Whats your favorite campaign/mappack, any suggestions for someone new to WADS that's beaten all the vanilla content and Hellbound?

I will admit though, I'm committing sin and using Project Brutality literally just for the blood and some of the weapons tho, I changed all the other stuff to vanilla, I'm sorry I like the exploding badguys

I got Quack on Good Old Games (because I'm a dumb moralfag), but it lacks some animations, there's no music, and whenever I finish the episode 3, it counts the episode 1 and 2 as not finished.

Moralfag gets what he deserves.

You've gotta download the soundtrack, it's copyrighted so every legal distributor deleted it.
You can download it at Quaddicted iirc.

Use a sourceport such as Quakespasm (or its Quakespasm-Spiked fork if you wanna have your FPS over 72, because in every other sourceport allowing such breaks the physics), or FitzQuake's MarkV.

>>6227332
Play Plutonia, and use a low skill setting if you're new to Dewm.
TNT sucks after the first few levels so you're not missing much if you skip it.
Doom 64 is great

>> No.6227378

>>6227376
Forgot to mention: The "lack of animation" you refer to is normal. The original game didn't have interpolation between keyframes, that's a feature added a bit later with the GL version of Quake. All major sourceports have animation interpolation turned on by default iirc.

Yes, just copy them. The Ghosts Album I used for Dimensions Of The Past and stuff. Also outright copied all of the music into the folder for Arcane Dimensions, didn't know how to make it play randomly on each map, so I just picked through some random tracks when I entered each level, until I found something I felt suitable.

I really like the music for Scourge Of Armagon and Dissolution Of Eternity, they have that high tempo touch that was missing from regular Quake. I actually quite love the music Reznor did for Quake, and though it has some variety, it's ultimately still just a bunch of ambient tracks.

I've been awake for three days, and I've just had a hypnogogic hallucination, in which an idea was revealed to me:
A classic FPS game with a medium cast of characters, and it is a blend of a game and a sitcom.
Each level will be large, taking about half an hour to complete, and will feature explorations of the characters and explorations of semi-complex demi-linear levels which are open ended.
Each level would be released episodically, of course, and each "season" would end with a boss fight.

Just imagine Duke Nukem 3D meets Community (or King of the Hill, or whatever character-driven sitcom you want).

They can make great support enemies as evidenced by Doom. Being physically weak, but demanding attention because of their possible damage output is tight. When they're the main course the game is designed around then it's a cover shooter. Not a fan of that myself.

The have absolute place since you need to approach them tactically and mechanically in a different manner than a projectile-chucker. Same goes for melee monsters, homing missile shooters, those that apply status effects etc.
You ideally want as wide spectrum of behavior in a monster roster as possible. Using them in a good way in encounter design is responsibility of the level designer though.

Sigil would be after that, it's a consistent ballbuster through UV so mind that, but it's good, especially with the Buckethead music.

You could of course skip straight to Doom 2, it'll later make you appreciate just the effort Thy Flesh Consumed and Sigil puts into making your life tough with the original, smaller bestiary, then you could check out Final Doom to find out just how mean a map author can be with Doom 2's new monsters.

It's still pretty good. It's no Doom or Quake or anything, tends to play differently. In between the exploring levels there's a lot of running backwards in arena fights. No RNG on weapon damage is nice. BFE is meh, a failed demo for a modern shooter retooled into being a Sam game that kept iron sights, reloading and infinite rocket boxes for boss fights instead of 1st/2nd where you got backpacks for variety.
The secrets in 1st/2nd take a bit of getting used to. Mega hp/Armour? Probably fine. 1hp pill? Expect teleporting death.

I felt like some of Civvie's complaints are super overblown. Collecting a random secret just to spawn a bunch of enemies to ambush you is played for laughs, him raging at it felt odd because Doom does it too and he praises stuff like that. The biggest flaw of the Sam games is they get stale after a while and sometimes you have soooooooo much walking to do. People want to play it like Doom but its really not Doom. It steals the weapon archetypes but the way its meant to be played is different.

>>6229029

When was the last time you played Doom at all? Barons or Hell Knights have never been the most heart pumping of foes. They fuck you up when coupled with each other, or with weaker monsters. All BD does is makes them attack faster. The chance of smaller, weaker monsters aiding them adds tension. Look at E1M8. Quick specters, slow moving but fast attacking barons. You spin 'em around, you can get the barons to kill the pinkies, and you've got grenades you can lob to clear out a group of them. Your minigun fires faster than vanilla, so does the shotgun. Bing bang boom. I really feel like people who complain about BD's balance played for all of five minutes. I won't venture to say it's BETTER than vanilla like Marky Mark, but it's pretty fucking good.

Not surprised, that Brutal Doom kids do not even know the known challenge map packs.

Playing Brutal Doom is like going to fine restaurant, ordering a well-crafter expensive meal and then putting shitloads of ketchup over it (not gore reference). It's just that it ruins the fun and challenging parts by making them into completely different, samey and cheap from what they are supposed to be. They reduce the actual art of well crafted encounters into some way of killing time by fucking around with Doom. You are free to ruin your dinner with shitloads of ketchup, and you are free to ruin your Sunlust with Brutal Doom. Played it twice over, once in HD because I'm a hopeless masochist, once stock GZDoom to give the sort of feedback you're actually after.

I just walked out of bounds at the window here. Vanilla doomguy can't fit so it's not that big of a deal, but it wouldn't hurt to slap an impassable flag on it. The space effect is a bit dark too, I could barely see it in the bigger hallway. Good usage of pinkies and spectres there, though.

The level geometry's a bit too small scale for vanilla speed in the earlier parts of the level, it makes navigation more clumsy than it needs to be. Felt like you got the hang of it for the latter half of the map though. The red key room was a nice fight, but you've got a HOM on the closet to the right of the key.

The exit door has blue key textures but is actually locked by the red key. When I was playing with HD I missed the blue key completely, despite clearing the entire map. I only found it in the vanilla run thanks to GZDoom's dynamic lights. Might be a good idea to move it somewhere more conspicuous in its room. And fix the exit door lock so you actually have to get it, of course.

With such an emphasis on lighting, I was a bit surprised there weren't any light switches. Might've been neat to have one in the red key area, or the hallway before it with the dorms. Nothing too important, just a nice detail. Good little map overall, though. Decent health and ammo balance, I never felt like I had too much or too little of either, and I'm a sucker for sector furniture. I love all the little chairs and beds.

What's the best way to play Shadow Warrior with proper mouse look? I started Classic Redux and even after I messed around with the sensitivity settings it still doesn't feel like its using raw input. Also, for whatever reason the framerate gets real weird when you walk on moving "props," such as the crashed car at the beginning or the hidden fortune cookie in the rotating sign. Picking up fortune cookies and using the medikits also tanks the framerate momentarily. The new Blood port is miles better than this.

I played many maps much bigger than that map. None of them had bad performance. So, I wanted to know what does Hellbound's map29 has that makes it run so poorly. It can't be the map size, as it's fairly compact, nor enemy count (only 2000 enemies, and they're sprinkled throughout the level rather than big hordes, and the architecture and textures look nothing special. There's whole chunks of the map that are rendered at once due to seemingly poor optimization. In order to block rendering of sectors, you need to have areas of one-sided lines. There appears to be loads of areas where the mapper could have used one-sided lines instead of sectors without damaging visual quality.

Not sure what /vr/'s opinion on Karl Jobst is, but he recently got to play Doom Eternal like a bunch of other gaming youtubers recently and he talks about the potential for speedruns for it. I gotta admit, the fact that id and Bethesda brought someone that's all about speedrunning and not just a rando gamer youtuber really speaks to me about they feel about Eternal and the Doom community. It shows that Id has really gotten super confident in their product and know how to make great games, while also still being relevant in the gaming industry and showing that they actually care about the people that love their games at the same time. Then again, I felt that way too with the Mars Base demo speedrun race at Quake/Doomcon 2019, based on the fact alone that they brought on outsiders to the game industry to play their game in a relatively non-conventional style in front of a live audience months before the game comes out. And that was before it was delayed.

It was more so the fact that Doom Eternal is being talked about by someone that's not just a regular gamer youtuber saying "this game is great!!" He talks about the potential for Eternal as a speedrun game, which is about speed to begin with, so speedruns of it might be interesting to see pulled off. More importantly though, I don't think any game, in terms of its mechanics, has been talked about so much before its release. Speedruns for a game are usually talked about or looked into after it comes out, but the fact that speedrunning for Eternal is being discussed before it comes out to begin with is something different imo. Regardless of Eternal being a good game or not when it comes out (personally I think it'll be bretty gud), the fact that Id are this transparent about their own game before it's even out really says a lot about them as a company and how they understand their audience and the industry as a whole. Especially considering how unconfident they were about Doom 2016 being successful.

>Doom 1, Doom 2, Final Doom, Doom 64
You say that like it wasn't an expected product back then either. Not to mention the countless amount of usermade content out there. Yes, it may lack the expansive capabilities to be built on and the user-made content, but thats just how things are now. I'm judging it based on how it is, not whats built off of it. I did the same thing in Doom 2016 that i did in Doom 1 and 2, i beat it, then played through again to find the secrets, collectibles, upgrades i missed (without the suit upgrade that finds them for me). My favorite part was seeking out the hidden levers that opened up pieces of classic doom maps right in the 2016 levels, which unlocked the bonus modes to play through classic levels as 2016 doomslayer. There was plenty to do. And then after i found all of that stuff, I challenged it on harder difficulties, which were extremely difficult and made me approach everything a very different way. It's been a very long time since i've played an fps that has had stuff like that to keep me going with it after beating it once and if Eternal has the same formula or more, then it's going to be fun and im looking forward to it. It's not the same as Doom 1 and 2, but going as far as to claim the new approach is bland and one and done is inaccurate. It gave new life to a classic franchise while making sure to include certain aspects and gameplay styles that were both new to the series while also taking cues from old, fast paced action shooters. This was the kind of thing i was hoping for in Doom 3 and was disappointed when it took everything in a different direction.

That's next higher. Which parks all sectors in the wrong place rather than flatten them. I used "Raise to lowest ceiling" but then I wanted to raise ceiling a bit. The 'ceiling height' of the dummy sectors connected to the dummy sectors of each step need to be the same as the 'floor height' of the height you want the steps to achieve.

>that sector that ends the level when you die
Doesn't exist.
It's probably not possible without scripting because there's no actual player death triggers and you'd need a way to force exit the level after the player dies. Normally death exits just force kill the player at the same time as a voodoo doll is sent towards a walkover exit. If the voodoo doll died at the same time as the player you'd be able to put it on a scrolling sector next to a >56 height sector with an exit linedef in it but I don't think that's possible either, as voodoo dolls don't take damage when the player does. You could lower them into the pit at the same time as the doll is sent but that'd allow for the possibility that the player exits without dying, or dies (and restarts) before exiting.

There ARE ways to kill the player and end the level in vanilla Doom though, such as having him telefrag barrels that will inevitably kill both himself and an Icon of Sin. Scythe 1 and 2 do that.

The new doom games aside, i couldn't help but think about something i always talk about to people who don't understand (or try to understand) my preference for older games. Games today are incredibly advanced when it comes to visual spectacle, but a good 95% or so of games out there focus entirely on that with very little depth or substance underneath. Back in the day when technology was limited, developers didnt have the tools to create massive awe inspiring visuals, so instead the focus was put how to make the most of the gameplay, music, theming, intelligent design towards the player, and replay-ability. Developers had to make the most of all those things and what they created had to be very unique to stand out and even have a chance to get recognition.

Today is all flashy visuals, games shat out by giant companies that force feed us huge commercial campaigns filled with quotes of approval from big name critics to build hype for a product that ultimately sucks and is never remembered.

Every once in a while a gem will appear today that has the qualities that used to be needed for a game to be any good, but they are few and far between. I will admit that i like the new Dooms, but i can't give them recognition without acknowledging that there are plenty of modern gaming-isms floating among its homage to older fps mechanics.

You would have to reliably coax the player from the lowering platform sector into the sectors with the special type, which you can probably do by tricking him and playing on his expectations/instincts. Some people will guess that it's coming and try to see if they can break it, but what can you do.

The chaingunners will hose him down with lead for sure, but normally the level ends when he reaches 11% health, some .wads do full death exits by making him telefrag a bunch of barrels (on the map 30 slot, you can make the player telefrag his voodoo doll instead), which will reliably hit him for all his health and armor at once and skip past 11% to actually kill him. Whether he hits 11% health or 0% health, the level ends anyway, if he hits 0% health with the level ending, he would pistol start the next level; full health, and no inventory but the pistol and the customary 50 bullets. Some megawads do pseudo-episodes this way.

Actually, now that I think about it, you could actually make the lowering sector tranform with a donut action or something, make it donut into a sector with the special effect on it, maybe even with a dummy sector, if necessary.

It has even less in common with D4 mods or D4 itself, the only noticeable comparisons are the word "Slayer" in the title and the Praetor suit being relegated to a powerup

In order to make monsters teleport into the area on a que I should make a sealed room somewhere with a teleporter and make it accessible somehow on a trigger, correct? They'll still wake up as long as they are close enough to the sector in question?

>> No.6231435

>>6231421
In vanilla there's no way to push monsters, so you have to awaken them close to teleporting line.
Make your monster-storage room into relatively thin stripe with monster groups on one half and a teleporter line separating another half segment the teleporter line to lead to several different teleport destinations.
To activate monsters make sector they stand on to have same sector id as one you expect player to activate them in. Make sure player has to shoot near that sector so that monsters awaken.

In Boom you can push monsters with scrolling conveyor floors.
Put a ceiling blocker wall between monsters and teleporter line, that will rise when player crosses a trigger, to make monsters pour in.

>>6231448
Not in vanilla, no. Player has to shoot to awake monsters. Just put some chaingunners/archie nearby so player has to shoot them while standing in the joined sector.

OR just use Boom and use conveyors so that monsters spawn in just from player crossing the line.

Because if Icon Of Sin spits out a monster and the monster isn't woken up and stays there, and you just let the monsters pile up, they're just gonna be stuck like that like an immovable threadmill monster and literally nothing opposes you from fighting the boss.
So monsters are capable of telefragging other monsters on Map 30 to solve this, they're also capable of telefragging you, so as to not make you fucking stuck in a monster. It's open season on telefragging, in fact, because you can telefrag other players in co-op, and even yourself. Remember that voodoo dolls are unintended behavior.

>Back in the day when technology was limited, developers didnt have the tools to create massive awe inspiring visuals, so instead the focus was put how to make the most of the gameplay, music, theming, intelligent design towards the player, and replay-ability.

Anon it's not that I disagree with you, it's that you're wrong AND I disagree with you. It's that there are so many games out there that are mediocre as fuck, but look super pretty and have the budget to add in all kinds of superfluous shit like digitized actors, VAs, music by industry-famous people, etc. How many people remember MK the original for its gameplay and not the fact that you can rip a dude's spine out in it? How many people who switched to the Genesis in the year 1990 did so because it was a more capable machine than the NES and not "oh my god this game... has GOOD GRAFIKS"? How many people got suckered into a game that had a cool movie on the front and got stuck with something that wasn't even useful as a cat shit scooper?

Furthermore, these considerations don't go away just because you hit the fucking year 2020. Admit you're an old-ass boomer who doesn't remember a damn thing, drink your fucking boomer juice, and play the games you like.

You forget that Doom and, frankly, most of iD's games were state of the art at it's release. They could do gameplay AND graphics, but they were genuinely the exception. I'm glad we got a few damn good shooters throughout the nineties that still hold up graphically today and play really nicely.

This. Doom and Quake weren't just state in the art when it came to graphics, they were so because of really good optimization.

If not for Binary Space Partitioning, there's NO fucking way any average consumer computer could have run a game like Doom in 1993, or a game like Quake in 1996. They looked good and they RAN.
