It's a pseudo-walking sim. If you're going into it expecting something like Baldur's Gate, or Fallout, or Icewind Dale, or Arcanum, you'll be disappointed. If you go into it exclusively for the story, you'll probably enjoy it.

For a video game, it has above average writing. The characters are fairly fleshed out and in many instances aren't disjointed from the overarching storyline, so imagine a polar opposite of a setpiece shooter like Icewind Dale 2.

That said, having a hilarious side-kick as a character and an amnesia isn't particularly high-brow. A bunch of verbose lore dump doesn't outweigh that by much, and the gameplay sure is godawful for an IE game.

The combat's not bad at all. It's a little boring, but there's not too much of it and it's serviceable, just too east. All the high level spells are fun to use. It's not as good as Baldur's Gate, sure, but it's better than 99% of the jrpg's these faggots play anyway.

If you approach it as a VN, it's great.
If you treat it as anything else, it's a borefest.
And it's not even about the amount of reading (have any of you played any game that have been released in past 15 years?), but the fact how boring the game by itself is.

Might as well ask here instead of making a new thread.

I'd like to play classic rpgs, the ones I'm at least initially interested in are fallout 1 and 2, baldur gates 1 and 2 and planescape torment. I have not really played western rpgs, have never played a fallout game and the closest to dungeons and dragons I have played was one session of the 5th edition of the game.

What I'd like to ask is what would be a good order to play the games, especifically which one should I play first to get "initiated" and enjoy the most of it.
I was thinking of playing planescape torment first, is that a good choice or should I play something else first?

>> No.6258989

>>6258718
Who gives a shit, go with what appeals to you the most
There is no good orderz you can play them all, you can drop some of them after 10 minutes and come back to it months or years later and find then great, you can start the list and get stuck playing one of them several times and modding it because you find it amazing
Playing games, or getting into any piece of art or entertainment only to check them off a list is pretty dumb. Just play them and enjoy them or not for what they are

A great story, If you liked Disco Elysium you would love it
I would say another contender would be Nwn2 expansion Mask of the Betrayer. Imho an underrated game, it has a very interesting story and companions.
Funny how Obsidian had some failings while developing nwn2 so the main campaign is meh tier, but they more leeway and ''meh do whatever you wish'' attitude from the funders so they went wild and made the best rpg game of 2000s (yeah fite me).

I got it in a Humble Bundle awhile ago, and I didn't realize it was a digital book at the time, and put it down.

Planescape is better than most published books of the last 50 years. Probably better than 99% of it.
Most authors go through collegiate programs, like the MFA, and become stale hacks who turn their noses up at genre fiction and limit their talent. It also indoctrinates them into a very stale, subjectivist, and postmodern worldview in regards to morals and human nature, whereas the greats like Homer, John Milton, or Dante had a very transcendentally deep view of things.
Some genuinely talented writers have filtered out of this and gone elsewhere, like video games.

It's different in a way that prevents you from using any hotkeys for spells and other things, and instead you have to use that abysmal UI with the mouse. You are also vastly limited with classes to choose from, and the spells are underwhelming.

I haven't really finished this game so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I didn't found the game to be THAT interesting or good, it's not bad, but the gameplay in general was really boring.
The "roleplaying" also felt pretty forced, it's like they really didn't want to have it in their game, but had to because it's a wrpg, they should have just made a VN.

It's not a bad game at all, specially if you play it on it's own terms, but it's really not the masterpiece a lot of people say it is.

If you are gonna play Planetscape anyway, don't make same mistake as me and don't go into STR build, particulary max STR build. It may make few fights at the beginning bit easier, but the whole game is actually reading/clicking thru a story and low INT and CHA has rly few and shit options.

You wish, but that's how dumb you come off when you cream yourself over how supposedly good this game is. You step into actual philosophy territory, authors like Sartre, Kant, and so on, and you start looking like a clown.

It's a game with a decent story, but nothing else. Shit-tier gameplay makes it less fun than the other Inf Engine games that have less tryhard writing, but more engaging gameplay.

>> No.6264636

Now this is a game that could stand to be remade.

It looks ugly, it badly needs editing, its battle system needs improving, and its battle animations need replacing (with shorter ones). But it's pretty good at heart. If it weren't coated in several thick layers of crap it might be excellent.

Oh and it needs to either drop its use of the Sigil setting or let you actually go through more than a couple of all those alleged doors the city is allegedly full of. Giving the player freedom would disrupt the Extremely Important Story of course so it'd probably be better just to drop it. It's not like accurately representing Planescape canon really matters. But having a million doors to other worlds in a video game and then never letting the player choose a few to step through is aesthetically criminal.
