I am 99% sure my grandma had that exact TV when I was little. I need to go through our photo albums because I know I have a picture of it, somewhere.

I absolutely don't have the room for a floor model, but if I were to get one, I'd probably shoot for full-nostalgia and try and get the hefty RCA my parents had when I was a wee tot. I remember one night my dad hooked our NES up to it, and seeing my games on such a massive screen was mind-blowing compared to the 19" we usually used.

I like using Kijiji because it lets me get shit/get rid of shit without the eBay hassle. But I agree that this kind of shit pisses me off. The train station one does not bother me as much, since I live within a 5 minute walk of a subway. The "hey can you deliver this shit to me in hell's half acre" nonsense is ridiculous though. A couple years ago my grandfather died, and we had a ton of Apple IIs and vintage Macs that he had been keeping in our garage. I decided to keep the best ones and then give away the rest for free. I had an exchange with someone that went much like this:

>"Hey will you deliver to me way out at the edge of the city?"
>I don't really want to do that, you can come pick it up where I live
>"Please consider it I live in a suburban shithole and don't have a car sob story etc."
>Okay fine I can deliver for $60
>"Wait why is this suddenly $60? It was listed as free"
>Yeah it's free, but only if you come pick it up. If I have to drive to where you are, that is a 1 hour, and 52km round-trip. I charge 54 cents per km, plus $23 an hour for my time (what I was making at the time). I think both of these are reasonable figures.
>"FUCK YOU FUCKING GOUGER I DON'T HAVE MONEY AND YOU'RE TRYING TO GOUGE ME"

An hour later, I pick up my cell and get some angry pre-pubescent voice screaming at me. I don't understand where these people come from, or why they're interested in computers that are almost twice as old as they are.

Considering the value of the larger professional studio monitors these days I expect someone will start buying up arcade machines with late generation 25" and 29" standard resolution and tri-sync monitors in them. Especially the ones that don't have significant burn-in. Then all a person has to do is construct a wooden cabinet and run wires to a control panel and power switch. Then re-sell it on ebay or craiglist. The boxed RGB monitor would probably be worth more these days than the working arcade game.

If you wanted to get fancy with it you could even do up the box to look like a floor model television and add in the requisite speakers, composite video decoders, etc. I don't think the lack of being aperture grille would be a big deal since any of those Pentranic, Betson, Wei-ya, etc that were made in the late 2000s would still look really great. And some of the older arcade monitors have a really coarse dot pitch and shadow mask that some users prefer.

I have been thinking in getting myself a CRT. Are the Philips models any good? Found one with a component port and that looks pretty good.

>> No.6200330

>>6200291
I've bever been a huge fan of Philips, but I'll tell you what I tell everyone; at this point in time, the quality of a CRT has much more to do with the condition of that specific tube than it does the brand. A top-of-the-line JVC or Trinitron that had the shit beat out of them isn't going to be as nice as an RCA or Zenith that was barely used. Best thing to do is test them in person and make the call yourself. Never buy a CRT without testing, and never have one shipped. Optimally, never pay anything more than $20-30 bucks; you are literally taking someone's garbage off of their hands that they would have to pay to dispose of otherwise.

There. There's the only consumer CRT buyer's guide anyone ever needs.

I suspected arcing but I'm frankly terrified of electricity. Stood several foot back when blowing air type of paranoid.
I thought the wire might have been a potential cause since it blows around but didn't want to touch it without discharging which I've never actually done either.
Is there a preferred wire gauge/single or multi strand wire?
I've also heard some people say to be careful of tube gathering charge while disconnected, but then see people ground the anode to the frame? Any way to actually protect against it?

Just picked this up from the e-waste pile an hour ago. On paper it seems pretty good, 0.21mm dot pitch, maxes out at 1920x1440, and will do 1600x1200 at 86 Hz. Interestingly, it also has BNC inputs, so I am wondering if it will accept signals from consoles. It also has the smoothest swivel mechanism I've ever seen on a monitor. I've never owned a Philips tube so I'm kind of curious to see how it will perform.

This was just one of many. Of course, it was just my luck that the one day there are a shitload of CRTs in the e-waste was the one day there was a city employee who gave a fuck about doing his job. I left behind a Samsung SyncMaster 1100P and a smaller Philips 109B5, both with BNC inputs. Tons of other VGA-only SyncMasters as well. Debating if it's worth raising the ire of the city to go back and get those.

CRT back when the first LCD consumer sets launched were already more to produce and ship. Removing shipping barely helps keep cost comparative. LCD was cheaper from the start of the consumer run in 2003 (anything previous was not consumer/rpoduction) and by 2006 it was better than plasma.

Shipping a CRT cost tons. There are also a shit ton of more heavy/stability based bits that need to be overbuilt to keep retarded customers safe. Triple front glass panels alone mean an LCD/plasma with ONE glass/plastic front would be 1/3 or 1/5th the price in that regard alone.

Most IBM monitors were garbage, but a few were very good. I'm thinking of the P260 and C220p.

G97s and P77s are alright if you can get them for free. The old InfoWindow units are good if you want the late-80s DOS feel going, but good luck finding one that doesn't have stupid levels of burn-in. I have a G97 and it's... reasonable. Will not do 1600x1200 flicker-free, which is sort of my litmus test for whether a PC CRT is "good". But it's beige, it's got that IBM aesthetic, it'll push SXGA @ 85Hz, and it's been with my family for decades now. I would not pay for one, and I doubt I'd repair it if/when it breaks, but it's a reasonable tube to have. However, we also had some low-end 15"-17" IBMs that came with our various Aptiva systems, and honestly they weren't worth the space they took up. Trash.

I don't know if that is necessarily reflective of how much they have gone up vs "yes, they have gone up". One thing is for sure though, it's gotten a hell of a lot harder to find PC CRTs over the past decade. It used to be that every nignog and his dog had one to give away. Most normies don't even bother with the "giving away" part anymore, they just toss them now. Alternatively, anyone slightly in the know lists them as "RARE- RETRO CRT PC MONITOR for GAMING" and charges an absurd price. So unless you're willing to be really patient and go dumpster diving on a near-daily basis, you're likely going to pay out the ass for anything decent. But $650 for a mid-range 19" Trini with no BNC inputs is stupid no matter how you slice it. Congrats to you for managing to get that price, makes me want to consider listing some of the professional monitors I've picked up over the years.

He basically told you your tube is worthless and not worth fixing. You could probably take apart the front panel CAREFULLY, and try to clear some of the gunk out of the buttons (or if you can find a compatible switch, get one of those off eBay and re-solder).

In short, your monitor was trash when it was new. It did not have any fancy serial or USB connections that allowed for software tuning, unlike a high-end ViewSonic, Nokia, Sony or Mitsubishi monitor (the the various Apple, Gateway, HP and Dell rebrands of those). So short of fucking with your graphics card's output, there is no way to adjust it in software.

So after letting it sit for 48 hours or so, I powered on the Philips. Whoever was using this had the brightness cranked up to 100%. Tube is a bit dim but the colours are nice. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to want to do 1600x1200 at 85 Hz, and I suspect this is because of the cheap Chinese VGA cable I’m using (which came bundled with some LCD monitor). Will probably have to get a better VGA cable at some point. Anything I should watch for?

I ended up going back to get the SyncMaster 1100P. Turns out it was a plus model, so should be able to do 1600x1200 at 90 Hz. It’s sitting in my office now but that will be interesting to look at.

I remembered my HP P1110 actually has a detachable VGA cable. Used the thick HP cable on the Philips, still 75 Hz 1600x1200. Pushing it to 85 Hz just results in a black screen. So all the cable did was give slightly better colour and sharpness. I know for a fact this cable will drive the HP to 1600x1200 at 85 Hz and 1800x1440 at 80 Hz on the same computer hardware. I tried another machine and got the same result. I can’t figure out why the Philips is performing below spec. Aside from some kind of hardware issue, the only thing I can think of it that this is an older, undocumented version of the 201B (date of mfg, January 1997).

Has anyone experienced something like this on their PC CRTs?

According to CNET the 201B should be able to handle 1600x1200 at 85 Hz but if it can't resolve it then it could be a wrong spec. The user manual must be up somewhere, it'd have the most accurate spec list. Otherwise you can do 1600x1200 at 75 which isn't awful, but 1024x768 at 100 Hz or 120 would be a buttery smooth alternative

I actually do have the user manual from Philips, which says that this thing should be capable of 1600x1200 @ 86 Hz and a maximum resolution of 1920x1440. But I suspect that's from a later model, because the 201B has a bulbous early 2000s aesthetic that's a lot more like the HP (pic related). I actually cannot find any evidence of the "boxy" 201B having been sold in North America. If the revisions were so substantial that they basically resulted in a completely new monitor, I don't know why Philips didn't just call it the 202B or something.

I really want to like this tube and make a case for keeping it. But I also have a pair of NEC Accusync 900s that will do 1600x1200 @75 Hz all day long, and will run up to 188 Hz at 640x480. Sure, the NECs aren't really "professional" units, and the build quality is crap compared to the Philips, but on paper they're just as good. I don't know, I may end up giving away the 201B to someone who wants it.

>whats the best PC CRT?

Oh, man, so many. My vote would be for >>6208086, specifically the 2040u. I saw one of those in operation once, and it was incredible. It's the sort of thing you need to see in person. But there are literally dozens others. The problem is that people with those high-end Sony, Mitsubishi, Lacie or Eizo monitors generally know what they got, and they will try to gouge. Some good under-the-radar models might be things like the P/G Viewsonics, larger NEC MultiSyncs, Dell/HP rebrands of Sony monitors (like my P1110), Hitachi CMs, the Apple Studio CRTs (rebrands of Sony/Mitsu, though you need a Power Mac G4 to adjust the geometry etc). People seem to look for anything that will do 1600x1200 at 80 Hz or higher. All that being said, there are some "basic" CRTs that do a great job. I'm quite partial to my old Viewsonic E70. Only does 1280x1024 @ 66Hz, but has really nice colour and deep blacks. Despite being made of Tic Tac plastic, my Accusyncs have good tubes. Basic isn't always bad.

Yeah, I didn't play the remaster, but from what I saw it seemed like a total rush-job that they were trying to pretend wasn't a rush-job. You don’t need to ground it, just be sure you discharge the tube as you would discharge a capacitor. 8-bit guy has a few videos on how to do this. Don’t listen to retards who say you need to have the tube plugged in while you’re discharging it, there is no need to “ground” it that way

I have a 14M4U which I actually got for free about 6 years ago. I didn't even know I had stumbled across something particularly special until the PVM craze started around mid-late 2017. My impressions are that it is a really nice CRT set, but not worth $250+. Especially considering it's almost 20-year-old hardware (and mine is a more recent unit manufactured in May of 2001). High-end consumer Trinitron (ie, XBR) and JVC D-series sets, honestly, look ALMOST as good and can easily be found for free, like here >>6211837.

We're talking the cheapest, shittiest consumer TVs and flickerfest monitors, many of which come from off-brands. I would shit myself if I found a 20" PVM for sale here. The best I've ever done on the CRT front was a 17" Sony E200, which I bought brand new from a liquidation auction in 2011 for $15. Everything since then has just been disappointments. I'm referring to the fact that when stuff is ripped from dvd's into any format, it gets deinterlaced, so 90's/early 00s tv that uses 60i gets turned into 30fps progressive scan. I tested this theory out by using the PS3 netflix to play Trailer Park Boys on the CRT and it's an encode, so it doesn't actually feel like it's video from a camcorder anymore.

The solution to this if you're pirating is to find untouched dvd's, and while I'm aware that you can search for stuff and add "iso" "dvd5" etc, there was never any practical reason for most people to upload or download what would be 10's of gb's for a season of TV when most people are just going to watch it on their laptop or w/e and could get an encode that's a fraction of the size. I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled in the thrift stores probably, DVD's are peak worthless these days so people probably toss decent stuff all the time

This might come off as incredibly dense, but for the life of me I can't remember. I have a PVM-20L2MD, and I'm trying to output my Wii to it. I vaguely remember playing Pikmin a while ago on this TV, and it was by a physical disc. I only started recently hooking up my NA GameCube to my PVM via S-Video and then I have another European GameCube connected via SCART (so that's out of the question). Maybe I hooked up my GameCube a while ago and played it on there, but that doesn't sound likely because I don't remember playing with nauseating interlacing, so I assume I played on my Wii. However, I am getting absolutely no sync when hooking my component cables up to it and have tried changing my OPT RBG SYSTEM setting in the menu to COMP/INT and COMP/EXT. Maybe I'm connecting stuff wrong? Maybe it's in the wrong place? I dunno.

Wegas are flat tube trinitrons, like the one pictured in that post. Almost all of them, especially bigger ones, have issues with geometry ie wavy scrolling, bowing, etc to some extent.

These flaws are most noticable with simple static 2D graphics. You don't notice it nearly as much with more complex 3D imagery or video. So, depending on your intended usage, a Wega will be more suited to some people than others, who might look into a curved set instead.

They've always been like that. In 2002 the target audience for them would have been people looking for something to play DVDs and GTAIII on, and they do those things pretty well. Get a laptop. They have worldwide power supplies, 31kHz VGA output, and of course a built-in monitor. The better models even have an onboard YM2608 and composite NTSC TV out so you can wire that right up to any regular TV.

Can someone explain to me how a monitor could be causing a power surge through its VGA cable

The monitor doesn't work when plugged into certain devices because of it

>> No.6226712

An internal short somewhere in the cable. If it's detachable use a different cable. Otherwise cut one end off another VGA cable, open the monitor up, and solder it on where it goes.

Because the insulation might still be a little intact. If you've ever messed with a broken audio or composite video cable you'd know. If it's not in the perfect position you get no signal.

>> No.6226721

>>6226718
No it depends on the device. Works on a laptop or out of a computer's integrated graphics but not in an HDMI converter that it used to work in. Also causes a USB power surge when plugged into the computer that it didn't before.

I had a VGA cable that had one of the data pin grounded (some are like that apparently). With a scanline generator, plug got VERY hot and laptop VGA couldn't work.

Yeeted the shitter and used another cable without that grounding, problem was solved.

Can someone help me pick the best monitor out of these:
Philips 109b4

Samsung Syncmaster 995b

Get the Philips. The Sony monitors are from their economy line and max out at a pathetic 1280x1024. The Samsung goes up to 1600x1200 but the Philips beats it by also doing 1920x1440. Of course this is assuming they all work, but go from there.

I'm having issues with my Sony E100 14" (1999). Set it to 85 Hz, still getting noticable headaches within three minutes of use. Also hear a loud high pitched whining sound when I booted up Age of Empires 2 on steam.

What gives? Could it be the HDMI to VGA adapter I'm using? I have an old thinkpad with native VGA support, might test it with that..

It's just weird, I used CRT computer monitors all the time growing up until about 2010 when I graduated high school, and I never remember getting headaches are loud noises from my monitors, although I've heard these things aren't exactly uncommon...

Hope I didn't wasn't money on this thing, at least it looks cool and is definitely nostalgic, I just don't think I can use it as a work monitor like I planned with it causing headaches and noises.

Is it worth it? Someone in my area is selling one of these, but pretty much refuses to go below the $100 mark because Sun and "it was $5,000 new in 1998". Generally speaking, I want any 21" CRT I come across. The problem is paying for it. Reading old forum posts from the mid 2000s, like pic related, makes me sad about the current state of CRT prices. Since I was 14 at the time, with no money, no car, no apartment and a mother who was hell-bent on getting rid of all our CRT monitors (I barely convinced her to save the monitor for my dad's Amiga, and only because it was small) there was no way I could take advantage of the great liquidation.

No, the 13W3 is hard-wired, but it should have a VGA port. You can use a standard VGA cable. There is a button on the front that you can use to toggle between the 13W3 and VGA inputs.

Got any pics? The 5410 looks like a lovely monitor. 100Hz+ refresh is nothing to scoff at.

As more leave the market due to wear and tear or clueless people trashing them prices will only go up. Enjoy what's left while you still can, in a decade or two we're probably going to see micro LED monitors capable of point-by-point scanning which is physically identical to how CRT images are drawn. At that point any remaining CRTs will likely be trashed.

Considering that the last decade ended with high latency 1366x768 TN panels dominating consumer LCDs, much like they did in 2010, I don’t have a lot of hope for the future.

>>6228732
If it warms up in less than a minute that means the tube and internals are in really good shape. I have a Sony Multiscan G500 from the same era, and while it outperforms that Sun on paper, the damn thing takes half an hour to fully warm up and has a different geometry issue every time. At this point, beggars can’t be choosers. It’s better to have a mediocre new tube over a tube that was amazing when new but now has all kinds of issues. I would pick a brand new SyncMaster with over a worn-to-shit Trinitron. But if you find a Trinitron that’s basically new, then that’s even better.

I want a pi anyway and I don't really want to spend the money to get the original equipment and carts but if its going to be a terrible experience I'd look for a CRT monitor for my computer instead, hard as hell to get here though
