Let's talk about great 2D Pinball games.
I just on a whim picked up Little Mermaid 2 Pinball Frenzy and it is excellent!
What are some other great games in the genre

People rave about those turbographx pinball titles but I just find them uninspired and ordinary.
There's a bunch of pinball games for the gameboy that are really shitty. I often wonder if the people who made video pinball games ever played the real thing.
Psycho Pinball for the megadrive/genny is one of if not the best retro pinball game out there.

it's really easy to mess up pinball, there are a ton of retro pinball games with unforgivable physics. of note, there is a certain non-retro gameboy pinball game featuring Pac-Man, where the flipper physics break when the up-post is not active (apparently the devs just never tested it without the post up), and it has no high-score table.

Goddamn it, i genuinely came here to recommend this game expecting no one else to know it!

Anyways, the Crush series are pretty damn good, Alien Crush, Devil's Crush and etc.

Kirby Pinball Land and Revenge Of The Gator for the original Game Boy are a lot of fun too.

If you aren't against modern games that are digital only, Pinball Arcade and Pinball FX3 are fun, though the first one has expensive DLC.

Oh, and Demon's Tilt is the closest thing to a recent Crush game all around and it's pretty fun.

The Pokémon pinball games are fucking shite.
There's like one main table that has almost no obstacles on it and a second table that is even smaller. The physics are also fucked, the ball just goes where it decides to go and nothing has real weight to it.
The only good thing about it is the art and how it looks, people who think its a good game just have fond memories that cloud their judgement.

Say the name, but it's Fantastic Pinball for PS1 and Sega Saturn, another fun game.

There is also Battle Pinball on the SNES but i haven't played it, all i know is that it's based on Gundam, Kamen Rider and Ultraman with tables dedicated to those franchises, also one based on an original character from the developer.

Seems like a weird choice, one anime and two tokusatsu franchises, two franchises with tall fighters and human sized ones, one is based on mechas while the others are transforming heroes, there's always an odd man in the trio.

Again, haven't played it so i can't say if it's great, but it seems interesting, if for nothing else but the bizarre crossover and the fact it's a pinball game.

...Because this is video game pinball, it's like asking why you don't just try to do or imitate what characters in the games you play do.

Besides, both are very different and tend to have different physics, there are things that can be done with video game pinball that would be impossible on real tables and that's part of the fun.
>>6239239
Oh yeah, the GB had some fun pinball games, sadly, i feel like after the GB era, pinball games started to be less about taking advantage of the fact that they are video games to trying to put either actual tables in games or be a close simulation of those.

Which is fine, a lot of people prefer the real life style, i just think video pinball has it's own charm that went away from a while, though i am glad that Demon's Tilt exists.

But seriously, why isn't anyone doing a Kirby Pinball Land style game nowadays, or a Pokemon/Super Robot Pinball one too?

I would gladly pay money for such a game.

To be fair, that's a GBC game so it's very late 90s, and that's not actually a Little Mermaid game but Little Mermaid II (released only to home video).
Sadly it was made by some shovelware company so it looks kinda shitty.
For true 90s disney renaissance vidya you gotta look into the Capcom and Sega games from the early to mid 90s.
Capcom's Little Mermaid game for NES is a lowkey pretty cool game that got heavily ignored back then because it was "for girls". In reality, it's like a fun version of Ecco the dolphin with a cute waifu.

Many '90s pinball tables with dot matrix displays had an ultimate goal, usually achieved by beating all missions, which would activate the 'Wizard Mode'. After completing the wizard mode the game would continue as normal or reset mission completion. That's the closest you had to 'beating' a real life pinball table. Many realistic pinball video games would follow similar formula.

Honestly, i love that they are about chasing scores, a good score chasing game of any kind, particularly pinball, will make you come back for more and more developing your strategies and skills, and as you see yourself improving, you get bigger scores with your high score or someone else's becoming a great objective to beat, since someone mentioned Space Cadet, i have really fond memories of playing that game between my father as we would try to beat each other's score.

Sadly score chasing games mostly died after the early 80's in arcades and the Atari 2600,'and few games managed to get popular in this vein...unless you count mobile games which have a suprising number of these.

Still, i wonder if we could make a thread about posting our own scores in retro games and make a board competition, just posting random scores and seeing if someone would want to challenge your scores...probably leading to a lot of video pinball scores.

Almost every pin made since the 90's has had a major progression system designed to build up to a final wizard mode. In an interesting design twist Total Nuclear Annihilation actually completely ENDS if you successfully destroy the 9th reactor. If you did so on your first ball, then subsequent balls instead just tally up the total scores of all the reactors again.

You know, the most recent pinball games that come to mind are mostly western, and the most recent Nintendo pinball game was Metroid Prime Pinball.

Was there some interest in the 80's and 90's in Japan that mostly left afterwards?

Because that sucks, their pinball games did more crazy stuff with their tables that couldn't be done on real life tables, but i guess interest died down.
