What are the best /vr/ DragonQuest games? I have never played any of them but am interested in trying them out. Also, what am I in for?

V is supposedly the best but I love 1 because of its simple plot and gameplay. Very chill for most of the game.

>> No.6197024

They all suck. Immensely.

>> No.6197064

1 has a lot of mandatory grinding. If you for some reason want to play it, emulate the GBC version for the boosted exp gain and use fast forward.

>> No.6197073

Only play them once you know Japanese. The translations ripped the soul out of them and took a huge dump instead.

I love 1 and 3. 5 is supposed to be pretty good.
As for what you are in for... Fairly straightforward RPG's with great soundtracks. Nothing too complicated plot wise, with turn based combat, and well laid out dungeons.

Honestly, pick one and play it. If you like it, chances are that you will like the rest.

One word of caution: the first 3 were made in the 80's, and as such they aren't fucking around, and neither will they hold your hand.

Shitty outdated games if you play the NES titles. A buggy and unfinished translation if you play Dragon Quest VI and don't know Japanese, and an admittedly underwhelming game either way by those who have played it.

Best open world: DQ3.
Best story: DQ5.
Generally amazing: DQ8.
Most peculiar: DQ1.
Worst but still good: DQ2.
Longest and weirdest: DQ7 (100+ hours of episodic shit).
Literally the worst in the series: DQ9 (tiny singleplayer, randomly generated dungeons, crafting, grinding recipes, you name it).
DQ10 is the MMO.
DQ11 is extremely handholdy and offensively easy, but the story is actually freaking great.

3: SNES. The GBC remake is also fine. Phone ports are the SNES version.
4: probably the original NES. The DS remake is pathetically easy in a bad way, trivializing the story. Demon lord? Down on first try. Also, the translation is really borked and additional content was cut anyway.
5: the stellar PS2 remake with a patch. Orchestral music and shit. (Avoid the DS remake like the plague.)
6: the DS remake is passable, but the SNES original just looks and sounds better in every way (it's very-very late SNES, you know how impressive that was). Unfortunately, the SNES version probably doesn't have a proper translation to this day.

>> No.6197905

Boosted exp is fine. In the end it doesn't make the game easier, it just reduces the time grinding. It's fine not to waste time.

Unlike other games, grinding in DQ is an important part of the experience. Nobody managed to copy this properly, which is why people hate grinding. In DQ it worked, and taking it away just because in Final Fantasy it didn't misses the whole fucking point.

>wasting time and slow progression good, not having tedium bad

Even DQ itself fixed this. Back then people had more free time and besides, the Yuji Hori thought of "effort in a game and blah blah" just doesn't translate to a fun experience. The difference between your reward in the NES game and the SNES game is ten hours of repeating the same thing ad nauseam.

The series peaked with III and IV. Both offer the DQ experience, but III is an open game where you can go explore the whole world with a party you can customize yourself.
IV is plot-based, is separated into chapters, was the pioneer jrpg to do that.
Everything else is retakes on the formulas already stablished, with more modern graphics, different plots. They're all good to different degrees, and if you like first 4 DQ games, you'll probably like the rest.
I do recommend starting with the first DQ, then play 2, even if they're both very basic, they're short (for RPG standards). III is the real masterpiece, but the whole experience is even better if you're familiar with the first 2 games, there's a nice surprise at the end section of the game that you will only understand if you played DQ1.

Can back this up. Though I would raise DQ1's qualities (solving puzzles based on NPC clues and having a strong gambling aspect to the solo combat) and lower DQ8's (whose main quality is seeing Toriyama's artstyle finally come fully to life).

This isn't exclusive to the first game, and is in fact a major component of what makes DQ DQ. The entire Hero moveset in Smash was designed with this in mind.

Not really. It’s a series heavily reliant on nostalgia.
If you haven’t played it before, odds are you’ll find the experience rather underwhelming and vanilla. Which is honestly the best way to describe DQ.

1 is oddly comfy. The lonesomeness and somber overworld theme should make it gloomy but there's something appealing about just going on a grand solo adventure at your own pace.

I just started this series this year actually.

DQI is very barebones, it's not bad but it's just very small. The map is like 100x100 pixels or something. 5 towns, 4 dungeons and not much else to do but grind and try and find your way. You could complete it in like 4-6 hours if you worked out where everything is. It's a shame the GCCX episode isn't translated, I'd love to see Arino tackle it.

DQII is quite good actually, suffers from a "where the fuck do i go" problem once you get the boat, but I'd say if you paid attention and noted things down you'd get through it without too much issue. It's fun but very very grindy. I had to get everyone to around level 30 before I was safe attempting the final dungeon and that took hours. Combat is painfully slow times and I really hate getting a group of 5 different enemies that just destroy you if they attack first. Great little JRPG otherwise, playing it back in 87 or whenever it came out must've been a treat. The map is like triple the size TOO.

DQIII was really good. I loved a lot about it and I also loved exploring the world once you got the boat. Encounters are still the bane of my existence and I hope to fucking god you can tone them down in later entries, I tried to not use a guide throughout but got stuck with what to do with the change staff, really wish I noted things down when I played since I felt like an idiot after I looked it up. The job system can be a little bit overwhelming if you wanna mixmax everyone but you don't need to do it, I beat the final boss with the same jobs as I started with since I didn't want to bother with it. A decent story as well for what it is. Honestly, a very solid JRPG.

Currently on DQIV and I fucking hate the translation job they've done on everyone, it's actually putting me off the game. Why the fuck has no one translated the PS1 version? I also dislike emulating the DS, but I'm assuming everything important is on the bottom screen with the map on top?

Which version of DQ 2 did you play? I was still getting raped in Rhone at lvl 30 playing the NES version. Or can you just keep running through and hope you don't die until you beat Malroth? I may have just wasted my time grinding for no reason

The SFC version, although my levels were skewed so when I say I had to get everyone to Level 30 it meant that the levels were like 40, 36, 30 since the level cap and exp levels are all different, so getting the princess to level 30 would be the same xp as getting the hero to level 40.

>> No.6203534

Ah, that makes sense. You should play the NES/FC version if you want to tack on a couple more hours of grinding and losing your mind. Do attacks still get skipped over if the enemy is already defeated in the SFC version?

>> No.6203687

>>6196978
They're bad in that they require you to grind. Like you HAVE to grind 5 levels just to survive the next dungeon. Dungeons require multiple trips. Accumulating gold and resources is an objective you have to actively pursue. It's never enough.

It's not like Final Fantasy where you'll end up with an inventory full of 99 potions without even trying.
Or Wizardry, where you can easily got from lv1 -30 in a seating, because characters are throw-a-ways that can perma-die
