nightmare. It was way too hard. So Nintendo decided to take another game, "Doki-Doki Panic" and just update it with familiar characters, including Toad, Princess, Mario, and Luigi, giving them each the various roles that they would have had as characters in the original game.

It worked like a goddamn charm, though, because suddenly the entire American audience who was awaiting the next iteration of Super Mario Bros. had this whole new weird game with throwing stuff and entering into sub-space, and that was all it took to make them curious as to what this weird game was all about.
