Why did Westerners consistently fail to catch up to Japan when it came to knowledge and skill in retro gaming?

Alex Valle for example got trounced by Daigo in Alpha 3 when he came to America.

Because the Japanese choose one single thing to be good at and devote their hours to it outside of school or work. Unlike Westerners who are busy also watching movies, playing other vidya, reading, and listening to music.

>> No.6199252

Plus in terms of /vr/ games you could rent a ton of games in the USA but rentals were not a thing in Japan, so Japanese kids had to buy one game and commit to it for months/years instead of just a weekend like US kids and then move onto a new one.

>> No.6199264

Close knit arcade scenes always make for superior players. In the modern Tekken competitive scene Koreans are getting displaced by terrifyingly good players from Pakistan of all places because while Korean arcades are disappearing, Pakistani players have a robust locals scene and arcades running.

1. Alpha 3 was not a retro game when that match-up occurred.
2. "Retro Game" is a broad category that includes both western and eastern games. I guarantee the best FPS players in the west would slaughter the best of Japan in the 90s.
3. The Japanese were better at some fighting games due to having more arcades and more players to create stronger competition.

This.

Most westerners have so much ADD they cant focus on one thing for 5 minutes before jumping to something else. Look at the box collectors on this forum. They play a new game they spent $250 on for like 5 minutes, if that, before entombing it on their shelves.

Also, in the shmup scene, some japs know some glitches that they keep very secret. Which is kinda bullshit and borderline cheating.

Westerners mostly grew up on console games, which generally weren't designed for serious competitive play.
It's why any time you see a westerner excel at a game it's usually from speedrunning a Nintendo game or something similar.

renting isn't a big thing in the rest of the world. Never was a thing here. Over here, you had "arcades" that had a bunch of consoles, and you "rented" those by paying money per hour to sit there and play from the games they had.

It wasn't "game publishers" it was Nintendo. Just Nintendo. And they did it in spite of companies like SEGA liking the rental market as it often lead to more sales.

Nothing to do with ADHD, it's completely different mentalities on every level. Japan lacks the free thought most western societies used to express. They expect to be put in a box, work that box and everyone else do the same. They're cogs in a larger machine and identify as "Machine 4 : Cog 293,049". Where as the West identifies are Cog 203,028 and that's it. Japan was conquered and forced into a more Western style of society, which doesn't change a damn thing for how they look at the world. It's like comparing a cheetah and a lion and asking why both cats don't act the same. Very different creatures in very different environments.

>Close knit arcade scenes always make for superior players.
This is the only answer that is needed. Online play with GGPO leveled the playing field greatly later on due to it allowing many westerners to play with one another and get better the same way as the Japanese players were prior.

>> No.6208271

The reason arcades are such a contributing factor is that knowledge gets shared. Americans aren't big on doing this even in places with a scene. They're quicker to huddle into their cliques, make assumptions of newcomers, test them for their "worth," and even then, they won't compromise any key information or anything that might throw their win into jeopardy. Improving doesn't matter as much as winning. "America, #1," for better or for worse (spoiler: it's worse).

>> No.6208363

>>6208358
Bro, there is no secret knowledge in the fighting game scene. It all comes down to whether or not you have a healthy scene that gives you the opportunity to improve against good players. America is fuckhuge and before good online play took off, it was near impossible to find a good scene if you didn't live in specific areas of the country. In Japan, the best players are a public train ride away.

>> No.6208367

>>6208363
This same goes for places like China,Korea etc combine that with the fact that japs can barely speak English these days let alone in the past

Noo zoomies you couldn't just googletranslate in 2002 and roam whatever Japanese sites to get the potential info
noo zoomies you couldn't use nicovideo in 2002 for replays/guides

>> No.6208376

>>6208363
>there is no secret knowledge
What are you talking about. It's called "tech," people discover it as a game gets played, good communities share it and improve the community as a whole. See, this is the other thing. Americans are so hung up on fighting games as a dick measure contest you can't even SAY something about them without some nobody coming in like they'll set the record straight. Conversations become a back-and-forth where nothing gets shared because there's a constant one-upsmanship by a fragile ego that needs his joystick-twirling to elevate himself above his peers. That about sums it up: Americans are shit at fighting games because there is an inherent social aspect in being able to get good at them and the "guard" for them in America is full of anti-social toughguys whose "toughness" is beating people up in cyberland.

>> No.6208382

There is zero secret knowledge in the fighting game scene. Once someone figures out something, they do it in a match and everyone sees it. The end. Fuck with your pseud bullshit.

Lol maybe in the realm of fighting games and fighting games only. We don't seem to have a hard time in the west finding people who can play Paganini or learn quantum physics, or any other number of skills and tasks that are a lot harder than videogames. And even in videogames westerners do just fine in genres more popular and fitting our consumer culture like fps titles. The explanation is entirely economic and material, i.e. arcades and concentrated urban centers that can foster arcade scenes. Everyone doing amateur sociology in this thread is pulling it straight from their ass.

A large part of this is the black guys in the FGC. For some reason they always want to make it into a dick measuring contest and act like it's some gang warfare shit. It's influenced the entire scene and puts off a lot of people who other wise would of been interested. Guys who aren't into gang culture, rap or trying to be a thug while twiddling your thumbs avoid it like the plague. Those are also some of the smartest, most autistic people around and would be a god send in improving tech and learning niche strategies.

The Japanese scene doesn't have that same wannabe rapper element so it's a lot less about pissing contests and a lot more about improving as a community rather than an individual. Completely different mentality.

Yeah, Nintendo lobbied Japanese lawmakers very aggressively and got them to ban video game rentals outright. They also pushed VERY hard to have game rentals banned in the US as well. They failed, in part thanks to the combined efforts of Sega and Blockbuster video.

As a final fuck you, Nintendo successfully prevented Blockbuster from including instruction manuals with their rental copies of games, arguing that it was copyright infringement. Blockbuster ended up providing generic copies of manuals instead. Nintendo of America didn't lighten up until around the N64 era.

Like others have said I think it comes down to culture. I'm not sure if I'm correct about Japan but in America Arcades were always treated as these seedy child-bars by parents while in Japan arcades were much more accessible. I kind of wish we had the Jap culture here in america but it's just too spread out for it to be feasible.

Utter bullshit. If you're poor you don't have the money to feed cash into fighting games. They're one of the most expensive arcade games and especially these days you see them with consoles, online subscriptions and arcade sticks, so being poor has fuck all to do with it.

>>6212142
Of course there are, but there culture isn't wannabe gangsters and wiggers acting like tough guys over street fighter. It's a shitty way to behave in general and it's even shittier because it's over fighting games. It's why in a competitive field I was much more drawn to something like Quake which didn't have the same chimp out bullshit every time someone won or lost and then a week of social media slap fights over it. No other competitive scene is like this, most are much more professional in public and know they need to shower before attending events. No one ever used to complain about the smell of LAN parties or competitive FPS events in Europe, yet we hear constant complains about the FGC smelling so bad it lingers after they leave.

Maybe my culture is different but if I had spare cash I didn't put it into arcade machines, I saved it to buy second hand games which I could get for the same cost as playing street fighter maybe 10 times. Birthdays and savings let me get the consoles and then I used what little money I had to buy games. Arcades came to town a few times a year and I might have a go at Tekken or MK once or twice but I never fed quarters into it.
