What's the extent of your collection, /vr/, and what are your goals?
Do you collect just for the sake of it or do you manage to play all the games you get?
If there's a title you like, but it's rare ad expensive, do you think it's worth buying it?

So far I've tried to collect only the games I'm really interested in, but it's kinda sad when you realize there's not much else you're really looking to get out there.

I don't really understand people who want to have a "complete" collection of a given console, anyways. Who wants a copy of Barbie on the NES? Or Bubsy 3D for the PS1?

>> No.623351

Fuck so that's what a big ass collection looks like?

Urgh I'll have to slow down on mine as long as I don't have to house to properly expose what I already have then.

>> No.623365

My objective is to get games I enjoy playing. Not really going for full sets of anything. Some games like Little Samson I'd pay full price for but others like Earthbound, I wouldn't grab unless it was under $100

>> No.623378

>>623365
Fuck Earthbound and its insane prices in the ass.
It's not that I'm interested in it, hell I'm one of the few that doesn't really like it. But to see the used game market screw itself over like that really pushes my buttons.

Having a complete collection is almost impossible anyway. Where do you draw the line? Take the NES for example. Are you going to get bootlegs and multicarts (like the Tengen Tetris and the Myriad Games 6 in 1), too?
And what about the NWC and stadium events? Not even counting the famicom, there were like 1000 games released for the system.
That's a commitment!

My goal is to pick up the games I primarily want to play; if I get other games in lots, I'll keep them if I don't have a copy of them. Whatever duplicates I get I want to sell to /vr/ at a cheaper price than what they go for on eBay.

Ultimately, though, I don't value boxed and sealed games as much as other people, as I'd rather play then watch them collect dust. Additionally, the rarer/more expensive games on popular consoles(Demon's Crest, Earthbound, Tron Bonne, etc.) are things that I would rather get lucky and find at my weekly garage sale and flea market visits. The shit I gotta save my money for is the Sega Saturn games, because realistically, they'll be very hard to find in the wild.

>> No.623834

I want a complete SNES/SFC collection.

Most of my SNES collection is unboxed, but I'm trying to get all the SFC games complete just because it's fairly cheap.

>> No.623846

If a game looks interesting then I consider it. I usually won't spend over 30$ on a game unless its a title I already know of or its been said that its a great game. That said, Im at about 50 NES games, I honestly don't forsee myself exceeding 100 cartridges.

as of right now i have over 1,191 games but this includes non-/vr/ related items and even non-physical games like steam.

my personal goal when collecting is to play what i buy regardless of how bad the game is, as i figure it even a shitty game i bought for $2 or less is still worth 20 minutes of entertainment at the minimum if by nothing else to be amazed by how bad a game could be.

but what if that cheap game turns out to be quite fun to play but has a few flaws that caused it to fall to obscurity? Totally Rad for NES for example is a fun little game with dozens of powers almost megaman-like really, but the game quickly becomes frustrating once you realize all powers share a single non-replenishing energy bar (refills after beating a level) and the boss at the end of each level take more than 50 hits to beat. it also got a laughable surfer dude treatment when it got localized.

I want a Dreamcast for a decent price. I have games for it that I want to play but no console. I'd also like a Genesis eventually. I literally have nothing Sega console wise.

As for games. I want Mario Party 3 because that's the one I played with cousins in the day. Too bad it happens to be the most expensive one for 64. Just hoping I luck into one somewhere. I still need an expansion pack for the 64. Hopefully I can get a decent 64 console with one in it at a sale or something but I'm not counting on it.

I'd like to run into a Castlevania game just because I like all the early titles (even Simon's Quest).

To be honest I have mostly everything I want. I could probably buy everything I just listed and be over with it but I like the thrill of the hunt. If I was ever to do a complete collection it would be something somewhat easy and not too common like a complete Dreamcast collection or something.

because it's really not rare enough to warrant the price it goes for by a long shot but the demand for the game has skyrocketed in recent years creating a bubble that will eventually pop once the demand goes back to normal levels, but until that happens people here who want to buy a copy are just going to have to deal with it.

speaking of bubbles demon's crest has been jumping rapidly lately, good thing i bought my copy just last year for $30

EB is pricey because it's a first-party Nintendo IP installment that didn't get enough love at launch and is now overly loved, so you have millions of fans fighting over the 140,000 copies of the English version of the game that exist. It's a large-scale sleeper hit.

>> No.623953

I have exactly 100 games for the NES right now.

My policy is to pick up any random clean cartridge thats less than 5 bucks.

My other policy is to pick up any NES game that fit most of the parameters of: Badass 80s guy holding a space laser with a starfighter flying in the background. Two recent piuckups that fit this description are Star Soldier and Image Fight, but I have picked up others.

Other than that, I simply collect the games I want to play.

When I get done with SNES, which I plan to buy "Hagane: the Final Conflict" last, as a last bang, I want to work on N64, NES, and Genesis collecting them more seriously.

Like most here, i buy everything i feel like playing, and i'm also trying to get original copies of the classics i've played as a kid (because i also love playing those games).

In the short term, I'd like to find complete copies of Valis I, and III and Alisia Dragoon without paying out the ass for them. I'd also like to track down a Turbografx, but the rarity of it, and the sheer number of rare peripherals I'd need to track down to do want I want with it, makes it seem pointless.

Long-term, I'd like to rack down everything Dreamcast-related released in NA. I've got a decent start, but I'm still casual-tier so far.

Can't speak for anyone else, but my mindset is that I'm only going after the games that actually meant something to me growing up and those games I always wanted but missed out on, played later, and feel as though they "should have been there".

I don't want some crazy giant wall sized bookshelf worth of games, actually I'd be good with a final PC game count of something like 30 or so games.

Part of it is also aesthetics. I play my games, but it's not like I'll play them continuously. I'd like a small, extremely varied bookshelf, something that also looks nice and I can show off.

Also the subjective satisfaction plays into it, sure. My 'stuff', meaning my comics, books, games, posters, and everything else sort of represents me. I mean, fuck, it's my house, I'll put whatever I want on my bookshelves.

All the Games I rented or had and sold as a kid (which isn't too many more) And games that look interesting and are highly rated on each system, with special focus on systems I really liked like Gameboy DS, or SNES,
and I will "All of them!" a franchise if I really liked the franchise, like Zelda.

Somehow typing it like that makes it sound like a lot more games than I'm actually getting.

Me too, I just got Majora and Conker for N64, games I always wanted back in the day: being able to finally play them was a good feel.

Your pic is awesome, now I want to collect pc games! They're so rare and expensive where I live, though...

I mostly want to get all the classic games on the N64, when I was a kid I only played the same 5 games because my parents couldn't afford more. Missed out on Banjo games, Glover, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Majora's Mask and so on.

I'm also collecting for the Ps1, never had the console, I also never played FF7, 8 or 9 or any of the great RPGs the console had. Currently playing through MGS, Ace Combat 2 and Silent Hill. I know I could play them all on emulators but I rather play them in the console to get the "full experience", if that makes any sense.

I will eventually start collecting for the NES, Snes, Genesis, Dreamcast and Saturn. But for now I wan't to focus mostly on the Ps1 and N64.

Then I have a Ps2 and Gamecube collection, but those don't count as retro, so yea.

Probably goes back to when I was a kid when my parents wouldn't buy me a new game untill I had completed the last one 100%.

Because of this I've got 2 book shelves full of retro games and I know I've beaten all of them. It's not an insane collection but more of a trophy cabinet for myself, looking at all of the games I've beaten.

Hey, good to hear it! PC game collecting is so much fun. I love how most of the older games, think 1986 - 1995 had tons of STUFF in the box.

And I don't know about you guys, but I feel a hell of a lot more satisfied when I look at the contents of Ultima Underworld or Secret of Monkey Island. Look at all that crap! You get a fucking full sized newspaper in monkey island.

If I was going to make a suggestion on where to start, or whatever, I'd say separate PC gaming into 2 sets of years:

1991 - 2000 (or there abouts... when they phased out the big boxes sounds about right). Pretty much any Pentium 1 (or 2) PC set up (Don't forget your 3dFX Voodoo3!) will play everything you want

1991 - and earlier. This is where things get more tricky. Honestly I'd say collect Amiga games instead of IBM/PC games, because capabilities were better. But games back then were directly tied to a pcs CPU... so your 90's gaming PC won't play them right.

Another thing I want to add is about prices on PC game collecting. It isn't really as bad as you'd think. Oh sure, you could point out shit like Fallout 1 and 2 going for $300 a pop, but that isn't even accurate either.

Pic related. I just bought this yesterday. Kinda sorta not retro, but still fits my example. I've seen copies in horrid condition go for 2x or 3x as much, simply because people couldn't be arsed to wait.

Play your cards right and PC game collecting is dirt cheap.
