Thinking of doing tutorials on vanilla/Boom Doom mapping, to teach from basics to complicated tricks, such as self-referencing sectors, Boom's very useful tools and how to properly use them, how to change textures/sprites, DeHacked, joined sectors, timed abushes, editor features to fasten level making, design tips and overall useful knowledge I learned over the years for 'classic' Doom formats, since there seems to be a lot of people still interested in those old dogs, and are unaware of workarounds and hacks to improve their levels. Will share here if it's ever done.

While you're at it consider trying out SplicedWeeds soundfont
www.mediafire.com/file/er4klqrtv98joa6/SplicedWeedsGM4.sf2
Made by splicing together instruments from WeedsGM and Roland SC-55
I tried many soundfonts and consider this to be an overall best combo for wads with custom music. Arachno sounds too far off to me and in a few midis some instruments get drowned out - namely BTSX and Ancient Aliens

How's modding with half-life servers work (particularly sven)? It seems like metamod is kind of the defacto starting point, but from there there's about a million different mods that all seem like they're just trying to shoving an entire scripting engine into the game which makes me want to fucking shoot somebody for this kafka bullshit where every mod for the mod for the mod has their own bunch of outdated plugins and google isn't showing me a single webpage that's less than 12 years old

Don't worry, in the DOSBOX version there is a bug with difficulty settings that breaks the game in most difficulty settings; it doesn't take 16 minutes to explain the bug but this is the best demonstration that I could quickly find on jewgle:
Basically, when you save a game and load it on the easiest difficulty setting, enemy damage is TRIPLED, dealing even more damage than they do on the hardest difficulty; conversely, when you save a game and load it on the hardest difficulty, enemy damage is HALVED, roughly matching that of the easiest difficulty

Yes you can theoretically load an infinite number of mods provided they are compatible with PrBoom+. I know that Crispy Doom does not work with Doom Mod Loader (DML), so you have to use command lines/.bat files. I don't know if PrBoom+ works with DML but I use command lines for it anyway since I can just copy them from my Crispy Doom folder and just change "crispy-doom" to "prboom-plus." GZDoom has a much larger variety of mods that it can load (and you can load them with DML); I'm no expert but it seems PrBoom+ cannot load any .pk3 mods.

Some custom monster or sprite mods will crash the game if the map has custom monsters. For example, these are my favorite mods for Crispy Doom/PrBoom+/GLBoom+:
>The high resolution Doom sound effects pack: https://www.perkristian.net/game_doom-sfx.shtml
>Doom Minor Sprite Fixing Project v1.9: https://www.doomworld.com/files/file/18536-doom-2-minor-sprite-fixing-project-v19/
>Vanilla Doom smooth weapons: https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/102462-vanilla-doom-smooth-weapons/
But the newest version of Sunder WILL crash if you use vsmooth.wad with it. It might crash with the sprite fixing mod as well but I haven't done extensive testing to try it out; it seems to run fine with it though. These are not problems in GZDoom however because you can use fancier .pk3 mods just fine. For example:

:[ Sorry I can't help, anon. I got VirtualMIDISynth to work in all three of my source ports, thanks to help from an anon in last thread, and it sounds identical to me.

Now, I need to decide which soundfont I want to use with which MIDIS. So far, SGM soundfont is the absolute best one I've discovered for Doom Episode 1 (matches the metal MIDIs nicely), but I haven't found a soundfont for Going Down that sounds better than the default FluidSynth MIDI player. At first, I thought this was a chore, but it adds a degree of customization that I really like, and once you find the best sound, it makes a world of difference. These are the ones I downloaded so far >>6250695 and I am still downloading two more (touhou and 8bit.sf2) based on that same anon's recommendations.

Which WAD/MIDIs? Going Down? For gd.wad I love PrBoom+/GLBoom+'s default FluidSynth over everything else; the synthesizer sounds great, very scary and shrieking/piercing. It sounds different than GZDoom's FluidSynth, and every VMS soundfont I try drowns out the synthesizer, like SGM sounds better in every respect EXCEPT for the most important thing, the synthesizer. Musyng Kite has the best percussion by far, but I have 0 experience mixing and matching instruments in VMS like the anon from last thread recommended

The wad Demonsteele comes with a .pk3 called "Nowthat'swhaticallMIDI." It's got 350 midified tracks from the world over. And then another guy made another .pk3 when Terminus abandoned Demonsteele and expanded that list to 800. At a glance, SGM sounds king, but then it drowns out other instruments + that bass just isn't there. I suppose I could take out instruments to mix and match, but FluidSynth'll do me just fine.

Do you have any programming experience? If not, your best bet would be to find a DECORATE weapons tutorial then ASAP transition from DECORATE to ZScript with the, a more recent and much better scripting language supported by the engine. There's a conversion guide on the wiki.

>Specifically stuff like, say, assigning multiple sounds to actions
It depends on the action, and whether you're modifying some existing code or writing something from scratch.
>Hideous Destructor
This is one of the most complex mods out there. You should start with getting a grip of how the system works by making a basic weapon replacement mod of your own first.

I know my limitations though. For the most part, what I want to do is take the sounds from Meta Doom and put them in HidDes. I know for some I could just straight up replace the sound or make an addon for it,

But the trouble there would be having separate sounds for demons sharing the same sounds. Or having the player character play a sound when jumping, for example.

>Does any decent zscript reference/documentation exist at all?
Yes, there's plenty now. What you need to realize is that you can essentially write normal Decorate in zscript, as long as you add a pair of "{ }" and ";" in the right places, as specified in the "converting decorate to zscript" page on the wiki. After that, you can begin introducing zscript-exclusive features to your decorate-plus-semicolons.

Next stop after you're at that level is to read about the available variable types and the concepts of pointers and casting. Once you've done that, you virtually don't need any more documentation except for the most arcane features like rewriting the entire menu system from scratch or the level pre-processing shit. Everything you'd need in a normal mod is easily available in gzdoom.pk3.

>It seems too new to be feasible yet since literally only the NO Chicken and his closest friends know how ro use it.

to list the ones that there are:
Pistol Upgrade replaces the chainsaw and gives it a burst fire option if you press altfire
Shotgun gets 2 upgrades 1 upgrade replaces the SSG and gives you the power to shoot shells for 1, the other replaces the rocket launcher and allows you to shoot rockets
Uzi is just there for stunlocking
BFG is in the Plasma spot while it's upgrade is sits in the bfg spot which makes the gun ludicrously overpowered.

I just noticed GZDoom has a sound option to seamlessly switch between VirtualMIDISynth, FluidSynth, OPL Emulation, etc. I used to have the most fun on Crispy Doom, but I might just use GZDoom with reduced resolution from now on, unless I explicitly need Crispy Doom to replicate the original Doom mechanics, like for playing on Nightmare

What is the minimum resolution for GZDoom? The game seems to refuse to go any lower than 640x400, which is a shame because I *just* started having fun playing D4V on Chocolate Doom; I was gonna goof around with hardware rendering + custom brightmaps + gore mods with 320x200 resolution but looks like I'll have to do it with 640x400, pic related, it's hilarious

Doom 4 Vanilla + Chocolate Doom's/Crispy Doom's 320x200 resolution is fuckin' sweet; I can't believe I never tried this before even though I've had the mod since it came out.

I'm using Crispy Doom for the Crispy Doom options like colored HUD (helps me see when I'm low on health/ammo so I don't have to look down as often), weapon recoil pitch (screen shakes when you shoot, it looks lit), mirrored corpses, projected crosshair (crosshair function just like a red dot laser), but otherwise it runs just like Chocolate Doom.

Doom has soul, but yeah, Quake has a lot of soul, in part because of its crazy convoluted development, the medieval gothic horror(ish) aesthetics suddenly juxtaposed with a bit of sci-fi for a fast action shooter is a great combo, and you see so much of the authors in it.

American McGee really came into his own here, Sandy Petersen was in his element, what with all the Lovecrafting, and Tim Willits made his best maps here, all of it clad with gorgeous art and design by Adrian Carmack and Kevin Cloud. Trent Reznor's sound design and music suited the darkness and grit perfectly. I think it says a lot about the devs that they were all unhappy and forced to make bitter compromises in design and vision to just churn out the safe option, yet they still knock it out of the park and the result is an amazing game that's still cherished and played today.

The whole combination we're seeing is because of the new AC game having the same release date as the new DOOM game, but Isabelle has been deliberately downplayed with Tom Nook returning as the game's mascot after people started complaining about Isabelle's hostile takeover of the franchise and subsequent saturation. If you're asking because you're worried your toaster can't run it, that shouldn't be an issue and if it is it's probably because you're using a bloated sourceport like GZDoom (which adds a ton of functionality and modern conveniences for mappers but none of that will benefit playing vanilla or mods not made to take advantage of those features). If you're asking because you want to play the game "old-school" then use Chocolate or Crispy DOOM, the former bieng a source port that 100% accurately captures the game as it was played in 1993 and the latter being a fork of the former which adds a few extra features, mainly cosmetic or rendering-based features.
There aren't a lot of actual in-game settings in the vanilla game; you can select low-detail mode which doubles the width of pixels so the game only has to draw half the screen size, and you can mess with the resolution to make the game window smaller. These were things that you may have needed to do on a modest computer in 1993 to keep your framerate up but nothing you need now unless you're doing it for fun I guess.

I have no issue with crossing Doomguy with cute characters—the juxtaposition between DOOM's reputation and the cuteness being portrayed can be great, and you see it even in non-crossover fanart—as long as it's not overly forced. The problem with both AC and Hazbin is they're both not-at-all subtly forced, with some anons almost spamming it. I hope this shit doesn't end up tainting the view of crossovers in general.

That's not exactly what it was. People knew about the secret, but the sector the secret was on simply couldn't be triggered due to the geometry of the area and the teleporter being there, and the pain elemental forced it to be triggered. There are a number of secrets that can't officially be triggered even though you can get into the areas and get whatever is hidden there.

I might be going crazy but I think gzdoom at some point had a midi player downgrade or some shit because I recently upgraded to the most recent version and it sounds slightly shittier in certain songs compared to the version I was using (2017ish). From what I've read it has something to do with the GPL stuff they did.
Is there any way to have gzdoom play midis like it used to? I liked the old sound better

Been trying to make a female sound replacer that's as close to vanilla as possible, and this is what I have so far.

It's mostly heavily edited from Meta Doom along with some other stuff. feed back would be appreciated.

I'm honestly really surprised no ones tried to make sounds that are as close as possible. Most I've heard are pretty bad, imo.

I have some questions about the past.

Why was the Doom engine so acclaimed at its launch? At that time, there was no computer graphics and even other games with texture mapping?
Or was it the possibility of running a 3D simulation on an i386, resulting in something never seen by the general public that made it successful?
Were there no other visually impressive games for the PC before Doom?

And about Quake, I see that shortly after its launch in 96 there was a boom in the field of 3D, other engines appearing almost in parallel with it and what most have in the late 90s are 3D games, even specialized 3D consoles were created. How is it that in a short time 3D became so accessible to both developers and users? Was it the creation of faster graphics cards and processors that was responsible for this? Where does OpenGL enter the equation?

I like the idea of Titans carrying Hell temples but all i can see work out is moving background textures of buildings and giant Titan fingers behind balconies/platforms to indicate they're carrying the buildings.

Machine Games fucked up New Colossus with the help of Bethesda.
Shillmanlives made a preview video and said it was good, only to say it was mediocre at best when it released.

Fallout 76 was all a lie.

Rage 2 was hyped with gameplay footage and to be one of the sickest things ever.
It was mediocre.

Quake Champions was underwhelming, never had a chance to truly shine.

So yeah,I'm starting to doubt it's gonna be better than 2016(which I liked).

There's certainly a lot of those, mostly on Twitter and Reddit. I think the people who are actually interested in the original games and their long legacy will probably look more towards forums where you can find people talking about and engaging in that stuff, and I guess here.

Before today I've only played Doom 2016 but I'm loving classic doom and almost finished Doom 1, once I'm finished the first 2 I will start playing some mods to pass the time until eternal comes out. While I might just be on the hype train for doom I have to admit that I've enjoyed both classic and 2016 been more than most games that come out today. I was watching a video on 2016 that summarised it very well in my opinion. While many games try to do too much Doom stops at the right place, giving us a simple game that is very fun. I loved how in 2016 the whole focus was on action and lore was there if you wanted it.

Not him but I think I get what he's saying; MCU/Disney Star Wars fans (to generalize of course) are people who slavishly devote themselves to a franchise despite not actually having that much love for the series and their history. For MCU it's people who have never read a comic in their life, for Star Wars it's people who have never touched the expanded universe games/books/etc., and if a new product contradicts or defaces something classic they tend to defend it super fucking hard (e.g., when Disney culled the entire Star Wars EU "superfans" applauded it pointing out the common flaws with a lot of EU works, Skywalker wankery and that time they brought Palpatine back to life etc., but then when Disney's new movies did exactly that and plucked some bad ideas straight out of the EU works in question they have complete cognitive dissonance). I think there's nothing wrong with simply being a casual fan of something and not digging into it hard, but that's not what these "superfans" are; they're more or less devoted to the corporate brand that currently owns the franchise, even though the original creators of said franchises no longer have any control or influence over them.

In the context of nu-DOOM, I suppose it's people who got into the series because of 2016/Eternal, and who proceed to willfully ignore the past 27 years of history with the franchise. They aren't a fan of classic id software's labors or the many fan creations, they're fans of Zenimax's DOOM, and consider Zenimax the authority on what DOOM *is* despite them simply buying the rights to the IP. Hence them getting really hung up over piracy despite none of the classic id devs getting a cent of the purchase anymore and Carmack saying "go ahead and pirate it, I pirated a lot of shit when I was young so I'd be a hypocrite if I told you not to."

On some maps, there are triggers that are supposed to teleport in enemies, but they don't work. I don't know if that applies to Doom 2 maps, though.

You will need to look through walk-throughs on jewtube, but if you're going to put in THAT much time, I think you'll have a lot more fun doing for a deathless run of each of Doom's episodes 1-3. Going for UV-max is boring, spending time running around looking for stuff; it's much funner to blast through levels on UV or Nightmare, going for deathless runs.

I made some play-throughs to help players complete deathless runs of either Nightmare or UV, since I couldn't find any guides on youtube. I had to watch UV-speed and NM-speed speedruns to learn the fastest routes, then I watched NM-100%secrets runs to learn where all the secrets are, then I visited all of the secrets in-game to decide if they were worth going to in a Nightmare run or not, then I spent time practicing the routes on lower difficulties, then the majority of time was spent grinding trying to secure deathless runs. You can copy the route and just go for deathless UV runs instead. If you try it on Nightmare do it on GZDoom first because monsters do not respawn aggro'd on GZDoom like they normally should.

i don't think that's necessarily the case especially given that practically rerelease the classic games with each new game and they just ported the older games on newer consoles.

I was wrong - the solution was as simple as using PrBoom's MIDI player + PrBoom's soundfont (FluidSynth + Tim6MGmb.sf2) inside of GZDoom and now they sound identical.

Now I need to figure out how to use FluidSynth in Crispy Doom so I can get the same epic music. And I need to test out all of the soundfonts inside of FluidSynth instead of VirtualMIDISynth to see how they compare; luckily I can do this all from inside of GZDoom

A full set. The plan is by default you start with the wood sword and wood boomerang, a few weapon slots are subweapons (boomerang, candle and bomb) you cycle between with reload and zoom, and use them with altfire. The kicker here is the subweapons will do different things depending on what primary weapon you have out at the time.
So like if you have the sword equipped, the candle will behave kinda like the original Zelda 1 candle, but if you have the bow out, you'll shoot a fire arrow and a scattering of fireballs.

Ammo is gonna be the same, you pick up bullets, shells, all that shit. Bullets will be for the crissword, shells will be for the bow, rockets will be for bombs, and cells will power the magic rod.

Use zdl and make sure your load orders and settings are fully synced up, copy your gzdoom inis if you have to. fraglimit is a lives system for hd. This will have a delay that ranges from hard to play to fucking impossible unless you are playing on LAN with fast internet or at least live within the same city. Mess with the multiplayer settings in zdl to see what works best for you, this works for me and 2 friends, but for one of them their broadband can become absolute shit at any time of day and it becomes unplayable without desyncs or a 2 second delay on movement, keep your load order small and adjust your settings so that gzdoom gets max fps at all times.
