I'm shocked and guilty of doing this myself, but many "top jrpg" lists fail to include pokemon games. It's a real tragedy because these are some of the most lovingly crafted and immersive role playing games we have.

I don't wanna hate on Pokemon but I can definitely see why, I think Pokemon has kinda been a little over saturated in the market. That's a ton of relatively disappointing or lack luster games that populate the series. Leaf Green is one of my favorite games though.

I mean the puzzles were nice, but they weren't too diffcult to figure out.

The thing was, the characters themselves were bland and weren't compelling whatsoever. Maybe it was the translation, but they just felt as flat as wooden boards.

lemuria was a complete let down, it was blown up to be some grandiose city, when it turn out to be a couple of houses, there were towns in the first game larger than that shit.

None of them. They're all massive time sinks whose stories can be summed up by a wiki article. Everything you think you like about JRPGS boils down to the exact same formula that's been used since the mid 80's. Nothing has changed except technology and the desire to make "hey kids lets get a group of folks together and kill God" more cinematic and tedious.

Not retro but I'd say Dragon Quest VIII.
It has it all down to absolute perfection

The best RPG I would have to say was" Arc the LAD (1+2+Arena)

(1+2+Arena were supposed to be one game, but there were deadlines

The only reason it isn't number one in the states is because it got embargoed until 02', but it was too late by that point because the PS2 cycle started (despite the comparability)
