This is the weirdest thing for me, they sent from some gothic horror thing to a scifi HR Giger mash-up. Both styles are awesome, but people who really loved the first one are understandably put off by the sequel.

Way better shooters from 1997 alone. Truth be told, Quake 2 is a jack of all trades as a multiplat. The Deathmatch is great but the single player needs more work. Its a fun campaign but I wish someone would make a mod that Quake 1-ifies it

The multiplayer is definitely much stronger than the singleplayer. I think Quake 2's weakness is that the first couple of hours are not as well made as they could have been, it gets a LOT better as it goes.

Also I thought popular opinion was that Quake 3 was a pretty solid multiplayer game, and I hear that from plenty of people who resented the lack of a real singleplayer campaign.

Q4 is underrated but the machine body horror that that and ETWQ did resumed the strogg well.
Q2 had the best weapon design, and Xpacs gave more variety, people say "sponge enemies" but forgets that only 2 or 3 enemies are for a reason, and all of them fall easy to 1 or 2 point blank shots of the super shotgun.

As a normal game it's amazing but as an id title it's only very good. For me DM on The Edge was just amazing - we used to play this map for years on LAN.

QuakeII's weakness was that it seemed more conforming to what an AAA titel should be... it didn't seem to have the balls of old. One could sense that they were slowly using their unique charme.

Because it wasn't Quake, because it was really show-offy for 1997, because games year later blew it away entirely, because the single player campaign was an afterthought next to the multiplayer, because the game was DARK AF on anything but the glide api, because it wasn't made like the mess that Quake 1 could've been and lacked all the bizarre compromises the team made in order to get it out on time.

You missed done games but Romero was never the power House behind id no matter what his fanboys will tell you. Carmack has always been the cutting edge tech guy and id made a lot of great tech demos but that's mostly what they are. As tech stagnated there wasn't any way to go from doom to quake again. Doom three was extremely impressive for the time but it came at the expense of gameplay. Something no other id game had to do just because tech changed and now the bottle neck wasn't a lack of workable design but limited power to enhance the current design

Quake 2 is fine. It's a fun if generic fps. It went in to define most modern fps games weapons by proxy if three

Not much, as said he kinda sank himself with Dai-Katana. He still has talent, Sigil was a pretty good set of levels for Doom, clearly he would still be map designer of value to any FPS production he was attached to, of standout value even, as he can actually sculpt a level with some non-linearity and exploration, without it either being a wide sandbox or a linear rail assembled from premade chunks, which would be the dominant styles you'll see in modern FPS.

I think he's just content with doing smaller scale stuff these days, probably far less stressful, and probably with far less ego clashing.
