There's a thread up on the original PlayStation prototype they worked on with Nintendo and it uses a capital S.

Yes, and I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that for the Sony PS1 they made the "s" lowercase for legal reasons, so they were "Nintendo PlayStation" (or Nintendo "Play Station") and "Sony Playstation". Also, notice all the "Playstation" usage in just these threads: >>6221630 >>6213636. And of course spell checker is now flagging "Playstation".

If it was Playstation then it would just be PX. Instead it's PSX because it's PlayStation.

Isn't something like that really easy to prove or disprove? The SCPH-1000, SCPH-1001 and SCPH-1002 all have PlayStation with a capital S printed on the console itself, as well as the controllers, the manual, and the box. Or are you saying that the lowercase s was something they used before the official release?

Perhaps not necessarily 4chan. Perhaps the bulk of the disproportionately high occurrence of unaltered "Playstation" anywhere is somehow due to the spellings being primarily based on those people's memories of it having been that way.

I know it’s uppercase, but it was always lowercase in my head when I had to spell it out. No idea why.
