Can /vr/ help me?

I'm building a retro RPG game for fun, got a few grand to drop on the graphics.

What 2D RPG did you like most for its graphics?

Valkyrie Profile.

looks neat

No, that's something else. It's a 3D Pokemon game. Pretty sure it's just called Pokemon 3D.

What generation of consoles are you basing your game on?
I mean, are you asking for 8-bit or 16-bit RPGs for inspiration?

Aiming for a 16bit era game.

I know this is a polarizing opinion, but:

Metal Slug

A lot of PC Engine games look amazing too.

Also the game in OP's picture handles like fucking ass, don't play it.

Terranigma.

Okay.
Obviously everyone's going to suggest Square's RPGs. I personally like the sprites a lot, but many of their games (especially Secret of Mana, its what keeps me from saying it's a 10/10) have shitty backgrounds in my opinion. The sprites stick out too much from them and sometimes the palette is too... 'bleached'. Chrono Trigger is an example where I don't feel they did this, it's very aesthetically pleasing in all its 16bit glory.
Also, related to your pic, I love the looks of Pokémon. Also, of Gunman's Proof for the SNES.

Good luck with your little project OP, I really hope it goes well. Someday I'll do something similar.

Probably the Mana games.
I love those quirky colorful landscapes and monster designs.

Sweet fuck this. Metal Slug has the most eye-popping sprites ever...it's really amazing. from the animations to the backgrounds...i would play something with that kind/level of graphics 'till doomsday.

Pic very fucking related.

sorry, hate to fanboy, but this is what people should think when they think sprite art. Smooth, detailed, and with personality...

Much as i love old final fantasy and crono trigger stuff, i have rarely seen anything reach Metal Slug's level of detail.

I really liked Bahamut Lagoon and yes I know like >>625319 said, it's Square. I just thought the world looked decent and the actual sprites in battle are a style I like.

Also. Call me nuts but I like that trippy world look of Terranigma where everything looks sort of curved... I could see some people being turned completely off by it though.

I suggest to try and do something unconventional. Don't make it too unsettling or different so that it hurts game play but I've seen a million maps and screens (mostly by Square) that all look like the same fantasy world. Just don't be afraid to take some risk with the design, try to innovate.

It's not that impressive there's a grand total of 5 different sprites that are all copypasted and doing the same short/looped animation.

Ishar series. Most definitely.

>> No.625470

Not retro. Already it's better than the Megaman /vr/ shit, though, so good job with that.

I'd say Dragon Quest VI on the Super Famicom. It looks quite nice, its DS remake even more so. But if you were to use that style then fix the retarded character animations, I hate how they're always moving.

>>625451
yeah...was more pointing to the overall art/style, as i didn't think he was going to just straight rip stuff.

>>625458
Wish there was an animation that shows all the progressive damage it goes through, then the big cannon bit...still, it's a hell of a lot more detailed then what's normally called sprite art.
