it can get a bit preachy with the dialogue, but I enjoyed the story a lot and the characters.
the difficulty can be frustrating, and the combat system is quite complex, tons of status effect impairments, tons of things can go wrong if you don't plan properly; so it depends if you want something hardcore or something straightforward...it's one of my favorite jrpgs.

Are you sure you're talking about growlanser IV wayfarer of time? The story is cheese and cliche to the max with awful pacing, the combat system is pretty basic and very easily broken, the biggest problem is that it fails to challenge the player. I don't even remember what status effects there are. Just buff up -> attack and everything will die.
Despite that, I like how it tried to make each fight slightly different due to the stage you fight on and the victory/defeat condiitons.

Of the ones pictured, I've only finished 2 of them. Langrisser Tribute is a collection of 1-5 on the Saturn. I've only really played 5 and not-pictured Warsong for the Genesis which does not have the Urushihara art. I actually enjoy strip mahjong games and those were alright, not the best of the genre, but the Urushihara designs more than make up for it. I didn't consider myself a collector, I just happen to have kept what I bought back then, and at that time Urushihara designs were those games' selling points.

It can be done in many ways, some good and some bad.

Poke around for a few hours at rule34.xxx and you'll find at least a few ordinary porn artists who can rival or even beat anybody exhibited in this thread. Old-time anime-style character designs tend to be warped and gross for the most part; it took time for artists to figure out that it was at least an option to draw nice-looking characters instead of dopey generic ones. Most still wouldn't take that option of course, but at least it's there now.

For me one thing is being a good artist, in the sense of that if you mean for your characters to have big eyes covering half their face, you are consistent and respect perspective and your own established proportions. A bad artist makes a head facing 3/4 while both eyes look the same and don't adapt to perspective, like the upper middle girl in pic related.
And art-style is that choice not only of character aspects like how you portray the body and proportions, but broadet art categories such as materials and coloring techniques (like in >>6208676 which changes the placements of many shadows, and instead of giving shiny objects their sheen with a white shade, they use an airbrush)

Then, a good artist is able to make different designs or referents able to fit in his style without falling into sameface, see how all the girls in >>6205275 not only have distinct head shapes, but ones that fit into what they represent, like the rightmost one looking more mature.
