Was the localized version really that much worse?

Honestly, dumb western pop culture aside, WD added a lot of pizzazz and character into things without compromising on the core game's characters and story, so that's to be at least given credit. It's just their misplaced humor and 90's memes that really burn some asses now in that topic. My problem is more their arbitrary changes to game balance, which caused all sorts of difficulty issues out the ass. Like less EXP and gold earned, less enemy HP but they do more damage, bosses getting scaled way harder and other problems. The second game's CD version was even worse about this kind of shit, though the remake version was tame compared to all other releases.

Translation wise it depends how much you can stand Vic Ireland's sense of humor. Difficulty wise it's just fine and the saving thing isn't a problem unless you're an idiot.

The remake is kinda dogshit compared to the original though, so there's that.

This is what I disagree with. I think the sega cd version has perfect balance. If you explore each area you should be just powerful enough to beat the boss and there's no point where you have to grind. Not many rpgs hit that sweet spot and whatever Vic did, it actually worked.

Also the new Star Dragon Tower music was surprisingly good.

No, it's pretty great actually. There's a couple places where they go too far, but generally I like the localization and enjoy the jokes they added. As far as the changes to balance go, it works pretty well in the Lunar games. I liked the increased enemy stats. The only gameplay change that tends to piss people off is having to use Magic EXP to save in the Sega CD version of Eternal Blue. I haven't played the Sega CD version, but I hear it's not actually that big of an issue.

i never really got into the lunar games because none were released in germany, but with PS classic i want to try again. which psx title is a good entry point? is grinding as easy as just hitting stuff or is it complex with skill or magic usage necessary? can I enjoy it in 2020 without guides? thanks for opinions!

>> No.6196070

I've seen some JP review sites praise the english localization and how much it improves the game.
There's a reason why Lunar is not as popular in japan as it is in west.

Say, if I wanted to get into this series then which versions is better to play? SCD? PSX? NDS?
Preferably on home console.

honestly most people will say it's easier and more reasonable to get into Silver Star Story Complete on the PS1, as it's a remake of the first game and pop culturally the best selling and most remembered version of the game. the original Sega CD version is great in its own right, but very much a Sega Genesis game with CD benefits on top, along with having a radically different tone and design despite the same core plot. it's very much worth a look for comparison's sake while having enough different to not feel like the remake was a total retread. Eternal Blue is more complicated, many hardcore fans will swear up and down that the Sega CD version is mostly superior, while the PS1 version's tweaks and alterations are both not great and also less notable than Silver Star's. For some reason EB's remake also references the SCD versions of events and locations, so that's even weirder, but hey.

Lunar Legends is a curiosity at best, a mangled mix of the SCD and PS1 versions of Silver Star, and the PSP remake is serviceable but loses a lot of the charm if we're speaking nostalgia. Do not bother at all with Dragon Song, it's a terrible game handled by a different team entirely where running hurts you, you can't choose targets to attack, you have to choose between item rewards or EXP, and the plot is boring and retreading anyway.

I understood that SCD had originals, and PSX had remakes.
So, in final what you say: originals or remakes?
I think, I will only play one version.

Go with the remakes. As someone who owned and played Lunar 1 on release on SCD and the same with the remake, the remake is just plain better in every way. Better graphics, better sound, better translation, better overall plot due to the changes the original dev's made, etc.

So just play Silver Star Story Complete. It's the best version of 1.

Lunar 2's Sega CD version has stuff that's missing from the PSX remake. I'd go with that.

>tfw there will never be a Lunar 3 and the franchise is dead

It hurts.

>>6194153
If you grew up with the localization in the '90s, it was fine. If you're some zoomer fuck you'll be REEing at the translation.

>>6194153
Pretty much this. Bosses have visual tells that can be countered appropriately, for example Borgan's Gravity Bomb can be mitigated with Lemina's Magic Shield. It's only a problem if you're an idiot who doesn't know how to use White Dragon Protect at the right time

>> No.6196371

No. SSSC is the best version no matter what Segay fanboys tell you. They literally improved EVERYTHING.

Well I was 20 when the WD version came out and I found the pop culture references a huge sticking point. But other than that I generally liked the game and think the difficulty curve on it is about perfect.

are there any cheat codes to fix the bullshit mechanics in dragon song? i wish there was a patch that balances the game better.
its mind baffling how anyone in the development team thought the game was okay before releasing it. its fucking retarded that we cant run without losing hp.
