This is just revisionism in light of Doom 2016s popularity. Doom 64 and Playstation Doom were overlooked for many years by most of the community until the new shiny multiplat came out. And yeah they sure as hell should have impooved lighting and level design over Doom II considering Doom II is just a glorified standalone expansion for Doom. If anything Doom 64 falls short of expectations for an actual sequel its more of an expansion/remix itself and doesn't add enough new elements that take advantage of the hardware and the monster sprites are hit and miss (and the doomguy sprite is just straight garbage).

More or less, but the new enemy types are fantastic additions, and Doom 64 suffers from lacking some of the best ones.

I do agree with you that it’s become the contrarians choice. But Aubrey Hodges ambient music is fucking amazing. The sprite work and texture variety is ass. Everything is low resolution and muddy. Weapon balance is weird. The level design is kind of butt. But it’s still quite fine. At least Doom 3 had good level variety, unique graphics and shading, and solid multiplayer. Doom 1 was amazing when it came out, even on a low end PC. everyone talked about it at school.
Doom 2 wasnt talked about as much, since everyone was talking about consoles at the time, but still an amazing game. Theres so many mods for it now that its still great and fresh in 2020.
Doom 64 is super ambient, and an overall great doom game. Doom64ex is great if you want to play it on pc too.

I like GE more. It's so much more run and gun than PD and the kill count seems to be much higher. PD has way more focus on stealth/objectives. It's fine if that's your thing but I prefer GE.

PD has way better guns though. Graphics, too. GE I feel has the more memorable music because apart from PD's first level I barely remember any of its tunes. I think for setting they're kinda tied, can't really choose. GE has that awesome Soviet Bond feel of course and nails the movie's vibe, while PD has a really great sci-fi feel to it.

Fair enough rationale, but I find I much prefer an analog stick for moving over WASD buttons, to the point that I'm now (when possible) playing FPS on PC with an analog stick controller in my left hand instead of using my keyboard.
