Nothing because arcades in my country mostly sucked. I did have that one After Burner machine that was cool as fuck at a place near my home.

Out arcade had a sole Fatal Fury Special cabinet. There was always this creepy guy in trenchcoat with awful east european accent standing in corner near it smoking blue Gauloises that would instantly challenge anyone who seemed interested in it. He was good with Andy and he always paid for game.
Yeah I probably miss all those oddballs that turned out to be cool guys once you played with them.

cabinet side art that was amazing and looked NOTHING like gameplay.

cabinets that had ash trays built into them.

That crazy sound of 40 coin ops blaring noises all at the same time.

The ever present sound of the coin changer -swiiishhhh- as coins or tokens fell into the cup.

Are there ANY arcades in New York City?

I know of a few barcades, but no arcades...

>> No.620504

Back then I'd be wowed seeing the arcades at where I live have game variety. It had classic Capcom stuff (most notably SF2), some MKs, VF, motherfucking Gauntlet, Sprint Racer, hell Simpsons arcade was there too. I was hype as fuck for those Sega racers which had those moving seats when you turned. Oh and Virtual On. I met a long time friend through that game, as well as (while not retro) Soul Calibur 2. I even met a grill there who was pretty good in DDR, and we've been close ever since

Too bad they took away all the cool cabinets though. They also put this huge-ass karaoke machine where wannabe rap artists would rap over popular/common love songs, which somehow kills the sounds of every arcade machine that's already blaring out. Slowly the arcade started to house common street scum and they even had fistfights and shit inside. Shit sucks.

That one racing game. The one with the cards that saved your progress.

I was young, but I won a single race and people over my shoulder were like "ohhhh"

Speaking of which, Battle Gear series on full simulation mode was hard as fuck. I do like that they actually got 3 pedals and a H-Shifter on.

When I lived in Japan going to arcades was one of my favourites things to do when I didn't have anything else to do that day. It's not all peachy because people are usually allowed to smoke inside and I hate that, but nothing's perfect.

I just loved how people acted in the arcade. People were chill, relaxed, and yet fiercely competitive at the same time. I remember spending time watching people try to beat hi-scores on old arcade machines like ghosts and Goblins and a bunch of others I had never even seen before. And the variety. The variety was the best part. My favourite arcade had all the best games ever released in the last 30 years. It was truly a beautiful sight to behold.

Some arcades disallow smoking, but it's not legally mandated by law. Most arcades allow smoking at least on some floors because a lot of people who are willing to put down hundreds of dollars a year to play SF2 are also chain smokers.

Japan does things right when it comes to videogames my friend. I miss a lot about Japan but the videogames... its to a degree you just don't get in North America.

You know, I only really have a vague memory of the arcade in the town I grew up in. Small town, so it was really more of a pool hall that had some machines off in one corner. Still remember the last time I went; it was the last sunday before it closed. I was the only one there, except for my dad and the guy who owned the place. The owner turned everything on to freeplay, so I played the shit out of SF2: Champion Edition, and my dad had a few beers and put a new highscore on the pinball machine. I think I was all of eight years old at the time. Good day.

>tfw there has never been a real arcade anywhere near you
Sure, there was always the small arcades when we went to watch movies and such, but never a real arcade
I recently found out that there was an arcade place that had opened up in a nearby mall. It stayed open for a good two months before it moved out. I found out on one of the last few weeks, and nearly everything was already taken down by the time I got there. The same thing happened with a comic book shop, only I was there on its first week of opening, and its last week of opening.

A few buddies of mine are planning a trip to the Chinatown in Los Angeles in a few weeks. Anyone know if there are any good arcades out there I should look into?

What's the matter with barcades? I've never been to one, but but I usually drink when I'm playing vidya, so it seems like a natural fit to me.
