I keep my 20" CRT on top of one of the Ikea trolleys. Fits on perfectly, but being a BVM it doesn't have speakers and there's no room on the sides.

Any idea what speakers I should get for this setup? Most I can seem to find are really expensive bookshelf speakers, el cheapo Logitech PC ones, or those teeny bluetooth party speakers that probably have crappy and omnidirectional sound output.

Being out of production worldwide for nearly fifteen years will do that, although I'm sure DF didn't help.
Of course if you're just looking for any trashy CRT you can still find them being given out, and if you're in the UK where RGB was standard that's fine, but not quite in burgerland if you're looking for a good one where they're quickly becoming known as a hot item for retro game collectors.

Unless a new type of display is made that can display old consoles and shows just as well as the old tv's they were made for, there is no going back down in price.

That's kind of ridiculous considering Unicomp but purists are purists. I would not hesitate to buy a new CRT from some Trinitron spinoff company if they were still available but I guess that purists would still exist that would hoard their Trinitrons and refuse to accept the reality the spinoff is not that different.

>>6173276
There's nothing on the horizon for exactly what CRT had but I think it's hard to argue against stuff like microLED on the horizon which is what a supercharged SED would've been but even middle of the road technology like OLED that is out right now with older used models still haven't breached below the $500 mark, and only a few models were below the $1k mark.

Keyboards are not CRTs.
There's a slew of specialised manufacturing equipment and hazardous chemicals (on top of skilled labour and expensive raw materials) involved in the production of CRTs. There's also a finite amount of demand for them, given it's a teensy market of dweebs that'd want them, and then only want another when their first breaks.

There is no way it'll ever be economically viable to produce CRTs again.

This is funny, because I bought my Model M new in the box off Kijiji for $40 in 2011. My Masters prof picked up a dozen or so in the 1990s when people were throwing them out en masse for "quiet click" keyboards. Now the damn things are at least $100. If I had to replace mine for any reason, I would definitely get a Unicomp- no reason to be paying that kind of money for a used, crusty, worn-out keyboard.

Based on my experience, the same shit happened to CRTs. In 2009, I got my Viewsonic P815 off Craigslist when someone posted it as "if you can carry, it's free". It came in the original box with all the manuals and software. Still have it and it works great. In early 2011, one of the labs in my university was throwing out an HP A7217A (rebranded Sony GDM-FW900). I checked the eBay prices and they were around $200 at the time, I figured I scored a minor win. After I built my 2500k desktop, that became my main monitor for the next several years. In 2013, I came across a yard sale where an older couple who were retiring from their video production business were selling off some PVMs. I got a PVM-8044Q (one of the tiny 8" ones) for $20, because that is all I could fit in my room at the time, but they had a couple of larger ones too. They weren't too expensive, only $40-$60. I didn't really know what they were, and I still kick myself for not grabbing one while I could.

Recently, something blew up in my HP. Replacement is out of the question. The damn things are now a thousand bucks or more. Looking at similar replacements on eBay is a joke, they're all $200+ for a basic Trinitron tube. Some guy locally was trying to sell a Sun GDM-5410 with severe burn-in for $100. I found a shop that's willing to repair CRTs, but it's a 5-hour round trip from where I live, and I would need to drop it off and pick it back up a few weeks later. Still, the repair would cost way less than replacing it. That's how bad the CRT monitor situation is.

There's a lot of deliberate sound design, depth, and stereo separation even going as far back as 4th gen systems. 5th gen stuff has plenty of CD-quality audio, and some Playstation games even have "wide stereo" modes you can enable. Don't drive studio monitors using a series of frankenstein adapters and the RCA outs on a retro console, dude. Just don't bother. That's the audio equivalent of running your PVM from RF.

Just get some regular ass Creative or whatever 2.1 speakers. Studio monitors do not fit your use case unless you somehow have your console modded for high-fidelity audio and you're running it through a high grade receiver/amplifier, and even then I wouldn't recommend it.

Studio monitors are not designed to sound "nice", they're designed to sound accurate, and are very fatiguing. I have a pair hooked up to my PC for audio mixing, and I have them turned off in favour of my headphones most of the time. They're not pleasant for general use, because they are accurate enough to betray how badly mixed most audio is.

I wonder what the ask-bid spread is on those, though. Like people can be asking that kind of money all day long, but it doesn't mean there are a lot of people willing to pay for it. And if you are in business, then you're an idiot if you let a CRT screen sit in inventory for 2 years taking up valuable floor space that could be used on higher turnover products, just because you wanted to get $1000 instead of $500.

But yes, I know the ridiculousness of the situation. As I said, I went to replace my FW-900 HP rebrand and was greeted with $1k+ prices. If you don't factor in the cost of my time (10 hours total), it's cheaper for my to pay gas for ~950km (~590 miles) of total driving AND pay someone $150+ to repair the damn thing. Also on the hipster front, apparently it's now "cool" to have burn-in. What the fuck is up with that?

>>6175246
Sure, consumer Trinitrons are still pretty good as long as they have S-video. For most people, it's not worth it to pay the outrageous hipster taxes on a PVM/BVM

>>6175751
These things actually used to be really affordable because nobody wanted them. I picked up my 8" PVM for $20 in 2013 and the 13"/14" ones were being sold at the same yard sale for $60. eBay prices at the time were hovering around the same level, which is probably where these people got the idea to price theirs. I actually kind of got ripped off because businesses were literally throwing them out and people were picking them up for nothing. I got the idea off a one-time thread on /a/ of all places (I think it was in January or February, you could probably look it up in the archives). Some dude just had a really oddball looking CRT, and that day I discovered the Sony PVM. Only a small number of people seemed to know about them, and they never really shilled them. You guys've already talked about it a little bit but I just got a broadcast CRT and I'm wondering what sort of audio setup would complement it (PVM has only mono output, I think, which is not great).
I looked into speakers since apparently DJ monitors are a bad choice but if the speakers seem pricey the stereo amplifiers they require are in another world (the """budget""" recommended option was some cambridge audio thing worth like 1500 AUD). I've only used PC speakers my whole life and I wouldn't mind investing in a stepup if there's a world of detail I've been missing, but that's just obscene. I have an opportunity to get a 9" Sony PVM-9L2 for 40 Canadabux ($30 freedomdollars) The picture is good apparently, based on some of the photos I've seen. The only issue seems to be that the external casing has some cosmetic damage, so I don't know if this has been dropped at some point. I'm fine with the size since I'm looking to put it into a fairly small space, and I already have a 19" NEC Accusync 900 PC monitor.

Should I go for it? Seems like a decent deal considering eBay prices are 3 times as much.

How would you go about making a portable handheld gaming device using a real CRT?

My idea would be to mod a portable CRT television into a new case with the controls on the top and bottom of the device, and you would hold it sort of like a sandwich using the tips of your fingers to press buttons on the top, and your thumb resting either on a d-pad on the bottom or perhaps a neo-geo pocket style microswitch thumbstick. Or maybe the CRT could be removed from the case and inserted into a new case with the buttons on the face on either side of the CRT so the orientation feels natural and you can use both thumbs, but then grips on either side allow you to hold the device like a pair of binoculars.

I think it can be made to look good and perform well with a little of thinking about it. And it's probably best to be sort of conservative with considering what kind of games can really be played on such a device with a tiny CRT. Cropped 8-bit games to compensate for the lower resolution of this type of CRT (I don't think they can resolve 240 lines) and emulated handheld games might work well.

Just because something is NOS does not mean that the caps can't fail after years in storage. Generally, good caps shouldn't do that, but it can happen. I had some caps on the logic board of a NOS Macintosh IIsi go bad. But Taiwanese and Chinese capacitors made from about 1998-2007 were generally much worse, and it's not uncommon for equipment from this era to fail (it was called "the capacitor crisis"). People began to figure this out pretty early, because as early as 2002, I remember motherboard manufacturers advertising "Japanese Capacitors" for this exact reason.

Of course, this all presupposes that the problem is with caps. It could also be solder joints. I've even seen corrupted drivers doing similar things.

Yeah it really seems to have started dying down around 2007. I think that is around the time the Chinese manufacturers figured out that they couldn't continue with their half-assed industrial espionage, and they finally got around to fixing the electrolyte formula. By the time I put together another new PC in 2011, nobody was advertising the origin of their caps anymore. It was pretty shit while it lasted. I remember my friend's parents bought him a new Dimension 8400 for his bar mitzvah, and it spectacularly failed just outside the warranty period when some leaking electrolyte caused a short circuit followed by a small fire. Dell always used the cheapest garbage in their consumer systems at the time.

Moreoever, this episode highlighted the West's naïveté with regards to China. It was clear that there had been industrial espionage of sorts, and nobody batted an eye.

Growing up I always used to see Sanyo as sort of an "also-ran" in the consumer electronics space. Their TVs were almost always tucked away as the budget models, and may have mostly been used to lure people into the store to upgrade them to a Sony, JVC or Panasonic. A friend of mine had a Sanyo that was around 25" or 28", I remember it being a lot dimmer than my parents' Panasonic (which was also a shadow mask) and it had shittier colours. Unlike other Japanese manufacturers, they never really moved beyond making radios.

All that being said, it almost sounds like your issue might be caused by a resistor. In the original cables, Nintendo put a 38 ohm resistor to avoid having the image get overly bright. If you bought a chink cable then it may not include this resistor, which could explain the sudden brightening and dimming. Your TV may be mediocre but I doubt that it is the problem.

I have a pretty heavy 32 inch CRT. It's a very rare variant from the early 90s that RCA produced with incredible simulated surround sound.

It's got 3 composite inputs and an S-video input which is why I bought it. The S-Video looks fantastic on SNES and N64 games.

It's also got another unique feature in that it can power external speakers.

Those prototypes never got released and those rumors are false because SEDs got wrapped up in a lawsuit against stupid licensing and patents with Applied Nanotech. I pulled a Sony CPD-G500 from the e-waste bin about two years ago, and it still works flawlessly. That was a great find. Since then, I've also found a Nokia 445Xpro and a Viewsonic P95f+ (both of which are also nice but not quite as good as the Sony. The Viewsonic is also really beat up). People will occasionally through out good CRT's just because they look at it and think "oh, it's one of those old crusty computer monitors, we should get rid of it"

>>6189536
>>6189614
Pretty much this. Although CRTs were also getting smaller. I remember my school had a couple ViewSonics (I believe they were GS790s) with short neck designs. Despite being pretty big, they took up relatively little space. You could easily put them on a desk and have a keyboard in front. Generally speaking though, the public just liked LCDs because they were smaller and sexier, and looked more futuristic. It didn't matter if the product was total crap, because not many people were using their CRTs for things that would show the CRT advantage. When I was building my first gaming PC around 2005, my uncle gave me his old 17" CRT (which I believe was a Dell M770) when he upgraded to a new Dell computer with an LCD panel. I think his "cool new monitor" had something like a 25ms response time and the absolute worst viewing angles I've ever seen on a desktop screen. There were so many mid 2000s flat panels that were just total garbage, but people liked them because they didn't take up desk space.

>>6191630

A few reasons, but mainly it's because of the low sales volume compared to RCA or other consumer standards.
Depending on your use case, your alternative options are:
-RCA to BNC adapters
-Make and terminate your own cables (definitely more expensive up-front because you need to buy the terminator tool, but if you were doing it for, say, 7-10 consoles, you'd probably end up saving money)

It’s a KV-27FS13 which AFAIK isn’t HD. I have it plugged into component. I set it to 480p forced in the unleashed video settings. It looked sharper than 480i so I left it. It is really sharp and clear to the point where I adjusted the Xbox scaler sharpness down to give a little bleed. I’m not a PVMeme master like you but it works just fine for me and gives a way better picture than my Wii or GC with official component cables.

Kinda new but just want to ask. What parts of a CRT are feasibly replaced if something breaks? I know the tube can't be replaced, unless there is some guru out there that can do that, but anything else that I should be aware of?

Capacitors dry out after 20-30 years, while some hang on and on. Those need changing at some point for some TVs, while others can have speaker repair I suppose. You could technically reflow the main board, but I doubt anyone would want to go through the trouble unless it was extremely rare.

Mid size ink-jet AMOLED mass production has also been realized November 2019. It won't be long until the first high refreshrate AMOLED 27-32 inch monitors release.
FED and MircoLEDs are still years away from mass production and both technologies need to solve multiple problems. The recent CNT CPU and other CNT research breakthroughs have revived FED research. CNT-FEDs/NEDs are far superior to the Spindt-FEDs. They can be transparent, flexible, non-volatile (like e-ink displays) and they don't require a vacum.
Personally, I believe that CNT-FEDs are going to be the display technology that is going to replace OLEDs. The garantuan potential of CNT technology in multiple industries including tech, defense, bio-tech and defense will lead to large private and public investments into the field. CNT-FEDs are just going to be a byproduct of the CNT research.

>there is a good chance they would've tested audio with yamaha ns-10 speakers, and sony mdrV6 headphones
I had to look up the NS-10s to see if they were something I should own. This is why I hate audio stuff. From the wiki it seems they were industry standard because "they are so bad that if the mix sounds good on this, it should sound good on most other setups." That's some stoner reasoning that. Visuals have reference standards for color spaces and gamma, audio has "does it sound good on this arbitrary shitty studio speaker."

240p and 480i contain the same number of lines. The 480i spec requires the blanking interval to be offset by a half field to cause the scan beam to alternate between the odd and even fields. 240p is considered a "hack" in that by not doing this half field each odd and even field occupies the same position on the tube; however reading the spec suggests that 480i was more of a hack since it hides this busted scanline in the overscan area rather than defining behavior.

I don't use a PVM either, I use a KV-27FV310. I can tell you right now that regardless of what you have your xbox set to it's outputting 480i. Are you even using component cables? If not then it wouldn't be able to send 480p anyways. That TV also only does 480i so if it were sending 480p you'd know cause the TV wouldn't display it properly.

Maybe it is 480i then, but yes I’m using component cables which was one of the first sentences in my response to you. Either way it looks a lot better than the Wii or GameCube do over component. I don’t think it matters that much if it does just look better and is a more functional single box otherwise

Just as an update it appears your right. The Xbox was outputting one 480i because the stock MS dash wasn’t forced to 480p. 480p flat out doesn’t work of course. I will attest to the Video quality being much better on the Xbox versus The Wii. It could be because I have a wired ground directly from my video out to reduce interference. But mostly I think the OG Xbox just has better video output for one reason or another. I have both hooked up to component, the Wii was outputting 240p. But games are just not as sharp on the Wii. I’ll dig out another set of component cables and give those a shot

all but the last revision of the OG xbox have terrible 480i output, worse than a wii. only the xcalibur encoder does it well. so it's worthless for emulating on an SDTV.

This is just completely false. The video out of the original Xbox is really excellent quality and improving it even further with a ground wire is completely trivial to do.

>First the input is converted from RGB to the YCrCb color space, and the color components Cr and Cb are subsampled to half in the horizontal direction, producing a 4:2:2 signal. From there it is scaled to either 720x480 or 720x576 pixels regardless of the original resolution, with flicker filtering applied in the scaling process itself. The color components are scaled to a 4:2:2 output, so even after scaling they're half the horizontal resolution of luma. There goes a lot of sharpness already.
>And it gets worse. When using RGB SCART, the sync is taken from the composite signal, so the Xbox produces a composite signal alongside RGB. To stay within the bandwidth restrictions required for composite video, the color components must be heavily low-pass filtered, resulting in < 1.5 MHz bandwidth at -3dB. The problem with the Conexant and Focus Enhancements encoders is that they cannot tap the signal before this filtering occurs. As a result, the RGB output is lowered to composite bandwidth.
>>>>>DVD Video playback bypasses the scaling and flicker filter, but the color bandwidth is still reduced.

I can assure you the xcalibur looks no better than the the other chips. The output is identical either on my Panasonic’s or trinitron. I’ve swapped consoles around a lot to make sure and trialed a Wii and Wii U. The HDMI our from the Wii U is far superior to all, but once you switch into Wii mode that’s out the window. The original Xbox ended up winning out because of this. 720p on my plasma set looks really clear.
