The year is 2000. PC Gamer decides to produce a sister magazine called ONLINEArena as an experiment to see if a magazine dedicated to curating community maps and discussing level editing/design tricks can kick off.

To my knowledge it never went beyond one issue, and I can't find my fucking second disc for it which included all the DOOM/Duke3d maps I was after since of them were awesome to my recollection. My guess is they realized how futile it was to make a magazine that required you to own games to play the contents of the disc, and that folks who were probably interested in the mag already had working dial-up to search the game's Geocities/Angelfire/Tripod/PHPBB-Forum communities.

If I can find the second disc I'll upload them both to the internet archive since we all know how hard it can be to find certain old maps on long-defunct websites. Hell, I can't even find existence of this magazine on Google.

I've got 4 monster closets to the western side of the room, and another set planned to the south across the slime. There's two switches marked that you need to flip to advance, one on the ledge and another in a bunker of a sort.

Which one should be opening which? Do you enjoy monsters suddenly materializing behind you? It was always annoying to me, but it's still being done.

There is literally nothing wrong with playing on NTR if you're new to FPS games and getting mandhandled, it's the same gameplay but with less enemies and more health. As long as you don't play on ITYTD (which halves the damage you take and doubles your ammo, removing all challenge) I won't judge you. Everyone was new at one point. Play at a difficulty where it's fun for you and get comfortable with the game/genre at your own pace.

Save ammo etc, look at your map sometimes since there are secrets in which the hint is some off color wall on the map or something. Secrets like that are commonly found after you grab a automap powerup. Episode 3 is where Sandy really wanted to step up the difficulty so theres cacos everywhere but you can chainsaw them easily. Dont try sawing Barons.

HMP is the default difficulty for the reason being its medium challenge. Doomers often choose Ultra Violence so ever monster is there. The game is so replayable you need not worry about beating inferno on HMP. Do know that Episode 4 on UV can be rather challenging for a first time play to say the least

One last thing about difficulty, I think it might only apply to Final Doom but some levels get so maliciously difficult it really doesn't matter on some maps whether you pick easy, medium, or hard. First of all, if you aren't already, play with a mouse. You can't look up or down in the original game, but you can use a mouse to turn horizontally with speed and precision.

Don't be afraid to use cover, if anything this is ideal for when fighting hitscanners, breaking their line of sight means they can't shoot at you, stick to a corner or pillar, pop in and out for shooting (timing it to the shotgun for instance) and avoiding being shot back, but make sure to fall back or move to other cover when monsters close in.
Don't rely on cover for all your engagements though, sooner or later you'll get to one where you have to stay mobile, either moving from cover to cover, or there just is no cover and you can't stop, avoid getting cornered.

Cacos don't have a sound file associate to it, but they do actually bite in melee, and they don't just bite real hard, they bite very fast, keep your distance from them like you're a ghost and Pac-Man just gobbled a power pellet.

Pinkies can be baited in melee, if you move away right in time as they bite down, they'll whiff, with some skillful moving you can dance with an entire swarm of them that way.
The chainsaw works reasonably well on pinkies as long as they don't surround you.

The Berserk pack doesn't just restore your health to 100hp, it lets you punch as hard as a rocket explosion, though the red tint wears off, you still have the super strength for the rest of the level.
For lone Pinkies, this is quite useful, and when you've got used to strafing, it can work on imps.

Infighting is not just really fun, it's really useful. When moving, align yourself so that there's a monster between you and another monster, maybe multiple, this can make them accidentally shoot each other and start infighting.
Monsters of the same species generally can't infight, normally, (an imp fireball won't hurt an imp), but guns ignore that rule, so zombies will gladly just blast away at each other, and they may often hit other monsters.

I gave it a quick runthrough. It's a decent first attempt. It felt a bit too easy, though. You had such large areas that were relatively sparsely-populated. It seems you tried to rectify that with the final battle, but that just seemed like a random mass of enemies and simple circle strafing around after killing the Archvile made everyone infight with one another. The blue key area was probably my favorite, and could have benefited from an ambush or something after grabbing the key. I liked how the player looped around it.
tl;dr: The map layout is fine, but you should work on your enemy placement.

The level is Boom-compatible, so it runs on prboom+, Doom Retro, and above. Those are two very popular sourceports that are highly used.

The level is either ugly to look at, or simply unattractive. I'll give an example of a bad texture scheme, first room: There's STARTAN, a tech-themed texture in all walls, and that is an infamous texture in itself. In the middle there's a large circle textured with marble, and the ceiling is filled with the ugliest wood texture there is in Doom, that's three different themes not put well together with each other.

The combat was easy, but I wouldn't say boooring. It could be better, but I guess you held back

The layout is weird, the arenas seem stitched together, and overall it doesn't have any notable architecture.

The best part was the Blue Key room

But overall, this is alright for a beginner's first level. Keep it up, anon. The tip I always give is to watch and learn what your favorite maps do well, from architecture, to texture work, to enemy placement.

I agree with what the other anons said. The room placement is kind of awkwardly stitched together, and the enemy count is pretty sparse so you can just run past a lot of them with little trouble. I was able to pacifist run the level with no trouble I mean I had trouble because I'm really shitty at the game and made a ton of mistakes including running through an early area for health and coming out with less health than I went in after playing it once and knowing where the secrets are. I agree with the other anon that the blue key room was the highlight of the map; from a pacifist perspective the way the enemies gradually came in filling the room as you hit switches made it pretty tense (not that you should be designing your levels around pacifist obviously, it's good in general to have areas you're going to spend time in open up keeping things fresh), and it's just a nice aesthetic touch to have the key in plain sight as soon as you enter and then you have to figure out how to reach it. The final area would have benefitted from some of that; as the other anon said having everyone in the center makes it easy to circle around, while if you made some come from the sides it would make a harder battle. You're given enough plasma ammo to lay waste to everything there easily so having them just in a big pile infighting makes them sitting ducks.
One thing I should comment on are the secrets; you should try doing a bit more to clue players into them. Some of them you did and that's good, like the two green torches in the starting room or the changed wall texture in the red key room, but some are only noticeable by automap, and while automap secrets ARE good, I think there were too many in this case. All in all good first attempt, everyone has to start somewhere and you made a perfectly playable level which is better than others.

DOOM has an almost excessive amount of high-quality mapping tools. I actually don't know what the best one is due to lapsing in that sort of thing; I learned basic mapping using Doom Builder 2, and at one point I was told to upgrade to GZDoom Builder (which is a fork of DB2 with extra features), though maybe something else supplanted that.
Making maps in DOOM's engine is much, much, much easier than in any full 3D FPS game; the entire map, from a mapping perspective, is two-dimensional, with different sectors of the map being given properties like height to make what ends up being a 3D environment when loaded in-game (or, with modern mapping tools, you can preview what it looks like and even edit in the 3D space by using a special view feature. I don't really know what the best tutorial is because it's been so long, but the OP still has the tutorials I used and I doubt they've been obsoleted (if they have been I'm sure some anon will correct me).

I've been working for a week on my first map now and I feel like if I don't show it to someone I'll just quit it altogether.

It's very much work in progress, textures are all messed up, some of the rooms near the start and the end are very plain, there's barely any lighting and monster and item placement are just there to give you an idea of how it's supposed to play. I expect feedback mostly on the general progression of the level.

The white cacos are pure evil. They lunge like lots souls while firing fireballs like a mancubus. If one gets close you automatically die. Sometimes when you try to chainstun them with a chaingun or a plasma rifle their AI bugs out and they shoot a shitload of unavoidable fireballs all at once. When fighting multiple cacos at once I honestly feel I only won due to some RNG rather than skill. If two or three lunge at the same time there isn't anything you can do.

Looks uncomfortable as fuck, but you could make a shotgun that looks just like that and it'll be fine. Shotgun shells operate on pretty low pressures compared to rifle cartridges, which is why you don't need particularly big and chunky locking lugs for automatic or manual actions, and why even the cheapest Brazillian single shot made out of potmetal is hard to break. You genuinely can make a shotgun barrel out of aluminum, and it'll hold up.
I'm thinking a steel breechface and lockup, aluminum barrels, then encase the barrels and action in an outer plastic housing like that (which likely doesn't serve much of a purpose), and there you go.
