6253560 No.6253560 [Reply] [Original]

Just pulled the trigger and got an everdrive 64 + a couple of tribute 64 controllers.

Anyone got some recommendations for compatible romhacks or hidden 64 gems? I know it's a pretty small library but I've mostly only played the big titles.

N64 has an underwhelming scene for the sort of ROM hack I prefer (QoL ones) but Smash Remix is pretty good.

Find a game pak conversion of F-Zero X Expansion Kit. No 64DD required, stereo music and additional tracks included. The only downside is that you can't save custom tracks and cars since they were originally saved to a 64DD disk.

Really counterbalances the Goemon fiasco from a few months back.

Bangai-O
Sin & Punishment
Mischief Makers
Densha de Go!
F-Zero X expanded (you can put the 64DD rom no problem)
Ogre Battle 64
Custom Robo
Wonder Project J2
Both 3D and 2D Bombermans

There's also a NES emulator in that thing

You can actually. You just have to reset before powering the system off.

sorry to tell you but the n64 doesn't have hidden gems.
all the games everyone know are the only good ones.
the same goes for the gamecube.

The only hacks i've got is Smash Remix ( adds a about four semi-clone characters and new stages ) and Luigi in SM64. Seems most of the console compatible hacks are either demos, they run like shit, or they're too short to be worth playing.

I don't know what constitutes a hidden gem since I don't know what you've already played, I personally haven't delved too deep into the N64's extended library myself.

the main hacks I play are the controller fixes for turok and duke nukem. You can't change the controls normally so you have have to press forward to look down.

There is also a mario kart hack that makes the game way faster, dont know if its this one

Shadows of the Empire is such a fantastic Doom Clone but it's a real shame it's ruined by the nigh unbeatable swoop bike level.

I'm sure you know if you look for that stuff, but OoT has some fucking great rom hacks for tweaking the game around. You can set it up so you can change boots, tunics or even use the ocarina using the dpad, there's options that let you control the water level in lake hylia (which is good for some glitches) and of course you can enable to hidden cutscene skip feature.

I'm not sure if Majora's Mask has that yet but it might by now, it's been a while since I looked this stuff myself.

>> No.6255089

>>6255085
Not OP but I've gotta find those, if they really work on an everdrive then they'd be great to have. The only advantage to the 3DS version would be gyro controls at that point.

You talk like a faggot and you're retarded. Aidyn Chronicles is shit. Gauntlet Legends is a bad port, play the superior arcade version. Same goes for Densha de Go!. Stuff like Sin and Punishment or Zelda romhacks are absolute brainlet tier. So you might like them.

>> No.6255096

>>6255089
Yeah the patcher is called Better OoT I think. It's made primarily for speedrunning practice so it tweaks around a lot of other things to be faster or more consistent with speedrunning in mind (like dampe's heart piece is 100% and block pushing is faster) but you can change a lot of settings to make it into a mostly vanilla experience, just with the dpad boots and cutscene skipping.

OoT does fare quite well in this scene, yeah. I was mainly thinking of the Super Mario 64 hacks which, I get some people really like them, but overall are just a bit gimmicky.
But speaking of OoT there are a set of hacks for the Gamecube versions (which work natively on N64) of OoT, MM and MQ which restore all of the N64 features i.e. removing the censorship, changing the button prompts back, etc. but keep the Gamecube's improved 480i resolution.

Sorry that this is sort of unrelated to your thread but does anyone know if the SD card is supposed to protrude like this? Also, it doesn't register that one is the inserted. When I try to use it, super mario all stars appears. I'm assuming that this is the last game that was played on it so the rom data is still in the devices memory (bought the cart used on eBay, the SD card is brand new). It is a super everdrive

You should certainly play The World Is Not Enough, Custom Robo V2, both Goemon games, Sin and Punishment and Mischief Makers if you haven’t yet.
Battle for Naboo is pretty solid as well.

>> No.6255724

>>6255648
I don't know for sure as I don't own one, but, in the videos I've seen of the Super Everdrive the SD card doesn't stick out THAT much. It's more like a couple of mms.

Plus options are just limited.
It's not like the brawler64's stick isn't wonky too, pretty much anything except stock and maybe the hori pad have imperfect sticks and you're not finding an official stock pad without a worn out stick anymore.

Gauntlet Legends is not a bad port on the N64. If anything it's the 2nd best console version behind the Dreamcast. Lol, like he wants to play the Arcade version on his computer. Now sin and punishment I can agree on.

I only own an Everdrive 64, but mine sticks out quite a bit... but not as much as the one in your picture. Yours seems to be an SNES one though so I can't say for sure if it's normal.

>> No.6256907

>>6255198
I'm interested in this project but I don't see what the point is. What are the other differences between this and the N64 games? Is 480i the only difference? The gamecube version I have supported 480p, and I have to imagine with how much slowdown there is on n64, an bump in resolution like that would make the game unplayable.

I don't even see anything in that post about rendering resolution.

>> No.6256923

>>6254810
Agreed. I played it on emulator and that game is really good, honestly. But I made use of the turbo speed quite often.

>> No.6256927

>>6256907
I've ran these patched ROMs for years because of the advantages over default Ocarina of Time, i.e. genuine Expansion Pak support (so slowdowns on console are rarer) but also they fixed a few bugs
There's a comprehensive list in the post

>> No.6256938

Personally I think Knife Edge is a hidden gem for the n64, even if it was originally intended to be played with a light gun.
Problem with n64 rom hacks is that nobody makes them to be hardware compatible. It's a damn shame really.
>>6256558
That sounds like a "you" problem. I have a steel bowl and it works great for me.
