I think that's overall one of the most boring series there is and that one was like torture for the bit I played.

I have finished all of them except for 2 and 6 so far because 2 and 6 were incredibly boring.
The rest I have really liked and this is has been fantastic so far mostly thanks to the story.

I was okay with 1-3 on gbc mostly because I had lots of time to play due to commuting. I got 7 when it came out and found it unplayable. 4, 5 and 6 I tried on emulator and then later in the DS ports several times and hated them. 4 particularly felt like torture.

9 was kinda fun ironically.

That's what you get for playing one of the dullest franchises in the history of JRPG franchises. Seriously each game following the Hero and his companions as they fight assorted dinosaurs has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the outdated gameplay and soulless anime aesthetics, Dragon Quest's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Horii vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing JRPG fans. Dragon Quest might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Final Fantasy series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.

>a-at least the writing was good though

"No!"

The writing is dreadful; the translation is terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time I engaged in dialogue with an NPC the game presented me with a random infodump instead of anything resembling actual human conversation.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time this was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Horii's mind is so governed by obsession with pointless slice of life dialogue that he has no other style of writing.

Later I read a lavish, loving review of Dragon Quest by the same Akira Toriyama. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Dragon Quest games at 10 or 11, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Ball Super." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Dragon Quest" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Akira Toriyama.

The arena has turned out to be an endurance fight of 6 battles in a row ending with a boss fight.
This section has really damaged my enjoyment of the game.

Again it wouldn't be so bad if this hadn't just been a solid brick of combat and mazes for the last few hours it feels like a different game.

You really have to be in an episodic mindset when playing DQ7. It does have some of the best storylines of the franchise (as well as some of the worst).

Sorry you decided to post on /vr/, OP. To answer your question, yeah this segment is pretty ass. Once you get through it the game goes back to how it was before. That having been said, you've probably only made it about 20% into the game, so you still have a long way to go.

But I was playing the 3DS remake. I just found it hard to care about any of the mini-episode style plot lines except maybe one or two of them.

Maybe I would have had more patience for it if I hadn't just come off of 6. That one really tried my patience with the switching between different worlds.

I don't remember a time where /vr/ wasn't full of "DQ is generic" mouthbreathers, even back before 11 had even come out in japan. I always need to remind myself not to come back to this board because i'll inevitably make the mistake of trying to argue with one of them.

It's one of the worst games in the series, just skip it. VIII, IX and XI are significantly better. VII has about 50 hours of "content" which could be stripped out to make it good but it's not worth suffering through just to see the better bits sprinkled in.

I love Dragon Quest. I wish more RPGs had that sentimental sense of adventure that feels like reading The Hobbit. I loved Final Fantasy 1 for that reason too.

Even back then there wasn't much in the JRPG genre
MegaTen was completely different, Final Fantasy always contained science-fantasy, Pokemon didn't come along until after DQ had already done Pokemon, etc.
In fact, I'd be more willing to call FF generic, because quite a few JRPGs add science to the mix, like Chrono Trigger. You don't see many like DQ that just do fantasy and chosen ones.

The translation in the 3DS version was bad. All modern DQ translations are bad. Some people love the accents they add, but I don't. The characters just sound like ESLs that are struggling to communicate, and that has a tendency to ruin dramatic moments in the story and make it more tedious to read the dialogue. When they started using Russian letters that I didn't know the pronunciation of, I got annoyed. When they started speaking more French/Spanish than English per line, I turned the game off.

>> No.6209114

Sounds to me like you're just uneducated. A vast majority of the non-English language they use is extremely common phrases that most people who don't speak that language should know due to how widespread they are.

The pacing in this game is fucking horrible, even in the 3DS version.

>NPC tells you to go do a dungeon to continue the story
>finish dungeon
>NPC tells you he forgot to ask you to get something from the last room, forcing you to go all the way through and back to him again

Shit likes this happens multiple times, it's really obvious padding to make the game longer.

Shit is annoying. I am early into DQVIII and I have to get the boat operational. Problem with this is that I had to go out to the boat, then diverge to a castle library, then now comb places I've been to to find a new harp to make a wish. This isn't even mentioning that I couldn't get to Brains until I was forced to lose the horse and coach and go all the way out to the lady theif, then do a dungeon just to get my shit back and continually progress. It just seems like the games have you go in a straight line and then make you take a hard 90 degree turn until you are allowed to keep progressing. It is just irritating. This is all about getting side tracked rather than going after your objective. Trying to get into the Abby was good but some of this shit is just fat that should be trimmed.
